Two-Factor Authentication: Your Best Defence Against Losing Access

A lot of conversations in this group understandably focus on getting an Instagram account back.
But today we're looking at something equally important:
How can you make it harder for someone else to take control of your account in the first place?
One of the strongest steps is turning on two-factor authentication (2FA).
A password alone can be compromised through phishing, data breaches, reused passwords or simply being tricked into entering it somewhere you shouldn't.
With 2FA enabled, Instagram requires an additional verification method when it detects a login that needs confirming.
🔐 Our preference? An authentication app.
Instagram supports several 2FA methods, and where available you may see options such as an authentication app, SMS or WhatsApp.
An authentication app has an important advantage: the security code isn't dependent on an SMS reaching your phone number.
Whichever method you use, there are a few things worth doing:
✅ Keep your recovery email address and phone number current.
✅ Save your Instagram backup codes somewhere secure.
✅ Never give a 2FA or backup code to another person.
✅ Be suspicious of messages claiming you must provide a code to "verify" or recover your account.
✅ If you're changing phones, make sure your authentication method is transferred before losing access to the old device.
🚨 Remember: your verification code is for YOU
Someone claiming to be from Instagram, Meta Support, a recovery company or a helpful "expert" does not need you to send them your authentication code so they can recover your account.
Those codes can instead give someone the final piece they need to get into it.
And if you're currently dealing with a disabled account rather than a hacked one, don't assume that handing somebody your login or security codes will somehow give them access to a special recovery route.
No legitimate third party can guarantee that Meta will restore your account.
