We learn a lot about how we view ourselves and the fears we have associated with going grey and getting older when we decide to embrace the grey .  Ditching the hair dye is a big decision for women. The pressures from society are real, and depending on where you live in the world it can also vary greatly. Why Ditching the Dye will help you tap into your Rebel Energy! Growing out your natural gray hair can boost confidence by embracing your authentic look, but it can be challenging too. The process is quite long and many women find themselves always finding a reason as to why this isn’t quite the right time to ditch the hair dye. You can plan all you want, but the timing is never going to be perfect so you have to choose whether or not you are going to go through with it and just do it. I now look back fondly at my transition photos and think how proud I am of her for all that she’s learned. That she went to that event like that! She defined her beauty and owned it. Authentic Self-Expression Growing out your natural grey hair is a natural and authentic expression of who you truly are. Embracing your natural beauty, including the silver strands, allows you to present yourself to the world without any pretense, fostering a sense of confidence rooted in genuine self-acceptance. Choosing to let your natural grey hair shine challenges conventional beauty norms, demonstrating a bold self-assurance that refuses to conform to external pressures and standards.  This was the main factor in my decision. I want women to feel freedom through my transition and to normalize grey hair at all ages. I have seen so many women on Instagram embracing their grey hair in their 20s and 30s .  Let’s break the stigmas and normalize aging and silver hair so it no longer has to be a part of the conversation for women. 4. By allowing your hair to grow out naturally, you celebrate the individuality of your journey and appearance. I thought my hair was going to grow in SO white. My temples are very light but I have a darker upper strip and a lot of dark and salt and pepper hair. I also have larger silver highlighted streaks . It’s fascinating to see all the women with their unique patterning styles. 5. 10 Advantages and Benefits of Ditching the Hair Dye and letting your natural hair shine! Why I stopped coloring mine at 48 and embraced my gray hair. I chose to step ‘ outside of the box ’ and ditch the hair dye for many reasons but the main two for me would be the constant stress and frustration of the new root growth showing within weeks of coloring. That and the time. The stress and the time.  Isn’t it ironic to see those two words together? Why would we give our time to stress? We color our hair to feel good about it, and we do, for a few weeks. Then we are worried about the new growth showing again.   Many of us can even be found chopping the top off of our heads in selfies to hide the greys. I know I did! Then you are paying for yet another trip to the salon or buying a new box of dye.  I started to recognize and feel the weight of this cycle, and I decided life had enough things demanding my time, attention, and money. We know life has no problem finding ways to add stress. I wasn’t willing to pay any currency to do this to myself any longer, so I broke the cycle. 11 Months Grombre Now here we are, 11 months into my natural silver hair grow-out journey. It’s been full of doubts and uncertainties, wonders and curiosities. It’s had me questioning my views on aging and learning about positive language and the differences between an anti- and a pro-aging perspective. I am now in the fondly referred to as 'grombre' or 'gray ombre' stage of my growout. The upper quarter or half of my hair is natural, and the lower half is the previously dyed colour.  Some people struggle watching themselves and their hair through the process, but I have quite enjoyed it. I have decided to embrace and celebrate it. I couldn’t be happier that I stuck with it and didn't give in to dye my hair even through the harder days and trust me there are many. 10 Advantages and Benefits of Ditching the Dye and Letting Your Natural Hair Shine! 1. Many girls and young women feel pressured into coloring their hair from a young age, often told their hair is flat or mousy. So much of our time, money, and energy is spent in this area of our lives. Love Watching Your Hair Grow I am learning to love and accept my hair as it grows in now. My hair has surprised me and not at all grown in as I had hoped for or even anticipated. It's so interesting to go from dreading the silver and white hairs to quickly wishing you had even more of them! It's a journey of letting go and trusting the process. I love growing and changing along with my hair, and I am so happy that my hair is so long, so I have plenty of time to enjoy this transformation. I feel passionate about normalizing grey hair in society for women of all ages. For that to happen, people need to see women with grey hair of all ages. Tucked away on the west coast, roughly 2 hours northwest of the Ngurah Rai International Airport, it sits nestled between verdant rice paddies and the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean. You'll find it just north of the small village of Sangguling, at the mouth of the Balian River. This secluded location guarantees a more peaceful and intimate experience compared to the bustling south of Bali. Balian Beach is known as a surfer's paradise, where volcanic ash paints the sand black in places, and powerful waves serenade sun-kissed shores. Imagine hand-in-hand strolls along the secluded coast, watching surfers dance with the ocean before sharing intimate moments under starlit skies. That is what you get here in a spot that seems so quiet at night and tranquil during the day, but where you will always find a cool bar or throng of people in a restaurant. Petra tou Romiou (Aphrodite's Rock), Paphos, Cyprus Steeped in legend and bathed in Mediterranean sunshine, Aphrodite's Rock in Cyprus promises a love story come to life. Picture yourselves hand-in-hand, strolling along the dramatic coastline where, according to myth, the goddess of love herself emerged from the sea foam. Take a dip in the crystal-clear waters believed to grant eternal love, or explore the hidden grotto said to be where Aphrodite met her lover, Adonis. This gem, off the northwest coast of Malaysia , promises romance amidst emerald jungles, where playful monkeys swing through the trees and hidden waterfalls cascade into turquoise pools. The spectacular Dream Forest in Langkawi, one of the island's newest and top attractions Explore a vibrant underwater world in crystal-clear waters, or sail around the majestic Kilim Karst Geopark, marvelling at dramatic limestone formations emerging from the sea. Hike through ancient rainforest light shows, search for hidden treasures like the Langkawi Sky Bridge, or soak in the sunset while riding the Langkawi Cable Car. All while enjoying panoramic views that will leave you breathless. We spent two weeks in Langkawi in several places across the island, including the incredible Red Coral Cottage, right on one of the epic beaches here, in the north of the island. We were blown away by how quiet it was, strolling on gorgeous white sand beaches without a soul in sight. This is a place of immense peace and tranquillity, where you can take boat tours among the mangroves that are far more personal and connected than the big tourist traps in neighbouring Thailand . Aside from just beaches, Langkawi offers plenty of public spaces, boardwalks, and parks too. Batumi, Republic of Adjara (in Georgia) Most people think of the U.S state of Georgia when we mention it. Georgia is very much a country of its own, and is in one of those spots that is so Eastern Europe it becomes Western Asia . A strategically important city on the Adjara coast, Batumi is easily accessible by plane, with direct flights from major European cities, or by train for a scenic journey through the Caucasus Mountains. Monument of Ilia Chavchavadze, known as the 'Father of the Nation' in Georgia When we talk about escaping the ordinary, Batumi is a city that does that in some very unique ways. European charm meets Eastern vibes on the cobbled streets, giving a flair to the city that can be as romantic as it can be adventurous. Against a backdrop of stunning mountains, the city has a coastline lined by impressive boardwalks, with monuments and gardens to accompany a fantastic beach, even if it is a pebble one. Some of the best sunsets we have ever seen, almost every day here in Batumi. The skies can be gorgeous here, with sunsets to die for. With the beach covered, heading inland is a real treat with quirky architecture like a skyscraper with a built-in Ferris Wheel and a tower straddled with the unique letters of the Georgian alphabet. Batumi also boasts a youthful energy, with bustling bars and clubs alongside peaceful public squares and spaces, offering something for every romantic whim. All accompanied by a great variety of restaurants, plenty of bars and wine spots (wine is said to have been invented here), and a rather unusually large number of casinos. Which, by the way, offer free buffet food, beverages, and even smokes to their guests. San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico San Cristóbal de las Casas, also known by its native Tzotzil name Jovel, is nestled in the Central Highlands region of the Mexican state of Chiapas in Mexico . It sits in a small valley surrounded by hills, offering stunning vistas and a cool mountain climate. This is a town that they say once you venture into, you will not want to leave. Honestly, this is just about as true as anything we ever learned on our travels. Picturesque views in this classic Mexican town of San Cristobal. Simply put, San Cris is where it is at! We spent 3 incredible months here enjoying all it had to offer. The main thoroughfare through the town is the heartbeat of the action, with gorgeous bars and bistros, restaurants and shops, and all the fresh produce you can shake your reusable grocery bag at. In a Spain-esque style, a sleepy and serene street roars into life in the evenings, with street vendors, performers, artists, and musicians springing to action every evening. Couple that with fireworks, epic sunsets, and dry lightning phenomenon, a quirky cool Airbnb , and that very special Mexican cuisine, and San Cristobal will certainly grab your attention. El Gouna, Hurghada, Egypt El Gouna, also known as the "Venice of the Red Sea," isn't your typical Egyptian experience. This resort town lies along the Red Sea coast in south-eastern Egypt , roughly 25 km north of Hurghada. Instead of sprawling, sandy beaches, El Gouna is a network of lagoons and canals, creating a unique "Little Venice" vibe. That being said, it still has epic beaches too! Imagine strolling hand-in-hand along charming walkways beside turquoise waters, exploring colorful marinas lined with incredible yachts, and enjoying romantic gondola rides under the Egyptian sun. Beyond its aquatic charm, El Gouna offers a diverse range of adventures; snorkel amid vibrant coral reefs, kite-surf on crystal-clear waters (which it is world-renowned for), or explore the nearby desert landscapes by ATV or in a hot air balloon. This secluded haven promises a romantic escape unlike any other in Egypt. El-Gouna is a walled city, which means that only residents, workers, and guests are allowed in. The security is quite welcome, making it feel super safe, even if you never actually see the 'walls'. There are spectacular restaurants here, all types of cuisine, along with a vibrant nightlife. Everything about it impressed us; it is modern yet old, traditional yet different, resort style yet it feels like a city. It kind of has to be seen to be believed, although there is one drawback, in that if you want to go to Luxor, you will need a nearly 20-hour day to do it. Gundogan, Bodrum, Türkiye Gundogan in Türkiye offers a blissful escape on the Aegean coast, approximately 17 km southwest of Bodrum. This hidden gem sits within the larger Milas district, surrounded by rolling hills, olive groves, and picturesque bays. Unlike its bustling neighbor, Bodrum, Gundogan exudes a tranquil atmosphere, making it ideal for couples seeking a peaceful and romantic getaway. Having come from a month in Istanbul , the slower pace of Gundogan was very welcome. We came here 2 months before the start of its actual 'season', which meant we were able to enjoy that very sleepy feel as the town sprang to life with businesses getting ready. Let us explain; this bay of this town is completely lined with resorts, bars, and restaurants, in between some villas. They ceremoniously shut down outside of peak season, laying out all of the reed rush parasols and furniture, clearing the decks, and leaving the foliage to grow. How cool is this palm tree! We walked past it every day on the Gundogan boardwalk.k As the season starts to draw near, every day something new starts to appear. Our Airbnb was about halfway up the hill around the bay, and it was awesome to take daily walks down it to the boardwalk for exercise and just because. With no one around, it was seriously beautiful! It amazed us really as the temperature was still in the low 20s, which is just about perfect! So, (we digress), as you walk past, it is great to watch the decks being polished, jetties being set up, bushes being cut back, and fresh menu stands making their way onto the path. April to the end of May is the golden spot here. Gundogan has all of the Turkish charm, calls to prayer, markets, and traditional restaurants you could want; it has resorts, water sports, sandy beaches, and adventure tours. Not to mention incredible and vibrant flowers that are beautifully grown in most of the gardens of the white-washed houses. Which, by the way, is a rule here in Gundogan! It may always lose out to Bodrum in the popularity stakes, but you know what, it is probably better that way. Arundel, West Sussex, England Located on the River Arun in West Sussex, England , lies the historic town of Arundel. This charming haven, about 80 km south of London, boasts a medieval castle towering over quaint cobbled streets lined with independent shops and traditional pubs. Imagine hand-in-hand strolls along the riverbank, breathing in the fresh air and soaking in the picturesque views of the castle reflected in the water. We could not get enough of this view at Arundel Castle. Arundel Castle, dating back to the 11th century, offers a glimpse into England's past. It also happens to boast one of the finest gardens you will likely find, in particular a spectacular rose garden that we will never forget. Beyond the castle walls, you will find the equally spectacular Arundel Cathedral, known for its Gothic architecture and giant circular stained-glass window. The location of Arundel is also pretty neat if you want to tie in other must-see spots, including Stonehenge and the Roman city of Bath. We did this loop on a weekend, and it makes for a really neat road trip. While Arundel may be well known in England, it is not a name that rolls off the tongue amongst foreigners. You think castle, you think of Windsor, right? Or the Tower of London? Whitby, North Yorkshire, England Whitby, set on the North Yorkshire coast where the River Esk meets the North Sea, offers a unique blend of romantic charm, historical intrigue, and natural beauty. This ancient seaside town, roughly 200 miles north of London, is steeped in history. Its East Cliff is dominated by the imposing ruins of Whitby Abbey, a 7th-century monastery famously linked to Bram Stoker's Dracula. Make no mistake, we have been to copious amounts of ruined sites around the world, and this is the ONE to see. The magnificent Whitby Abbey. Even in ruins, it is still imperious! Just the whole experience here is like a whimsical story. From the moment we stepped off the traditional steam train from Pickering, yes, steam train, the town of Whitby was everything we imagined England would have been like back in the day. As a fishing town, there are old nets and crates everywhere, fishing and sail boats in the harbour, old stores with the weather-worn oak beams on the outside, and old stone-built buildings still standing strong after hundreds of years. St Mary's Church Walking towards the sea brings you to 109 steps, which lead to a wonderful old church with one of the most incredible views of any cemetery we have ever come across. The view from up there is one of a kind, even before one gets to the Whitby Abbey ruins themselves, set against a deep blue sky like a painting out of the Louvre. Then package that all together with Dracula and Bram Stoker, fish and chips, old English pubs, sandy beaches, clifftop trails, and the surrounding Yorkshire Moors National Park. Sacre Coeur, Paris, France The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, France , commonly known as Sacré-Coeur Basilica and often simply Sacré-Coeur, is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica in Paris dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is located at the summit of the butte Montmartre, at an altitude of 130 meters (427 feet). The views of Paris from here are phenomenal. From this elevated perch, the Sacré-Coeur offers spectacular panoramic views of the entire city of Paris. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. This breathtaking view, combined with the basilica's stunning architecture, makes it a popular tourist destination. Not just for tourists, it also made it a rather beautiful spot for an evening celebrating our engagement, which we made formal in Cyprus the week prior. We were here literally a few days after, and it was a fitting spot. A place that is as alive during the night as it is during the day. As is Paris itself, of course! Not sure what was going on here, but it was a blast! Okay, so we admit, you will probably find Paris in practically every guide you will ever see about romantic destinations. Most likely in the top two or something, too. So sorry, not sorry about that, but here we are. We have no excuses, haha! Seriously, though, we need not mention all of the other Paris stuff, Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Catacombs, Arc de Triomphe, so on and so on... 11. Isla de Pasion, Cozumel, Mexico Everything about this place fits in with wanderlust and romance. Like a glove! Situated approximately 10 minutes by boat from Cozumel's main shore in Mexico , Isla de Pasion sits on the Caribbean Sea, offering secluded vibes and crystal-clear waters. This private island boasts powdery white sand beaches, fringed by palm trees and lapped by turquoise waters. We had the beach and the docks to ourselves! To get there, you can take an ATV through the main central area of Cozumel, on the only road out of town that goes past the main island resorts before drifting off towards the isolated pier where boats ferry those who find them to the island. Quite literally, you drive off the road onto a dirt path, dodging potholes and overhanging foliage all the way, before parking up in a clearing by a dock that has seen better days. After negotiating with the almost-no-English boat driver on price, we took a three-hour return and went off to enjoy this paradise island that would not look out of place in a Maldives brochure. It is a little bit of a nervous moment waiting for the boat to return, unnecessary, but still. Anyway, we got picked up, albeit a little late, and here we are telling you to do the same thing . Hoi An, Vietnam Hoi An in Vietnam is a captivating town renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage status and its captivating blend of history, culture, and charm. Located approximately 30 kilometers south of Da Nang city and situated beside the picturesque Thu Bon River, Hoi An offers a unique experience that is as romantic as it is cultural and, dare we say it, even spiritual. Stepping into Hoi An's ancient town feels like stepping back in time. Its well-preserved streets, lined with lantern-adorned yellow shophouses dating back to the 15th-19th centuries, exude a magical atmosphere. Its thriving market is the heartbeat of the place, covering most of the riverside streets with just about everything you can think of. The smells were beautiful too, no durian in sight (if you do not know Durian fruit, you will when you come to Asia), just warm incense and kind smiles to accompany them. This show happens every night at Hoi An Memories Theme Park. As the sun sets, the transformation in the town gets underway, with more lanterns than you can imagine on just about every tree and every store. This town has been a trading hub for so long, it has blended and frozen cultures from all over Asia . It tells this story in a mesmerizing show called Hoi An Memories, located on an island on the river. Add this experience to gorgeous local cafes and restaurants, friendly locals, and the monthly lantern festival, lighting candles on the river, and you have a place of romance and wanderlust. Period! A shop at Mulberry Silk Village. A big shout out to the incredible Mulberry Silk Village in Hoi An , where we stayed too. We are yet to write about this incredible experience on our blog, but it will be coming soon! This fabulous hotel includes a silk workshop with traditional techniques and hand-sewn clothing. Not to mention exquisite cuisine and several pools to enjoy and relax in. ⪢ Save for Later: 🔗 Magic in the Moonlight: Hoi An Night Market 13. Singapore Singapore , a sovereign island city-state in Southeast Asia, is a vibrant metropolis known for its futuristic skyline, colonial architecture, and diverse cultural tapestry. Sitting at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore is separated from Malaysia by the Johor Strait and Indonesia by the Singapore Strait. Its compact size, measuring just 728 square kilometers, makes it easily explorable on foot or by its efficient public transportation system. Singapore's unique character stems from its multicultural population, comprising Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Eurasian communities. This blend is reflected in its languages, religions, cuisine, and architecture, creating a truly fascinating experience for visitors. The Garden Rhapsody Light and Sound Show. Perhaps most famous for its iconic Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands, this futuristic city has plenty to romanticize about. If you do not know about these two places, you will see them featured just about anywhere Singapore is mentioned. But while this garden paradise, complete with the famous Supertree Grove and Cloud Forest Dome, is great during the day, at night it becomes a free light show beneath the trees and stars. Marina Bay Sands as seen from Gardens by the Bay. Meanwhile, Marina Bay Sands, which affords you a rooftop view with breathtaking views of the bay, becomes a shopping haven throughfare to the electric Spectra Light and Water Show, also free at night. Then, of course, there is probably the best Chinatown in all of Southeast Asia, with its epic Hawker Center complete with the world's first hawker Michelin Star, Hawker Chan. Oh, and then there is Little India, local islands to explore, a vibrant nightlife, and everything without the need for a car. Oh, and the incredible world-famous Jewel at Changi Airport (which by the way is one of the best airports in the world). Sold on Singapore yet? Chiang Rai, Thailand Chiang Rai, located in the mountainous northern region of Thailand , is a city brimming with cultural charm, natural beauty, and unique experiences. Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbor, Chiang Mai , Chiang Rai offers a more relaxed and authentic Thai experience, perfect for those seeking to delve deeper into the country's rich heritage and stunning landscapes. The Blue Temple, aka Wat Rong Suea Ten. As with most Thai cities, Chiang Rai is brimming with temples, amongst them some of the most famous in the country itself. The White Temple and the Blue Temple are indeed worthy of that title, which is saying something given there are over 40,000 across the land of smiles. The best part about here, however, was not so much the inner city, but more about the outskirts, where we found a fantastic Airbnb. At the time, we were renting a car and had a permanent stay in Chiang Mai. So we came up to the Rai via the only highway, which happens to be windy and mountainous and very nice, to stay in a 'dome', overlooking a delightful mountain valley with a bathtub on its balcony. Style Paidoi Resort is one of those that speaks for itself, and goes hand in hand with the romance, of course! We will get around to writing about it one day, but for now, you are just gonna have to trust us, and in the meantime, check out the sister temples and the very odd, and almost concerning Baan Dam Museum below. ⪢ Top Destinations in Chiang Rai: 🔗 Black House Museum 🔗 The Blue Temple 🔗 The White Temple 15. Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada Last on the list but by no means the least, Niagara Falls is a group of three waterfalls at the southern end of Niagara Gorge, spanning the border between the province of Ontario in Canada and the state of New York in the United States. The largest of the three is Horseshoe Falls, which straddles the international border of the two countries. It is also known as the Canadian Falls, and this is the one we visited. Twice, and for Jenn (as a Canadian from Toronto), many more on top of that! If you are looking for a romantic stroll, it doesn't get much better than Niagara Falls at night. Niagara Falls is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and for good reason. The falls are truly awe-inspiring, with a total height of 167 feet (51 m) and a width of 3,419 feet (1,043 m). The water flow rate is an average of 6,000 cubic meters per second (212,000 cubic feet per second), although this can vary depending on the time of year and weather conditions. It is a truly spectacular sight to witness, especially from the top of the falls or at night with the mesmerizing fireworks and light show. There are many different ways to experience Niagara Falls, from taking a boat ride to the bottom of the falls to walking behind them. As mentioned earlier, you can also take a boardwalk right up to the top, and you can even take a zip line back down to the bottom during the day or at night. There is so much to do here, including go-karts and 5D theatres. There are a ton of other activities around the falls, too, including amusements, museums, bars, restaurants, and resorts. There is something truly magical about Niagara Falls, and the energy here is powerful. Incredibly, it seems to be avoided on many a list out there, but trust us, it is worth it. It sounds WAY cooler and far more memorable! And if you don’t identify with your birth name any longer, change it and find something that resonates with the new you... Trust me, I’m a Scorpio. I’ve lived many lives in this one already... we are the transformers! Take a name in your spiritual transformation process (but do remember there is a key and relevance in your birth namesake in your spiritual journey). The Power of the Universe After asking the universe (manifesting, calling it into being) for a deep, real conversation about the things I’m passionate about with a stranger, I recently met a fascinating man while we were in Patong, Phuket, for Songkran, the WATER PARTY of the year and the Buddhist New Year in Thailand! When I returned from the washroom Leon was discussing ChatGPT with him and he hadn't tried it out... the first question he asked was 'Explain to me Athenian Democracy' and that says it all. He was a fellow Canadian at that, I rarely have met Canadians in my travels and/or fellow funeral directors (which I ALSO met here at this exact restaurant the day before, but that's a story for another time). He is a backpacker in his late 50s... a world traveler, writer, extremely spiritual & knowledgeable likes to dissect society, technology, politics, space, and quantum, and discuss ‘conspiracy theories’... he knew his ‘stuff’ (the ‘stuff’ that matters to me) he ‘spoke’ my language. All joking aside, I do speak 4 languages! When I finally got around to asking his name (often in travels we just get talking naturally and casually and introductions tend to fall to the wayside) he said ‘Well, I go by Dallas...’ I thought that was an odd way to put it, and it felt impersonal to me. I like to know the depths of people (I'm a Scorpio, we don't do surface level), and his statement felt lingering to me, so following my intuition, I said, “Yes, but what is your ‘birth/real name’?” (which I wouldn’t normally ask!) He said, ‘You know, it’s been so long since I’ve used it I can’t even bring myself to say it out loud...’ and he didn’t say it... But I could tell he thought/felt deeply about it... and I KNOW, as a healer, that was a takeaway for him. A call to heal his namesake wounds... often in lineage/generational patterns and childhood trauma wounds, etc. There’s no escaping the inner works when they come calling for you... And they will at some point in your journey. The Lady in Black The other fascinating thing I find about my name is that, oddly, I have many times in my life been referred to by strangers as ‘the lady in black’. Maybe it's due to the sense of mystery or allure my energy sends out. I remember when Leon and I stayed in Merida, Mexico, in June 2021 at an old Mansion, and the host kept calling me Lady in Black all weekend... for example, he brought a bottle of wine to our room and said, " You're welcome, Lady in Black." That was the weekend that Leon read aloud to me all over the grounds from the Book of Osiris written by a clairaudient that I had found a few days prior at the local bookstore. I paid 60 pesos for it and it is valued at USD 450 (I love books, however, I am no collector, etc, quite the opposite actually, since it's difficult to travel with tangible books). It started with a poem. Not one written for each other, but two lives quietly unfolding on separate sides of the world, linked by shared words and quiet admiration. Jenn and I met on Instagram—two poets writing through grief, growth, and longing. What began as mutual appreciation for each other’s work soon became something more: late-night conversations, voice notes filled with vulnerability, and eventually a leap of faith that changed everything. Living out of one suitcase (full seasonal wardrobes) is quite the challenge. Especially if you plan to film videos and take many photos …you’ll be wearing much of the same clothing throughout (unless you plan to shop and change often, which is a possibility, but also another expense to keep in mind). It’s really difficult to get things shipped or delivered when you are moving frequently. Many countries' postal systems are not up to par, so it can be very difficult to receive care packages or even online shopping. Snacks and foods you love from home will be missed. Trust us when we say Doritos DO NOT taste the same throughout the world, nor do most of the major fast food chains that you were hoping to have a bite at for a small taste of home. 5. Can You Be Alone or Full-Time Together With Your Travel Person? Spending a lot of time alone or with another person while traveling can easily lead to depression and anxiety, both from loneliness and co-dependency. When traveling solo, you need to remember that you may not speak the language, so communication and friendships can become very difficult. If you fall ill, you won’t have a support system with you. When traveling with a partner, you spend 24/7 together during high-stress times, and it’s not always easy to remain amicable when you are exhausted from travel or trying to overcome an obstacle or language barrier. We made our way straight to South Pointe Park, a quieter stretch at the southern tip, with silky sand and fewer crowds. Sunbathers and beachgoers enjoy a breezy day by the turquoise waters of Miami Beach, Florida, with seaweed lining the sandy shore. The water was cool, the breeze constant, and the view stretched endlessly in both directions. Ocean Drive, just inland from the beach, is where Miami truly comes alive. A vibrant scene on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach captures the iconic Art Deco architecture, colorful outdoor cafes, and a sleek purple sports car cruising by, all under the sway of palm trees. Sports cars glided past as we wandered beside pastel hotels, elegant cafés, and bars offering cocktail deals and cold beers. We searched for the historic Art Deco Quarter, walking the full length of the street and eventually looping back to a standout restaurant we’d passed earlier: The Carlyle. A sunny day on Ocean Drive, Florida, with palm trees swaying gently above colorful festival tents and visitors strolling along the iconic street. The Carlyle on Ocean Drive Set in a 1940s Art Deco building, The Carlyle isn’t just a restaurant and hotel; it’s a piece of Miami film history. This was one of the filming locations for The Birdcage (1996), and it's retained all its nostalgic charm. White umbrellas, outdoor seating, and a bold façade that’s perfect for people-watching. We stopped here for a well-earned drink and found the staff helpful and welcoming. They even gave us directions to the historic district we were looking to locate! The transformation began in the late 1800s when developers and visionaries like Carl Fisher saw potential in the island’s natural beauty. But it wasn't just about building hotels — the beach itself had to be created. Beachgoers bask in the sun and enjoy the waves on a vibrant day at Miami Beach, Florida. ⪢ A Man-Made Miracle Much of today’s Miami Beach shoreline, especially the wide sandy stretches we walked on at South Pointe, is the result of massive man-made efforts. It gave us just the right mix of relaxation, scenery, and city buzz. The short drive to Fort Lauderdale was smooth, and we loved having a calm beach day before bedding down for the night in Florida City (1 hour from the cruise port). 💡 Tip: Many cruisers also stay overnight in Miami Beach before sailing. Our nostalgic stopover before sailing the Atlantic, there’s something timeless about Daytona Beach. For us, it was a short but memorable pitstop during our United States road trip from Michigan to Fort Lauderdale, before boarding a two-week transatlantic cruise. It was Leon’s first time in Daytona; for Jenn, a return visit many years after driving on the beach and visiting the iconic racetrack with her kids. This time, we didn’t hit the track or cruise the sand in a car, but we did rediscover the charm, warmth, and quirky character that Daytona offers. From oceanfront sunsets to hot-dog stand kindness, here’s how our two-day visit unfolded, along with all you need to know about visiting Daytona Beach in Florida. It earned fame in the early 1900s when automobile and motorcycle races began on the hard-packed sands, eventually leading to the formation of NASCAR. Daytona has since become synonymous with motorsport, spring break culture, and scenic beach drives. But Daytona isn’t just about speed and spectacle. Its roots run deep, with preserved historic districts, retro motels, and a long-standing reputation as a classic Florida getaway. Our Beachside Stay: Sun Viking Lodge We booked two nights at Sun Viking Lodge, a beachfront gem with one foot in nostalgia and the other in family-friendly comfort. Think ocean views, poolside loungers, and direct beach access via stairs that lead right onto the sand. We stayed in the main hotel building, which had an indoor pool and vending machines. There’s also a motel-style section with two stories overlooking the parking lot and some rooms facing the sea. Although the on-site restaurant is currently closed (with talk of reopening soon), our room was clean and the bed surprisingly comfy. The only minor issue? The air conditioner sounded like it was preparing for takeoff. Still, we slept well and woke to waves and golden light pouring through the curtains. We’ll do a full review of the lodge in a separate post, but for now, it’s a solid and affordable stay, especially if you want to be steps from the beach. Sunset Strolls & Sunrise Magic We didn’t do Daytona at high-octane speed. Instead, we slowed down. We walked the beach multiple times, once at sunset and again at sunrise. The beach itself is wide, long, and flat, perfect for driving (if you fancy it) or just ambling peacefully with the Atlantic breeze in your hair. One of the quirks of Daytona is watching cars and even motorcycles coast along the beach. It’s surreal at first, but there’s a beauty in the balance between machines and nature, especially when there’s plenty of space to keep vehicles and beachgoers separated safely. Congo River Mini Golf – With Gators! We’re always up for a good mini golf course, and Congo River Golf did not disappoint. This wasn’t just putt-putt. It was a jungle-themed, waterfall-laced, cave-twisting 18-hole adventure with real live alligators on site. The course was full of fun surprises, including a “spin the wheel” feature at some holes, where random tasks or challenges are added (think "use your non-dominant hand" or "stand on one foot"). Leon scored a hole-in-one… then Jenn did too, on the same hole! Jenn still won overall by four shots. She’s the putting champion of Closer Lives. We were told by locals not to miss Dairy Bar, a nostalgic window-serve spot in Port Orange, known for its chili dogs, shakes, and old-school charm. We arrived close to closing, ordered two hot dogs and a milkshake (total: under $10!), and realized the card system was essentially a cash ATM; our transaction didn’t go through. But instead of cancelling our order, the owner smiled and said, “Just enjoy them. You can come back and pay tomorrow.” That kind of trust? Rare. We did a mad dash to find a working ATM and returned with cash before closing. The water is generally swimmable, with moderate waves that are fun for boogie boarding and safe for kids in shallow zones (always swim near lifeguards, although we did not see any while we were there).
