  • The AI Contract Manager: Challenges on the Path to Smarter Paperwork

Picture this: You're drowning in a sea of contracts, each one a potential minefield of legal jargon and hidden clauses. Wouldn't it be great if you had a super-smart assistant to help you navigate all this paperwork? Enter artificial intelligence (AI) for contract management . It's like having a tireless, lightning-fast team member who can read through thousands of pages in seconds, spot potential issues, and even help draft new agreements. Sounds amazing, right? Well, it is! But as with any new technology, bringing AI into the world of contracts isn't all smooth sailing. Let's chat about some of the speed bumps companies hit when trying to make their contract management smarter. In This Post... ● Data Ducks in a Row ● Playing Nice with Other Systems ● Keeping Secrets Secret ● Winning Hearts and Minds ● Trusting the Robot Lawyer ● Wrapping It Up ⪢ More From Our Lifestyle Blog 1. Getting Your Data Ducks in a Row Imagine trying to teach a child to read using a mix of books, handwritten notes, and ancient scrolls - in different languages. Sounds tough, right? That's kind of what it's like for AI when it looks at most companies' contract archives. The problem is that contracts come in all shapes and sizes. Some are neatly typed up in Word docs, others are scanned PDFs (maybe with coffee stains), and there might even be a few handwritten ones lurking in a dusty file cabinet. For AI to work its magic, all this needs to be cleaned up and standardized. It's like trying to organize the world's messiest closet. You've got to sort everything, maybe digitize old paper contracts, and create a system that makes sense. It's a big job, but think of it as spring cleaning for your contract collection. Once it's done, not only will your AI be happy, but you'll probably find it easier to manage contracts even without the AI's help! 2. Playing Nice with Other Systems Now, let's say you've got your AI contract whiz up and running. Great! But wait - it needs to talk to your customer database to pull in client info, and it should probably update your accounting system when a new deal is signed. Suddenly, your cool new AI tool needs to learn to play nice with all your other business software. It's like introducing a new friend to your existing group. Sometimes they hit it off right away, and sometimes... well, it can get awkward. Your shiny new AI might speak a different "language" than your older systems, or they might not want to share information easily. This is where your IT team earns their superhero capes. They need to figure out how to get all these different systems chatting happily with each other. It might mean updating some older software, creating some custom connections, or even rethinking how your whole IT setup works. It's not always easy, but when everything's humming along smoothly, it's like conducting a beautiful digital orchestra. 3. Keeping Secrets Secret Contracts are often full of stuff you don't want the world to see - kind of like your diary, but for business. When you bring AI into the mix, you need to make sure it respects that privacy. Think of it like hiring a new employee who's going to handle sensitive information. You need to set clear rules about what they can and can't do with that data. Can the AI store contracts in the cloud? Who gets to see what the AI finds? How do you make sure the AI doesn't accidentally spill the beans on your top-secret business deals? This is where your legal team and IT security folks need to put their heads together. They'll need to set up strong protections, like digital locks and alarm systems for your data. They'll also need to make sure your AI system follows all the rules about data privacy (and there are a lot of them these days). It's a balancing act between letting the AI do its job and keeping your business secrets safe. Get it right, and you'll have a trustworthy digital assistant that knows how to keep a secret. 4. Winning Hearts and Minds So, you've got this incredible AI system all set up. It's secure, it's connected to everything, and it's ready to revolutionize how you handle contracts. There's just one tiny problem: your team is looking at it like it's an alien that's just landed on their desks. Change can be scary, especially when it involves trusting important work to a computer. Some folks might worry the AI will make mistakes, others might fear it's going to take their jobs, and some might just prefer their trusty old highlighter and sticky notes. This is where the human touch becomes super important. It's not enough to just plonk the new system on people's desks and say, "Here, use this." You need to show them why it's awesome, how it can make their lives easier, and most importantly, how to use the darn thing. Think of it like introducing a new recipe to a picky eater. You might need to start small, let them help in the "cooking" process, and show them how tasty the result can be. Offer plenty of training, be patient with questions, and celebrate the wins when the AI helps someone save time or spot a tricky clause in a contract. Remember, the goal is to have humans and AI working together like a dream team, not to replace people with robots. 5. Trusting the Robot Lawyer Last but not least, there's the million-dollar question: Can we trust what the AI tells us about our contracts? AI has gotten incredibly smart, but it's not perfect. Sometimes it might misunderstand a weirdly worded clause, or it might not catch the subtle implications of certain terms. And let's face it, in the world of contracts, those little details can make a big difference. It's a bit like using a GPS. Most of the time, it'll get you where you need to go. But sometimes it might try to send you down a road that doesn't exist anymore, or it might not know about that shortcut all the locals use. The key is to use AI as a powerful assistant, not as a replacement for human expertise. Have your legal eagles double-check the AI's work on important contracts. Use AI to flag potential issues, but have a human make the final call. And always be on the lookout for ways to improve the AI's accuracy over time. Wrapping It Up Bringing AI into contract management is like upgrading from a bicycle to a sports car. It's faster, more powerful, and can take you further than ever before. But it also requires some new skills, careful handling, and regular maintenance to keep it running smoothly. Yes, there are challenges along the way. You'll need to organize your data, connect your systems, keep everything secure, get your team on board, and always keep a human eye on the AI's work. But with some planning, patience, and perseverance, the payoff can be huge. Imagine being able to review hundreds of contracts in minutes, spot risks before they become problems, and free up your legal team to focus on the big-picture stuff. That's the promise of AI in contract management. So, is it worth navigating these challenges? If you ask me, absolutely. Just remember, the goal isn't to replace humans with robots. It's to give humans super-powered tools to do their jobs better than ever. And that's something worth working towards, don't you think? It allows users to search for and compare flights from various airlines and booking sites to find the best deals on airfare. With its user-friendly interface, travelers can easily input their travel details, such as destinations, dates, and preferred airlines, to quickly access a list of available flight options. Google Flights also offers features like price tracking, flexible date searches, and insights on when to book to help users make informed decisions when planning their trips. Overall, Google Flights simplifies the process of finding and booking flights, making it a valuable tool for travelers seeking convenience and savings. ⪢ Why We Recommend Google Flights One of our favorite features of Google Flights is how easy it is to compare prices, in particular being able to see prices on the date calendar 6 months in advance. We tend to use it to do our initial research, and then go on to compare it with other booking sites that we use. It is super easy to navigate, and if you are like us and like to plan, it can help to make this process smoother and more manageable. 2. Booking.com Booking.com is a popular online platform that allows users to search and book accommodations, flights, rental cars, and other travel services worldwide. With a user-friendly interface and a wide range of options, Booking.com provides travelers with the convenience of finding and booking their desired travel arrangements quickly and easily. The platform also offers reviews, ratings, and helpful information to assist users in making informed decisions about their travel plans. Whether you're looking for a budget-friendly hostel or a luxury resort, Booking.com is a go-to website for all your travel booking needs. ⪢ Why We Recommend Booking.com You can usually find a host of last-minute deals on hotels on Booking.com , and it also has a ton of unique experiences, for example, staying the night in a docked cruise ship room. We particularly like its reward system where you can go up levels, gain points, and get money, discounts, and perks. While this is not our exclusive travel site, it is one we use frequently when planning and booking our adventures. 3. Expedia Expedia is a global travel company that operates an online travel booking platform. It offers a wide range of services, including booking flights, hotels, car rentals, cruises, vacation packages, and activities. Expedia provides travelers with a convenient way to plan and book their trips all in one place. The company aims to make travel planning easier and more accessible for people around the world. ⪢ Why We Recommend Expedia Tried and true, we have been using Expedia since before we started traveling full-time. It is generally our go-to website/app, as it offers a bit of everything. We love Expedia's reward scheme, which offers bonus points on cars, hotels, flights, and package deals. Plus, when you reach gold status like us, you can get first picks, amazing discounts, room upgrades, and often special treatment such as welcome drinks and late checkouts. Expedia also offers excellent customer service and is a long-standing, reputable company. ⪢ SAVE CAD 30 when you spend CAD 230 Book your first trip with Expedia as a NEW USER, be it for a hotel, car rental, or flight, and get a $30 discount, no strings attached! 4. Users can easily list their properties or search for unique and affordable accommodations through the platform, providing a more personalized and authentic travel experience compared to traditional hotels. ⪢ Why We Recommend Airbnb We have used this platform almost exclusively in the last 3 years, with over 30 bookings, and have had fantastic experiences almost every time. We highly recommend the safety and security that Airbnb offers, with protection for renters that you will not get with private rentals. We also enjoy the choice on offer and the fact that they offer substantial discounts for monthly bookings. ⪢ Pro Tip Be sure to use the refined search options, read house rules, and check about sections and cancellation policies as they can vary. You do want to make sure there are no surprises! Check out our top Airbnb Safety Recommendations blog for more tips. 5. Kiwi.com Kiwi.com is an innovative online travel agency that offers unique flight itineraries by combining flights from various airlines to create the most cost-effective and efficient routes for travelers. With a user-friendly interface, Kiwi.com allows users to seamlessly book flights, accommodations, and transportation all in one place. The platform also provides a range of travel services such as virtual interlining, price alerts, and 24/7 customer support to ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience for its customers. ⪢ Why We Recommend Kiwi.com Known for unique flight search features, Kiwi is a great follow-up to Google Flights. It is super easy to use and navigate, and more often than not, we find that Kiwi offers better prices on shorter flights, in particular. That being said, be aware that prices do bump up a little if you choose to opt in to insurance and upgrade options, which they do push fairly aggressively. If you are a budget traveler looking for the most affordable flight options, however, Kiwi is the place to be. 6. Grab / Bolt / Uber Car-sharing apps have revolutionized the way people commute, offering a convenient and efficient alternative to traditional transportation methods. Grab, Bolt, and Uber are three popular car-sharing apps that provide users with on-demand transportation services. Here is a brief overview of each: ⪢ Grab Grab is a Southeast Asian ride-hailing app that offers a wide range of services, including car rides, motorbike rides, and food delivery. It operates in several countries across Asia, providing users with a reliable and safe transportation option. Grab is known for its user-friendly interface, multiple payment options, and various promotional offers. ⪢ Bolt Bolt , formerly known as Taxify, is a European ride-hailing app that has expanded its services to other regions, including Africa and Australia. Bolt focuses on providing affordable transportation options with transparent pricing. The app is popular for its quick response times, professional drivers, and environmentally friendly initiatives, such as carbon offset programs. ⪢ Uber Uber is one of the pioneers of the ride-hailing industry and operates in numerous countries worldwide. Known for its extensive network of drivers, Uber offers a variety of services, including UberX, UberPool, and UberBlack. The app is recognized for its user customization options, real-time tracking features, and integration with public transportation services in some cities. ⪢ Why We Recommend Ride-Sharing Apps Whenever we land anywhere, pretty much our first go-to is any one of the above, depending on which is available. Often, you will find that local taxi services charge more, are less secure, and are less reliable. Using ride-sharing apps provides us with the safety and security that we can track where we are going, are covered by a major brand, and also by licensed drivers. 7. Turo Turo is a peer-to-peer car rental company that allows car owners to rent out their vehicles to others. Founded in 2009, Turo provides a platform where users can list their cars for rent, setting their prices and availability. This gives renters a wide variety of vehicle options to choose from, ranging from economy cars to luxury vehicles. Turo offers a convenient and flexible alternative to traditional car rental services, allowing users to book cars for short-term use directly from local car owners. ⪢ Why We Recommend Turo Turo is a much more affordable option than traditional car rental companies, with a vast array of vehicle options. You can find luxury or economy vehicles, along with great meet-up/pick-up spot flexibility. Sometimes you can even pick up your ride without even having to see anyone! Another benefit is that with traditional car rental companies, you are not allowed to book a car for more than 30 days, whereas with Turo, you can rent for up to 6 months at a time. This is a game-changer if you are looking for long-term rentals and can save you money and time! ⪢ Sign Up and Save Get 30% off your first private car hire booking with Turo with Closer Lives! 8. Klook Klook is a popular online platform that offers a wide range of travel activities, tours, and experiences for travelers around the world. With Klook, users can easily discover and book unique experiences such as sightseeing tours, attraction tickets, food tours, outdoor adventures, and more in various destinations. The platform provides convenient access to a diverse selection of activities, making it easier for travelers to plan and enhance their trips. Klook is known for its user-friendly interface, competitive prices, and reliable customer service, making it a go-to choice for travelers looking to explore and make the most of their travel experiences. ⪢ Why We Recommend Klook When it comes to booking activities and experiences, Klook has been a complete game-changer for us! While we are not typically big fans of tours in general, we do find that in many cases they are the only solid option to explore places, such as Korea's DMZ or Thailand's islands. Klook offers safety, security, and efficiency, giving us peace of mind that not only will everything be organized, but that we have excellent customer service to fall back on if things do not work out. They help to eliminate language barriers, offer licensed and knowledgeable guides, and operate in pretty much every country we have visited. They do offer plenty of other handy essentials such as rentals, hotels, and even SIM cards too, making them a valuable must-have travel tool. ⪢ Save 5% on Your First Booking Get 5% off your first booking on anything on the Klook app with our special promo code BetterOnApp. Plus, get 5% off your first hotel booking with our special promo code HotelOnApp. 9. 12go 12Go is a platform that provides online booking services for transportation and travel options across various countries. Whether you are looking to book flights, trains, buses, ferries, or other modes of transportation, 12Go offers a convenient way to compare schedules, prices, and availability all in one place. ⪢ Why We Recommend 12go While 12go specializes in Asia, they are rapidly expanding their reach across the globe and operate in over 12,000 destinations. With a super easy-to-use website, we are using 12go more and more to find the best flights, and in particular, inter-city transport options for coaches, trains, and transfers. We like the ticketing system, which exclusively uses QR codes, and the members' area, which keeps track of all of our bookings. 10. Trusted Housesitters Trusted Housesitters is a platform that connects homeowners with trustworthy individuals who are willing to look after their homes and pets while they are away. Homeowners can find reliable house sitters to take care of their property, plants, and pets, providing peace of mind during their absence. House sitters, on the other hand, get the opportunity to stay in unique locations around the world for free in exchange for their services. Trusted Housesitters offers a safe and secure way for both parties to connect and build mutually beneficial relationships. ⪢ Why We Recommend Trusted Housesitters Trusted Housesitters is a great accommodation option, especially for countries such as Canada , the U.S., Australia , and the U.K. This is mainly because there are so many options available, and these are typically quite expensive countries to visit if you are looking for an Airbnb. It makes countries that seem out of reach more affordable, but do keep in mind that there is an annual sign-up fee, and it can be a challenge to align the dates and times to match what you are looking for. Sometimes the locations can be quite remote and may need a vehicle (which sometimes can be offered by homeowners). With the proper research and some good luck, this can be a way to make your monthly accommodation cost similar to the likes of South East Asia if you average out flight and food costs, given that there is no rent to pay. Most options do include pets, so this may be something to consider if you are not comfortable looking after animals. ⪢ Get 25% Off Sign up to Trusted Housesitters and receive 25% off your annual membership! 11. Wanderlog Wanderlog is a versatile travel planning tool designed to help users organize and manage their trips with ease. Whether you are planning a weekend getaway or a month-long adventure, Wanderlog offers a user-friendly platform to create itineraries, save important information such as flights and accommodations, and discover new places to explore. With features like interactive maps, collaboration options, and the ability to access your plans offline, Wanderlog is the perfect companion for travelers looking to make the most out of their journeys. ⪢ Why We Recommend Wanderlog Wanderlog has been a game-changer for us, and we do enjoy using this platform! With Wanderlog's all-in-one hotel search, you never need to switch tabs again. You can compare results from trusted booking sites like Airbnb, Google, Expedia , Hotels.com , Booking.com , and more all in one place, and we are yet to find anything that works as well. As a bonus, Wanderlog will notify you when hotel prices drop, and it easily synchronizes with your Google calendar to keep you organized. It can even detect bookings directly from your email! Aside from all that, you can create guides, plan routes offline, check reviews, and even create an interactive map of where you have been around the world. Brilliant! 12. Wise Wise is a digital banking platform that offers a range of financial services designed to make managing money easier and more efficient. With Wise, users can open a bank account, send and receive money internationally, get a debit card, and access other banking features all from their mobile device or computer. One of the key features of Wise is its low fees for international money transfers, making it a popular choice for people who need to send money across borders frequently. The platform also prides itself on transparency, providing users with real-time exchange rates and showing exactly how much money will be received by the recipient. ⪢ Why We Recommend Wise An essential tool for us, we have found Wise to be a great tool for avoiding international fees and transferring money. Wise is free from hidden fees and exchange rate markups and has made moving our money around so much easier. We never thought moving money between our British and Canadian banks would be such a hassle, but it is, and Wise has helped eliminate all of that stress. The app is super easy to use, has never failed us, and is an essential part of our toolkit! ⪢ Get a Fee Free Transfer of up to 800 CAD Get a fee-free transfer of up to CAD 800! You can always transfer more, but Wise will waive the fee on that first amount! 13. Curve (Samsung) Curve is a fintech company providing a banking app and a Curve Card. Through the Curve Banking app, users can conveniently oversee all their bank accounts, conduct transactions, monitor expenses, and more. The Curve Card is a tangible debit card that can be associated with various bank cards, enabling users to alternate between them for payments. The Curve Card is designed to work seamlessly with Samsung devices, allowing users to make contactless payments via Samsung Pay. This collaboration offers enhanced convenience and adaptability for Samsung users seeking to simplify their payment options. ⪢ Why We Recommend Curve Curve has been a revelation for us in how we spend our money when we travel, with a whole raft of key benefits, including 1% cashback with many retailers. One of the biggest features is that Curve stops your debit and credit cards from charging you foreign exchange fees, saving you up to 3% on every transaction abroad. You can link all of your bank cards to ONE Mastercard, which you can easily interchange on the app. It is also the ONLY mobile wallet app that comes with a physical card. Using your Curve card is also FREE from ALL ATMs, so you don't have to get out cash or convert currencies before you travel. You will always get the market-rate exchange rate, no matter what debit or credit card you use. As if those features were not already enough, Curve is the only app on the planet that gives you the power to switch payments from one card to another, up to 120 days after you've made a purchase. We love this feature, which can make a huge difference to how you manage your finances, especially if you accidentally charge the wrong card or account. 14. GigSky eSIM GigSky is an eSIM provider that offers a convenient and flexible solution for travelers looking to avoid the high costs and hassle associated with traditional SIM cards and roaming charges. An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a digital alternative to physical SIM cards that allows users to download and activate mobile data plans directly on their devices. GigSky, one of the pioneering companies in the eSIM space, allows users to stay connected seamlessly across 190 countries and even on 200 cruise ships and 30 airlines. Unlike other eSIM providers, GigSky operates as a "heavy" Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), meaning it provisions its SIMs, ensuring a stable and high-quality connection by partnering with multiple networks. ⪢ Why We Recommend GigSky eSIM GigSky stands out due to its ease of use, reliability, and extensive global coverage. You only need to download one eSIM from GigSky, which can be used across multiple plans without the need to constantly switch or download new eSIMs, a feature that sets it apart from competitors. The GigSky app is user-friendly, allowing you to download data packages before your trip so you're connected the moment you land. Additionally, the app remains accessible even if you run out of data, providing peace of mind. GigSky's network operator status, global partnerships, and unique offerings like offshore and inflight data plans make it a top choice for travelers. While not the cheapest, GigSky offers competitive pricing, superior service, and the added convenience of exclusive discounts and promotions. ⪢ Save 10% on Your First Order Try GigSky for FREE! Get a FREE 100 MB plan to almost anywhere. No credit card is required. Plus, SAVE 10% on your first order over $4 with our special discount code CLOSERLIVES10. 15. Self-care Sundays are the perfect way to recharge and prepare for the week ahead. Image Source: Mart Production By incorporating fashion and fragrances into your routine, you can create a luxurious and rejuvenating experience. This article will walk you through the steps to make your self-care Sundays both stylish and fragrant. In This Post... ● Importance of Self-Care Sundays ● Creating a Fashion Ritual ● Fragrance Rituals for Self-Care ● Enhancing Your Self-Care Routine ● Embrace the Rituals ⪢ More From Our Lifestyle Blog The Importance of Self-Care Sundays ⪢ What is Self-Care? Self-care involves activities that promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It's about taking time for yourself to relax, reflect, and rejuvenate. Self-care Sundays provide a dedicated day to focus on these activities, ensuring you start your week feeling refreshed and energized. ⪢ Why Fashion & Fragrances? Fashion and fragrances play a significant role in how we feel about ourselves. Wearing your favorite outfit or fragrance can lift your mood, boost confidence, and create a sense of well-being. By integrating these elements into your self-care routine, you can enhance the overall experience. Creating a Fashion Ritual ⪢ Declutter & Organize Your Wardrobe Start your self-care Sunday by decluttering and organizing your wardrobe. This not only makes it easier to find your favorite pieces but also creates a sense of order and calm. Donate or recycle items you don't wear, and neatly arrange the rest. Image source: Cottonbro studio ⪢ Choose a Relaxing Outfit Select an outfit that makes you feel comfortable and stylish. Consider soft fabrics like cotton or silk that feel gentle against your skin. The goal is to wear something that allows you to relax while also making you feel good about yourself. ⪢ Incorporate Accessories Accessories can elevate any outfit and add a touch of personal style. Choose a few favorite pieces, such as a statement necklace, a cozy scarf, or an elegant hat. These small additions can make a big difference in how you feel. Fragrance Rituals for Self-Care ⪢ Selecting the Right Fragrance Fragrances have the power to influence our emotions and set the tone for the day. Choose a scent that aligns with your mood and the environment you want to create. For a calming effect, consider fragrances with notes of lavender, chamomile, or sandalwood. For an energizing boost, opt for citrus or peppermint scents. Image Source: Bảo Phúc ⪢ Applying Fragrance Applying your chosen fragrance can be a mindful and soothing ritual. Spray it on pulse points such as your wrists, neck, and behind your ears. You can also lightly mist your clothes or a cozy blanket to surround yourself with the scent. ⪢ Fragrance Monthly Subscription Consider joining a fragrance monthly subscription  service to explore new scents and keep your routine fresh. This way, you can try different fragrances each month without committing to a full-sized bottle. It adds an element of surprise and excitement to your self-care Sundays. Enhancing Your Self-Care Routine ⪢ Create a Relaxing Environment Set the scene for your self-care Sunday by creating a calming environment. Light scented candles, play soft music and dim the lights. This will help you unwind and fully immerse yourself in the experience. ⪢ Pamper Yourself Take time to pamper yourself with a luxurious bath or shower. Use fragrant bath salts, oils, or bubbles to enhance the sensory experience. Follow up with a moisturizing body lotion or oil to keep your skin feeling soft and hydrated. ⪢ Enjoy a Mindful Activity Engage in a mindful activity that you enjoy, such as reading a book, journaling, or practicing yoga. These activities help you relax, clear your mind, and focus on the present moment. ⪢ Try a DIY Fashion Project Get creative with a DIY fashion project. Whether it's customizing a piece of clothing or creating new accessories, this can be a fun and rewarding way to express your style. You might try tie-dyeing a shirt, sewing a patch onto a jacket, or making your jewelry. The process can be both relaxing and satisfying, and you'll have a unique item to show for it. Image source: Mart Production ⪢ Incorporate Aromatherapy Aromatherapy can enhance your self-care routine by using essential oils to promote relaxation and well-being. You can use an essential oil diffuser, add a few drops to your bath, or apply them to your skin (diluted with a carrier oil). Popular choices for relaxation include lavender, chamomile, and eucalyptus. • What the HECK is 'Grombre' Hair and WHY Are SO Many People Embracing It?

A new movement is emerging - one that challenges the conventional norms of hair color and celebrates the natural beauty of gray hair. Also, a process many people choose to go through to get to their beautiful, natural silver hair. Enter "grombre," a term that's been making waves in the realm of hair care and self-expression . But what exactly is grombre , and why is it gaining traction among people of all ages and backgrounds all around the globe? In This Post... ● What the Heck is Grombre Hair? ● The Rise of Grombre ● Embracing Authenticity ● The Power of Representation ● Embracing Grombre Grey Hair Resources ● Recommended Products ● Embracing the Silver Lining ● Jennifer David on Closer Lives What the Heck is Grombre Hair? At first glance, the term "grombre" might sound like a curious blend of words. But in reality, it's a clever fusion of "gray" and "ombre ," two elements that are key to understanding this phenomenon. ⪢ Gray/Grey Traditionally associated with aging, gray hair has often been viewed as something to be covered up or concealed . However, the grombre movement challenges this notion, encouraging individuals to embrace their natural gray hair as a symbol of authenticity and self-acceptance . ⪢ Ombre A popular hair coloring technique characterized by a gradual transition from darker roots to lighter ends, ombre typically involves dyeing hair in shades of brown, blonde, or even vibrant colors. In the context of grombre, the term refers to the natural progression from one's original hair color to shades of gray or silver .   Many, if not most, people go through this process when they decide to ditch the hair dye and naturally embrace their grey hair .  The process entails naturally allowing your hair to grow out, no longer dyeing your hair.  Some people do this only until they can cut it to a length suitable for them.  Others, like myself, desire to maintain their length and let the grow-out process progress until the hair is completely grown out or cut away.  So although this is often a temporary process, and look , temporary can often mean YEARS with a multitude of different lengths in the balance of the old and new hair throughout the process. The Rise of Grombre The grombre movement didn't emerge overnight; rather, it's the culmination of a cultural shift towards greater acceptance of diverse beauty standards and a rejection of ageism and the idea that grey hair equals old or aging in the beauty industry.   Social media platforms like Instagram have played a pivotal role in amplifying the voices of grey hair advocates , like myself, who proudly share photos of their silver locks alongside messages of self-love and empowerment in attempts to normalize grey hair at all ages and phases of life.  Embracing Authenticity At its core, grombre is about more than just hair - it's a symbol of embracing authenticity and rejecting societal pressures to conform to narrow standards of beauty . By embracing their natural gray hair, individuals are reclaiming ownership of their appearance and celebrating the unique journey that has led them to this point. They also choose to go through a process that they know can be challenging yet rewarding in so many different ways. The Power of Representation One of the most powerful aspects of the grombre movement is its role in promoting representation and diversity in the beauty industry. By showcasing a wide range of hair colors and textures, grombre advocates are challenging the notion that beauty is synonymous with youthfulness and that grey hair equals old, encouraging others to embrace their unique features. The grombre movement serves as a powerful reminder that beauty comes in many forms. Whether you're rocking a full head of silver strands or just beginning to notice a few gray hairs, embracing your natural hair color is an act of self-love and empowerment. Grombre not only teaches us about self-acceptance, as it is a temporary process for most of us , but it also serves as the natural progression to a full grey hair transformation. This way of going grey also reminds us that positive, healthy changes can take time and patience. It also helps with the dialogue in our daily lives. Often thrusting us into advocacy and conversations with others, even when we weren't prepared for all of that. Because many people will be vocal about their thoughts and opinions on grey hair and aging, we get questioned about the choices and decisions we've made when ditching the hair dye and the whys. It can become quite evident early on that we will have to be strong in our decisions when sporting a grombre look because people have so many questions.  The grombre look creates curiosity and questioning in others that the advocacy happens whether you want it to or not! Embracing Grombre So here's to grombre and here’s to those choosing to rock one : a celebration of gray, a testament to authenticity, and a reminder that beauty knows no age. Because grey hair starts as young as the late teens and early twenties, which we still don’t seem to realize because we have been taught by society to hide it unless you are OLD , like REALLY OLD .  Is it any wonder why we, as a society, have equated silver hair with age?  It’s only after decades of dyeing and hiding our white hair that women are finally saying ENOUGH to dyeing their hair and being exhausted from spending so much money, time, and life energy trying to hide it. But not anymore. We are changing the narrative, and for many of us, it starts with the grombre.    We’ve had enough, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to see so many people embracing their natural hair even as early as their late teens and early twenties. It's always easier when it's in fashion or a trend, but this opens up the world to more profound and longer-term acceptance in the movement. We'll take what we can get!   Through my growth, I've discovered a refreshed sense of courage, confidence, and self-love , and I'm proud to advocate for a movement that celebrates the beauty of authenticity . For me this is one of the final steps in a physical representation demonstrating what I have embraced inwardly for a very long time. Authentically accepting the fullness of me. And for many others, it's one of the first steps to this ! Have you ever thought about ditching the dye and giving the natural grombre a try? Now is a great time to do it while grey hair and natural hair are all the trend! But that is a blog post for another day. • Added Pressures Gen X Women Face with Grey Hair

In a world obsessed with youthfulness and perfection , the journey of Generation X (Gen X) women embracing their natural grey hair or their silver hair, which now seems to be the preferred reference, is nothing short of revolutionary . For many of us, our hair isn't just HAIR; it's intertwined with the very core of our identity , our sense of self, where we 'fit' in society, and our journey through life. Yet, as we see the signs of aging, face societal pressures, and personal growth, the decision to go grey or ditch the dye becomes a poignant reflection of our values and our commitment to authenticity. Henna not only served as a means of beautification but also held cultural and religious significance. It symbolized fertility, prosperity, and protection against evil spirits. Similarly, ancient Greeks and Romans practiced hair dyeing using various natural ingredients. Wealthy individuals had access to more elaborate hair dyeing techniques , while commoners used simpler methods with locally available resources. The popularity of hair dyeing persisted throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance , albeit with different cultural and social connotations. However, the Renaissance also marked the beginning of an era where societal expectations regarding beauty became increasingly rigid . Women, in particular, were expected to adhere to idealized standards of femininity, which often included maintaining a youthful appearance. As a result, the pressure to dye one's hair to conceal signs of aging intensified.   This pressure only grew stronger with the advent of mass-produced commercial hair dyes in the 19th century . Chemists began experimenting with synthetic compounds to create vibrant and long-lasting hair colors, catering to the rising demand for cosmetic products. Advertisements and media further reinforced the idea that youthfulness and beauty were synonymous, leading many women to feel compelled to dye their hair to conform to these standards. Gen X Women and Grey Hair The Generation X group , born roughly between the early 1960s and late 1970s , found themselves navigating these societal pressures during their formative years. As they entered adulthood in the 1980s and 1990s, they were bombarded with images of airbrushed perfection in magazines, movies, and television . The pressure to maintain a youthful appearance, including covering up signs of aging such as grey hair, was particularly pronounced for this generation. Despite the historical roots of hair dyeing and its cultural significance, the practice has also perpetuated harmful stereotypes and unrealistic beauty ideals . Embracing natural grey hair challenges these stereotypes and encourages individuals to celebrate their authenticity and embrace the natural aging process. It represents a rejection of societal pressures and a reclaiming of individual identity and self-expression. The historical evolution of hair dyeing reflects broader shifts in societal attitudes towards beauty and aging. By understanding this historical context, we can better appreciate the significance of advocating for natural grey hair and challenging the pressures placed on women, including those from the Generation X group , to conform to narrow beauty standards. The Cultural Landscape Growing up in the vibrant era of the 80s and 90s , Gen X women were inundated with images of eternal youthfulness. From magazine covers to Hollywood icons, the message was clear: aging was something to be feared , and grey hair was unwelcome. As we entered the workforce, the pressure to maintain a youthful appearance only intensified. Hair dye became our armor against the passage of time , a shield to protect us from aging. Career and Identity For many Gen X women, our careers are deeply intertwined with our appearance. In industries where youthfulness is prized , the decision to embrace grey hair can feel like a radical act of defiance. Will we be taken seriously in the boardroom with salt-and-pepper hair? Will we be passed over for promotions in favor of our younger counterparts? These are the questions and fears that echo in the minds of so many of us as we contemplate ditching the dye . The Evolution of Beauty Standards Yet, amidst the chaos of societal expectations, a quiet revolution is taking place. With each silver strand that emerges, many Gen X women are reclaiming their narrative , rewriting the script on aging, and challenging ALL the status quo. The beauty standards that once confined us are crumbling, giving way to a more inclusive and authentic definition of beauty. Embracing Change Embracing grey hair isn't just about embracing a new hair color; it's about embracing change in all its forms. It's about embracing the wrinkles that map the journey of our lives, the laughter lines etched around our eyes, and the wisdom that comes with lived experience. It's about embracing the beauty of imperfection and finding strength in vulnerability .   As Gen X women, we stand at the crossroads of tradition and transformation, navigating the delicate balance between societal expectations and personal authenticity . Embracing our natural grey hair is more than just a trend; it's a statement of resilience, a celebration of individuality, and a testament to the beauty of aging. In a world where youthfulness is glorified and aging is often feared, the journey of Generation X (Gen X) women embracing their natural grey hair is a testament to resilience, authenticity, and self-acceptance. Let's explore the stories of three remarkable women who have dared to defy societal norms and embrace their silver strands with pride. Sarah's Journey: Redefining Beauty Standards Sarah, a 48-year-old marketing executive , spent years meticulously dyeing her hair to hide any sign of grey. However, after experiencing a series of personal awakenings and reflecting on the pressure to conform to beauty standards, Sarah made the courageous decision to let her natural grey hair shine through. " It was liberating, " she shares. "I realized that true beauty comes from within, and embracing my natural hair color was a powerful affirmation of my self-worth ."   Maria's Story: Finding Strength in Vulnerability For Maria, a 52-year-old mother of two, the decision to embrace her grey hair was deeply intertwined with her journey of self-discovery and empowerment . "I spent years trying to fit into society's narrow definition of beauty," Maria reflects. "But as I grew older, I realized that my grey hair was a symbol of strength, resilience, and the wisdom that comes with age." Embracing her natural hair color became a catalyst for Maria to reclaim her identity and embrace her authentic self. Jenna's Transformation: Embracing Change Jenna, a 45-year-old entrepreneur , vividly remembers the moment she decided to stop dyeing her hair. "I was tired of constantly trying to hide my grey roots ," she recalls. "I wanted to live authentically and embrace the natural aging process." Although the transition wasn't always easy, Jenna found solace in the support of her friends and family, who cheered her on every step of the way . "Embracing my grey hair was a transformative experience ," she says. "It taught me to embrace change, celebrate imperfection, and find beauty in the journey." A Mindset Shift The journey of Gen X women embracing their natural grey hair is about more than just a change in appearance - it's a profound shift in mindset . It's about challenging societal norms, redefining beauty standards, and embracing the beauty of aging.   So, let us celebrate these women and their courageous decision to break free from the confines of tradition, for they are the pioneers of a new era of authenticity and self-acceptance. And please, don't discourage or deter the people in your life or online who are boldly and bravely embracing their natural hair; they are trying to stand up for change . Do not reflect upon your potential fears surrounding aging and grey hair. And remember so many people are grey at 20 so it isn't even about aging ... but that's a post for another day and first, we face it for women since we are also supporting the pro-aging movement here too! Please don't get in the way of other people's paths and purpose it is a very personal and challenging journey for many and they need support and encouragement . • Want to Feel like a Rebel? 5 Reasons to Grow Out Your Grey Hair

We learn a lot about how we view ourselves and the fears we have associated with going grey and getting older when we decide to embrace the grey .  Ditching the hair dye is a big decision for women. The pressures from society are real, and depending on where you live in the world it can also vary greatly. Why Ditching the Dye will help you tap into your Rebel Energy! Growing out your natural gray hair can boost confidence by embracing your authentic look, but it can be challenging too. The process is quite long and many women find themselves always finding a reason as to why this isn’t quite the right time to ditch the hair dye. There may be a family wedding coming up, a business meeting, or a first date. You can plan all you want, but the timing is never going to be perfect so you have to choose whether or not you are going to go through with it and just do it. I now look back fondly at my transition photos and think how proud I am of her for all that she’s learned. That she went to that event like that! She defined her beauty and owned it. Are you ready to ditch the dye? In This Post... ● Authentic Self-Expression ● A Pro-Ageing Perspective ● Break Free from Expectations ● Celebrating Individuality ● Simplified Beauty Routine Grey Hair Resources ● Recommended Products ● Embracing the Silver Lining ● Jennifer David on Closer Lives 1. Authentic Self-Expression Growing out your natural grey hair is a natural and authentic expression of who you truly are. Embracing your natural beauty, including the silver strands, allows you to present yourself to the world without any pretense, fostering a sense of confidence rooted in genuine self-acceptance. I try to demonstrate this in my Instagram reels by showing all sides of me.  Filtered and not.   2. Embracing Aging with a Pro-Ageing Perspective Choosing to grow out your grey hair signifies a positive embrace of the aging process. It reflects confidence in navigating different life stages, showcasing that you not only accept but celebrate the wisdom, experience, and privilege that comes with age. Learning the differences between pro-aging and anti-aging helps people to be more language-conscious in expressing their perspectives with others. 3. Breaking Free from Societal Expectations Confidence flourishes when you break free from societal expectations. Choosing to let your natural grey hair shine challenges conventional beauty norms, demonstrating a bold self-assurance that refuses to conform to external pressures and standards.  This was the main factor in my decision. I want women to feel freedom through my transition and to normalize grey hair at all ages. I have seen so many women on Instagram embracing their grey hair in their 20s and 30s .  Let’s break the stigmas and normalize aging and silver hair so it no longer has to be a part of the conversation for women. 4. Celebrating Individuality Each silver strand in your natural grey hair is unique , just like you. By allowing your hair to grow out naturally, you celebrate the individuality of your journey and appearance. This unique silver hair patterning contributes to an enhanced sense of what makes you distinct. I thought my hair was going to grow in SO white. My temples are very light but I have a darker upper strip and a lot of dark and salt and pepper hair. I also have larger silver highlighted streaks . It’s fascinating to see all the women with their unique patterning styles. 5. Simplified Beauty Routine, Enhanced Confidence Growing out your natural grey hair often simplifies your beauty routine, freeing you from the constant upkeep of hair coloring. This simplicity not only saves time and money, but it also gives you a look that no other human can have .  I think that’s pretty neat. I feel passionate about normalizing grey hair in society for women of all ages. For that to happen, people need to see women with grey hair of all ages. They also need to hear, know, and learn that it is fully OK TO GO GREY ANY DAY IN ANY WAY , and then the conversation can go away. Where are you on the journey? • Ditch the Dye: 10 Empowering Reasons to Embrace Your Natural Hair Color

10 Advantages and Benefits of Ditching the Hair Dye and letting your natural hair shine! Why I stopped coloring mine at 48 and embraced my gray hair. I chose to step ‘ outside of the box ’ and ditch the hair dye for many reasons but the main two for me would be the constant stress and frustration of the new root growth showing within weeks of coloring. That and the time. The stress and the time.  Isn’t it ironic to see those two words together? Why would we give our time to stress? In This Post... ● Why Do We Color Our Hair? ● 11 Months Grombre ● 10 Advantages and Benefits ● Love Watching Your Hair Grow Grey Hair Resources ● Recommended Products ● Embracing the Silver Lining ● Jennifer David on Closer Lives Why Do We Color Our Hair? We color our hair to feel good about it, and we do, for a few weeks. Then we are worried about the new growth showing again.   Many of us can even be found chopping the top off of our heads in selfies to hide the greys. I know I did! Then you are paying for yet another trip to the salon or buying a new box of dye.  I started to recognize and feel the weight of this cycle, and I decided life had enough things demanding my time, attention, and money. We know life has no problem finding ways to add stress. I wasn’t willing to pay any currency to do this to myself any longer, so I broke the cycle. 11 Months Grombre Now here we are, 11 months into my natural silver hair grow-out journey. It’s been full of doubts and uncertainties, wonders and curiosities. It’s had me questioning my views on aging and learning about positive language and the differences between an anti- and a pro-aging perspective. I am now in the fondly referred to as 'grombre' or 'gray ombre' stage of my growout. The upper quarter or half of my hair is natural, and the lower half is the previously dyed colour.  Some people struggle watching themselves and their hair through the process, but I have quite enjoyed it. I have decided to embrace and celebrate it. I couldn’t be happier that I stuck with it and didn't give in to dye my hair even through the harder days and trust me there are many. 10 Advantages and Benefits of Ditching the Dye and Letting Your Natural Hair Shine! 1. Healthier Hair Hair dyes often contain chemicals that can damage the hair shaft and lead to dryness and breakage. Embracing your natural color allows your hair to grow and maintain its natural health. 2. Reduced Allergic Reactions Some individuals may be allergic to the chemicals present in hair dyes. Going natural eliminates the risk of experiencing allergic reactions or irritations associated with hair dye. 3. Time and Cost Savings Regular hair dyeing sessions can be time-consuming and expensive. By going natural, you save time and money that would otherwise be spent on purchasing hair dye products or visiting the salon. 4. Low Maintenance Natural hair color typically requires less maintenance than dyed hair. You won't have to worry about roots showing or the fading of color, making your hair care routine simpler. 5. Authenticity & Confidence Embracing your natural hair colour allows you to express your authentic self. This can boost your confidence and self-esteem as you embrace and appreciate your unique features. 6. Environmental Impact Hair dye production and application can have environmental consequences due to the chemicals involved. Choosing to go natural reduces the environmental impact associated with the manufacturing and disposal of hair dye products. 7.  Avoiding Chemical Exposure Hair dyes often contain chemicals like ammonia and peroxide. By avoiding these chemicals, you reduce your exposure to potentially harmful substances. 8. Versatility in Styling Natural hair often provides a versatile base for styling. You can experiment with different cuts, textures, and styles without the constraints of maintaining a specific color. 9. Aging Gracefully Embracing your natural hair color as you age can be a graceful and authentic way to navigate the natural process of getting older. It can also be a positive example for others to embrace their aging journey. 10. Cultural or Personal Identity For some individuals, their natural hair color is closely tied to their cultural or personal identity. Embracing and celebrating this can foster a deeper connection with one's heritage or individuality. The decision to ditch the hair dye and go natural is a personal one. When you have grey hair it is also a very different change due to societal pressure. We feel pressure that our perception and reception in society may change. Grey hair isn't for old people. Grey hair is so common in many people in their 20s and 30s. It is a hair colour. Many girls and young women feel pressured into coloring their hair from a young age, often told their hair is flat or mousy. So much of our time, money, and energy is spent in this area of our lives. Love Watching Your Hair Grow I am learning to love and accept my hair as it grows in now. My hair has surprised me and not at all grown in as I had hoped for or even anticipated. It's so interesting to go from dreading the silver and white hairs to quickly wishing you had even more of them! It's a journey of letting go and trusting the process. I love growing and changing along with my hair, and I am so happy that my hair is so long, so I have plenty of time to enjoy this transformation. I feel passionate about normalizing grey hair in society for women of all ages. For that to happen, people need to see women with grey hair of all ages. They also need to hear, know, and learn that it is fully OK TO GO GRAY ANYDAY IN ANY WAY, and then the conversation can go away. Balian Beach, Bali, Indonesia Balian Beach isn't your typical Bali hotspot. Tucked away on the west coast, roughly 2 hours northwest of the Ngurah Rai International Airport, it sits nestled between verdant rice paddies and the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean. You'll find it just north of the small village of Sangguling, at the mouth of the Balian River. This secluded location guarantees a more peaceful and intimate experience compared to the bustling south of Bali. Balian Beach is known as a surfer's paradise, where volcanic ash paints the sand black in places, and powerful waves serenade sun-kissed shores. Imagine hand-in-hand strolls along the secluded coast, watching surfers dance with the ocean before sharing intimate moments under starlit skies. Petra tou Romiou (Aphrodite's Rock), Paphos, Cyprus Steeped in legend and bathed in Mediterranean sunshine, Aphrodite's Rock in Cyprus promises a love story come to life. Picture yourselves hand-in-hand, strolling along the dramatic coastline where, according to myth, the goddess of love herself emerged from the sea foam. Take a dip in the crystal-clear waters believed to grant eternal love, or explore the hidden grotto said to be where Aphrodite met her lover, Adonis. This enchanting spot sits on the Akamas Peninsula, at the westernmost tip of Cyprus, offering breathtaking views of the turquoise Aegean Sea and a secluded escape for your romantic rendezvous. Just beware, the allure of this mythical haven might make you believe in fairy tales again! It certainly did for us, being the spot where we got engaged. We visited back in June 2019, with Jenn coming to the UK for our first road trip around Europe . Leon's family happened to be in Cyprus at the same time, so we dropped by before heading out to France. Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia Ahh, Malaysia's Langkawi. Imagine a tapestry woven from lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and ancient myths - that's Langkawi, a secluded archipelago nestled in the Andaman Sea. We spent two weeks in Langkawi in several places across the island, including the incredible Red Coral Cottage, right on one of the epic beaches here, in the north of the island. We were blown away by how quiet it was, strolling on gorgeous white sand beaches without a soul in sight. This is a place of immense peace and tranquillity, where you can take boat tours among the mangroves that are far more personal and connected than the big tourist traps in neighbouring Thailand . Batumi, Republic of Adjara (in Georgia) Most people think of the U.S state of Georgia when we mention it. Georgia is very much a country of its own, and is in one of those spots that is so Eastern Europe it becomes Western Asia . A strategically important city on the Adjara coast, Batumi is easily accessible by plane, with direct flights from major European cities, or by train for a scenic journey through the Caucasus Mountains. Monument of Ilia Chavchavadze, known as the 'Father of the Nation' in Georgia When we talk about escaping the ordinary, Batumi is a city that does that in some very unique ways. European charm meets Eastern vibes on the cobbled streets, giving a flair to the city that can be as romantic as it can be adventurous. Against a backdrop of stunning mountains, the city has a coastline lined by impressive boardwalks, with monuments and gardens to accompany a fantastic beach, even if it is a pebble one. Some of the best sunsets we have ever seen, almost every day here in Batumi. The skies can be gorgeous here, with sunsets to die for. With the beach covered, heading inland is a real treat with quirky architecture like a skyscraper with a built-in Ferris Wheel and a tower straddled with the unique letters of the Georgian alphabet. Batumi also boasts a youthful energy, with bustling bars and clubs alongside peaceful public squares and spaces, offering something for every romantic whim. All accompanied by a great variety of restaurants, plenty of bars and wine spots (wine is said to have been invented here), and a rather unusually large amount of casinos. San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico San Cristóbal de las Casas, also known by its native Tzotzil name Jovel, is nestled in the Central Highlands region of the Mexican state of Chiapas in Mexico . It sits in a small valley surrounded by hills, offering stunning vistas and a cool mountain climate. This is a town that they say once you venture into, you will not want to leave. Honestly, this is just about as true as anything we ever learned on our travels. Picturesque views in this classic Mexican town of San Cristobal. Simply put, San Cris is where it is at! We spent 3 incredible months here enjoying all it had to offer. The main thoroughfare through the town is the heartbeat of the action, with gorgeous bars and bistros, restaurants and shops, and all the fresh produce you can shake your reusable grocery bag at. In a Spain-esque style, a sleepy and serene street roars into life in the evenings, with street vendors, performers, artists, and musicians springing to action every evening. Couple that with fireworks, epic sunsets, and dry lightning phenomenon, a quirky cool Airbnb , and that very special Mexican cuisine, and San Cristobal will certainly grab your attention. There is so much to see and explore here! We wrote a whole blog about it in the link below, but we will not leave it on that cliff-hanger. Let's leave it on the incredible street art. El Gouna, Hurghada, Egypt El Gouna, also known as the "Venice of the Red Sea," isn't your typical Egyptian experience. This resort town lies along the Red Sea coast in south-eastern Egypt , roughly 25 km north of Hurghada. Instead of sprawling, sandy beaches, El Gouna is a network of lagoons and canals, creating a unique "Little Venice" vibe. That being said, it still has epic beaches too! Imagine strolling hand-in-hand along charming walkways beside turquoise waters, exploring colorful marinas lined with incredible yachts, and enjoying romantic gondola rides under the Egyptian sun. Beyond its aquatic charm, El Gouna offers a diverse range of adventures; snorkel amid vibrant coral reefs, kite-surf on crystal-clear waters (which it is world-renowned for), or explore the nearby desert landscapes by ATV or in a hot air balloon. This secluded haven promises a romantic escape unlike any other in Egypt. El-Gouna is a walled city, which means that only residents, workers, and guests are allowed in. The security is quite welcome, making it feel super safe, even if you never actually see the 'walls'. There are spectacular restaurants here, all types of cuisine, along with a vibrant nightlife. Everything about it impressed us; it is modern yet old, traditional yet different, resort style yet it feels like a city. It kind of has to be seen to be believed, although there is one drawback, in that if you want to go to Luxor, you will need a nearly 20-hour day to do it. Still worth it though! ⪢ Read More: 🔗 Day Trip Tour from El Gouna to Luxor 🔗 ATV Across the Desert with Alex Safari 7. Gundogan, Bodrum, Türkiye Gundogan in Türkiye offers a blissful escape on the Aegean coast, approximately 17 km southwest of Bodrum. This hidden gem sits within the larger Milas district, surrounded by rolling hills, olive groves, and picturesque bays. Unlike its bustling neighbor, Bodrum, Gundogan exudes a tranquil atmosphere, making it ideal for couples seeking a peaceful and romantic getaway. Having come from a month in Istanbul , the slower pace of Gundogan was very welcome. We came here 2 months before the start of its actual 'season', which meant we were able to enjoy that very sleepy feel as the town sprang to life with businesses getting ready. Let us explain; this bay of this town is completely lined with resorts, bars, and restaurants, in between some villas. They ceremoniously shut down outside of peak season, laying out all of the reed rush parasols and furniture, clearing the decks, and leaving the foliage to grow. How cool is this palm tree! We walked past it every day on the Gundogan boardwalk.k As the season starts to draw near, every day something new starts to appear. Our Airbnb was about halfway up the hill around the bay, and it was awesome to take daily walks down it to the boardwalk for exercise and just because. With no one around, it was seriously beautiful! It amazed us really as the temperature was still in the low 20s, which is just about perfect! So, (we digress), as you walk past, it is great to watch the decks being polished, jetties being set up, bushes being cut back, and fresh menu stands making their way onto the path. April to the end of May is the golden spot here. Gundogan has all of the Turkish charm, calls-to-prayer, markets, and traditional restaurants you could want, it has resorts, water sports, sandy beaches, and adventure tours. Not to mention incredible and vibrant flowers that are beautifully grown in most of the gardens of the white-washed houses. Which, by the way, is a rule here in Gundogan! It may always lose out to Bodrum in the popularity stakes, but you know what, it is probably better that way. If you catch our drift! ⪢ Save for Later: 🔗 A Guide to Gündoğan, Bodrum's Best-Kept Secret 8. Arundel, West Sussex, England Located on the River Arun in West Sussex, England , lies the historic town of Arundel. This charming haven, about 80 km south of London, boasts a medieval castle towering over quaint cobbled streets lined with independent shops and traditional pubs. Imagine hand-in-hand strolls along the riverbank, breathing in the fresh air and soaking in the picturesque views of the castle reflected in the water. We could not get enough of this view at Arundel Castle. Arundel Castle, dating back to the 11th century, offers a glimpse into England's past. It also happens to boast one of the finest gardens you will likely find, in particular a spectacular rose garden that we will never forget. Beyond the castle walls, you will find the equally spectacular Arundel Cathedral, known for its Gothic architecture and giant circular stained-glass window. The location of Arundel is also pretty neat if you want to tie in other must-see spots, including Stonehenge and the Roman city of Bath. We did this loop on a weekend, and it makes for a really neat road trip. While Arundel may be well known in England, it is not a name that rolls off the tongue amongst foreigners. You think castle, you think of Windsor, right? Or the Tower of London? Well, we hope that in this clearly-not-enough space to describe this place slot has done enough to convince you to add this to the list. ⪢ Read More: 🔗 Arundel Cathedral: A Magical Piece of British History 🔗 One of England's Finest, the Historic Arundel Castle 🔗 Stonehenge: History, Facts & Things to Know 9. Whitby, North Yorkshire, England Whitby, set on the North Yorkshire coast where the River Esk meets the North Sea, offers a unique blend of romantic charm, historical intrigue, and natural beauty. This ancient seaside town, roughly 200 miles north of London, is steeped in history. Its East Cliff is dominated by the imposing ruins of Whitby Abbey, a 7th-century monastery famously linked to Bram Stoker's Dracula. Make no mistake, we have been to copious amounts of ruined sites around the world, and this is the ONE to see. The magnificent Whitby Abbey. Even in ruins, it is still imperious! Just the whole experience here is like a whimsical story. From the moment we stepped off the traditional steam train from Pickering, yes, steam train, the town of Whitby was everything we imagined England would have been like back in the day. As a fishing town, there are old nets and crates everywhere, fishing and sail boats in the harbour, old stores with the weather-worn oak beams on the outside, and old stone-built buildings still standing strong after hundreds of years. St Mary's Church Walking towards the sea brings you to 109 steps, which lead to a wonderful old church with one of the most incredible views of any cemetery we have ever come across. The view from up there is one of a kind, even before one gets to the Whitby Abbey ruins themselves, set against a deep blue sky like a painting out of the Louvre. Then package that all together with Dracula and Bram Stoker, fish and chips, old English pubs, sandy beaches, clifftop trails, and the surrounding Yorkshire Moors National Park. At risk of blabbering on like an ad for Whitby, we shall leave it there! ⪢ Read More: 🔗 Whitby Abbey & Dracula's Birthplace 10. Sacre Coeur, Paris, France The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, France , commonly known as Sacré-Coeur Basilica and often simply Sacré-Coeur, is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica in Paris dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is located at the summit of the butte Montmartre, at an altitude of 130 meters (427 feet). The views of Paris from here are phenomenal. From this elevated perch, the Sacré-Coeur offers spectacular panoramic views of the entire city of Paris. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. This breathtaking view, combined with the basilica's stunning architecture, makes it a popular tourist destination. Not just for tourists, it also made it a rather beautiful spot for an evening celebrating our engagement, which we made formal in Cyprus the week prior. We were here literally a few days after, and it was a fitting spot. A place that is as alive during the night as it is during the day. As is Paris itself, of course! Not sure what was going on here, but it was a blast! Okay, so we admit, you will probably find Paris in practically every guide you will ever see about romantic destinations. Most likely in the top two or something, too. So sorry not sorry about that, but here we are. We have no excuses haha! Seriously though, we need not mention all of the other Paris stuff, Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Catacombs, Arc de Triomphe, so on and so on... 11. Isla de Pasion, Cozumel, Mexico Everything about this place fits in with wanderlust and romance. Like a glove! Situated approximately 10 minutes by boat from Cozumel's main shore in Mexico , Isla de Pasion sits on the Caribbean Sea, offering secluded vibes and crystal-clear waters. This private island boasts powdery white sand beaches, fringed by palm trees and lapped by turquoise waters. We had the beach and the docks to ourselves! To get there, you can take an ATV through the main central area of Cozumel, on the only road out of town that goes past the main island resorts before drifting off towards the isolated pier where boats ferry those who find them to the island. Quite literally, you drive off the road onto a dirt path, dodging potholes and overhanging foliage all the way, before parking up in a clearing by a dock that has seen better days. After negotiating with the almost-no-English boat driver on price, we took a three-hour return and went off to enjoy this paradise island that would not look out of place in a Maldives brochure. It is a little bit of a nervous moment waiting for the boat to return, unnecessary, but still. Anyway, we got picked up, albeit a little late, and here we are telling you to do the same thing . Go here. You won't regret it. ⪢ Find Out More: 🔗 Isla de la Pasion: The Secluded Island Paradise 12. Hoi An, Vietnam Hoi An in Vietnam is a captivating town renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage status and its captivating blend of history, culture, and charm. Located approximately 30 kilometers south of Da Nang city and situated beside the picturesque Thu Bon River, Hoi An offers a unique experience that is as romantic as it is cultural and, dare we say it, even spiritual. Stepping into Hoi An's ancient town feels like stepping back in time. Its well-preserved streets, lined with lantern-adorned yellow shophouses dating back to the 15th-19th centuries, exude a magical atmosphere. Its thriving market is the heartbeat of the place, covering most of the riverside streets with just about everything you can think of. The smells were beautiful too, no durian in sight (if you do not know Durian fruit, you will when you come to Asia), just warm incense and kind smiles to accompany them. This show happens every night at Hoi An Memories Theme Park. As the sun sets, the transformation in the town gets underway, with more lanterns than you can imagine on just about every tree and every store. This town has been a trading hub for so long, it has blended and frozen cultures from all over Asia . It tells this story in a mesmerizing show called Hoi An Memories, located on an island on the river. Add this experience to gorgeous local cafes and restaurants, friendly locals, and the monthly lantern festival, lighting candles on the river, and you have a place of romance and wanderlust. Period! A shop at Mulberry Silk Village. A big shout out to the incredible Mulberry Silk Village in Hoi An , where we stayed too. We are yet to write about this incredible experience on our blog, but it will be coming soon! This fabulous hotel includes a silk workshop with traditional techniques and hand-sewn clothing. Not to mention exquisite cuisine and several pools to enjoy and relax in. ⪢ Save for Later: 🔗 Magic in the Moonlight: Hoi An Night Market 13. Singapore Singapore , a sovereign island city-state in Southeast Asia, is a vibrant metropolis known for its futuristic skyline, colonial architecture, and diverse cultural tapestry. Sitting at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore is separated from Malaysia by the Johor Strait and Indonesia by the Singapore Strait. Its compact size, measuring just 728 square kilometers, makes it easily explorable on foot or by its efficient public transportation system. Singapore's unique character stems from its multicultural population, comprising Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Eurasian communities. This blend is reflected in its languages, religions, cuisine, and architecture, creating a truly fascinating experience for visitors. The Garden Rhapsody Light and Sound Show. Perhaps most famous for its iconic Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands, this futuristic city has plenty to romanticize about. If you do not know about these two places, you will see them featured just about anywhere Singapore is mentioned. But while this garden paradise, complete with the famous Supertree Grove and Cloud Forest Dome, is great during the day, at night it becomes a free light show beneath the trees and stars. Marina Bay Sands as seen from Gardens by the Bay. Meanwhile, Marina Bay Sands, which affords you a rooftop view with breathtaking views of the bay, becomes a shopping haven throughfare to the electric Spectra Light and Water Show, also free at night. Then, of course, there is probably the best Chinatown in all of Southeast Asia, with its epic Hawker Center complete with the world's first hawker Michelin Star, Hawker Chan. Oh, and then there is Little India, local islands to explore, a vibrant nightlife, and everything without the need for a car. Oh, and the incredible world-famous Jewel at Changi Airport (which by the way is one of the best airports in the world). Sold on Singapore yet? Chiang Rai, Thailand Chiang Rai, located in the mountainous northern region of Thailand , is a city brimming with cultural charm, natural beauty, and unique experiences. Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbor, Chiang Mai , Chiang Rai offers a more relaxed and authentic Thai experience, perfect for those seeking to delve deeper into the country's rich heritage and stunning landscapes. The Blue Temple, aka Wat Rong Suea Ten. As with most Thai cities, Chiang Rai is brimming with temples, amongst them some of the most famous in the country itself. The White Temple and the Blue Temple are indeed worthy of that title, which is saying something given there are over 40,000 across the land of smiles. The best part about here, however, was not so much the inner city, but more about the outskirts, where we found a fantastic Airbnb. At the time, we were renting a car and had a permanent stay in Chiang Mai. So we came up to the Rai via the only highway, which happens to be windy and mountainous and very nice, to stay in a 'dome', overlooking a delightful mountain valley with a bathtub on its balcony. Style Paidoi Resort is one of those that speaks for itself, and goes hand in hand with the romance, of course! We will get around to writing about it one day, but for now, you are just gonna have to trust us, and in the meantime, check out the sister temples and the very odd, and almost concerning Baan Dam Museum below. ⪢ Top Destinations in Chiang Rai: 🔗 Black House Museum 🔗 The Blue Temple Chiang Rai 🔗 The White Temple in Chiang Rai 15. Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada Last on the list but by no means the least, Niagara Falls is a group of three waterfalls at the southern end of Niagara Gorge, spanning the border between the province of Ontario in Canada and the state of New York in the United States. The largest of the three is Horseshoe Falls, which straddles the international border of the two countries. It is also known as the Canadian Falls, and this is the one we visited. Twice, and for Jenn (as a Canadian from Toronto), many more on top of that! If you are looking for a romantic stroll, it doesn't get much better than Niagara Falls at night. Niagara Falls is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and for good reason. The falls are truly awe-inspiring, with a total height of 167 feet (51 m) and a width of 3,419 feet (1,043 m). The water flow rate is an average of 6,000 cubic meters per second (212,000 cubic feet per second), although this can vary depending on the time of year and weather conditions. It is a truly spectacular sight to witness, especially from the top of the falls or at night with the mesmerizing fireworks and light show. There are many different ways to experience Niagara Falls, from taking a boat ride to the bottom of the falls to walking behind them. As mentioned earlier, you can also take a boardwalk right up to the top, and you can even take a zip line back down to the bottom during the day or at night. There is so much to do here, including go-karts and 5D theatres. There are a ton of other activities around the falls, too, including amusements, museums, bars, restaurants, and resorts. There is something truly magical about Niagara Falls, and the energy here is powerful. Incredibly, it seems to be avoided on many a list out there, but trust us, it is worth it. And a fitting place to end this not-in-any-particular-order list! ⪢ All You Need to Know: 🔗 Niagara Falls in Canada Zip-lining down the falls at night has to be one of our best experiences! • Safety First: 6 Top Recommendations for Airbnb Guests

Considering an Airbnb for your upcoming getaway could be a wise economic choice. Yet, it's important to note that they may not offer the level of security found in hotels. As such, when arranging your Airbnb accommodations, it's crucial to conduct thorough research and take several precautions before finalizing your reservation. From scrutinizing your host's reputation through past guest reviews to assessing the safety of the local area and inspecting the rental for hidden surveillance devices, this guide outlines vital tips to safeguard your well-being throughout your journey. In This Post... ● Airbnb Safety Tips ● Reviews and Rating - Basics ● Check for Cameras ● Read Airbnb Host Profiles ● Make Sure the Host Is Responsive See More... ● Don't Leave Airbnb to Pay ● Store Your Valuables Safely ● Conclusion ● Our Lifestyle Blog Airbnb Safety Tips Image source :   pexels.com First, I would like to clarify how reliable Airbnb is. When you ask, Is Airbnb safe , what are you comparing it to? If we are talking about property sharing, then Airbnb is much safer. Compared to hotels, the level of security is much lower. We won't delve into Airbnb's security technologies; for that, you can visit the VeePN website. From the article, you can learn about Airbnb safety concerns and options for improving safety. We'll focus on what can be done to improve security when using Airbnb. 1. Reviews and Rating - Basics When it comes to ensuring safety with Airbnb accommodations, paying attention to guest reviews is paramount. Before making a booking, it's essential to peruse the reviews—doing otherwise is not advisable. After finding a visually and statistically appealing listing, the next step is to dive into individual guest reviews. Reviews are incredibly telling; they're personal accounts of previous guests' experiences. Negative experiences, in particular, tend to prompt guests to share their concerns, offering future guests valuable insights. 2. Check for Cameras You can ask the host directly about the presence of security cameras for complete transparency. Despite the prohibition of concealment devices, conducting a sweep of the accommodations for cameras is a good practice to maintain privacy. Platforms like Airbnb strictly forbid the use of hidden cameras  and any recording equipment. Hosts are obligated to inform about any such devices on the premises. Specifically, recording is not allowed in private areas such as bedrooms and bathrooms; however, it may be present in shared spaces. Surveillance devices must not be installed inside rental properties, although exterior cameras are permitted with full disclosure to guests. Nevertheless, there have been incidents reported in the media where travelers found undisclosed cameras in their rented spaces. 3. Read Airbnb Host Profiles To enhance your safety during your stay, it's recommended to thoroughly review the profiles of Airbnb hosts. A well-crafted host profile is often an indicator of a reliable and attentive Airbnb host. A comprehensive profile typically includes a detailed personal description. Hosts who invest time in sharing information about themselves are likely to demonstrate a commitment to providing a positive guest experience. Moreover, pay attention to the verification information a host has submitted to Airbnb. At a basic level, look for confirmed contact details such as a government-issued ID, a verified phone number, and an email address. 4. Make Sure the Host Is Responsive It's critical to select an attentive host for a worry-free experience. Should any problems arise or if you encounter an emergency, you'll appreciate a host who can return your communication promptly, ideally within a day. Imagine being locked out of your accommodation with no timely support – it’s a scenario best avoided. Before booking, sift through the reviews focusing on the host's communication score. A high rating in this area is reassuring. Initiate a conversation with your potential host ahead of your visit to gauge their responsiveness. If you encounter a lack of responsiveness or unsettling inquiries, consider it a red flag. It's advisable to cancel and seek another place rather than risk a potentially unsafe circumstance upon arrival. 5. Don't Leave Airbnb to Pay Image source :   pexels.com Ensuring safety on Airbnb revolves significantly around secure payments within the platform. Wondering what that entails? Let's take a moment to address a common query that I, as an Airbnb host, often encounter. Many guests propose the idea of bypassing the Airbnb platform for direct cash transactions when booking. On the surface, this might appear beneficial. Guests and hosts could potentially save on the service fees charged by Airbnb. For instance, a week's accommodation priced at $2,000 on the platform might be reduced to $1,600 if the service fees are eliminated. That's an enticing saving, right? However, it's essential to reconsider. Operating outside Airbnb's system is not a wise choice. It’s better to already install a VPN on iOS  and try to save on housing by changing the region. This way, you will be protected by Airbnb and save money. 6. Store Your Valuables Safely You should check whether their accommodations include a secure safe for storing valuables. Essential items such as passports, electronic devices, and jewelry should be placed in the most secure location available, and some rental properties offer safe storage solutions. In certain cases, it might be necessary to supply your own padlock, which adds a layer of security since only you will have access to the combination. You can use portable safes  as an alternative for safeguarding possessions during travel. These safes typically consist of a fabric outer layer integrated with wire mesh and are secured with a braided steel cable, effectively deterring thieves unless they possess bolt cutters. The Pacsafe brand is one of the best in the field for its range of anti-theft products, including portable safes. Conclusion Airbnb accommodations offer an affordable alternative for lodging during travel. Yet, unlike hotels, they may lack standardized security protocols. To ensure a secure and enjoyable stay, it's essential to conduct thorough research before finalizing your Airbnb reservation. Pay close attention to the host's review history, assess the safety of the local area, and be vigilant for the presence of undisclosed surveillance devices within the property. Above, you will find a checklist of crucial considerations that will help safeguard your well-being while you're away from home. • UAP/UFO Sighting Video: What We Saw & Why It Left Us Questioning Everything

Before recording the video you will see later in this post, Jenn and I stood hand-in-hand and mesmerized under the spotlight of a street lamp, in the middle of a bend in the road at night. We had just walked out of an alleyway in Bedford, England , an impromptu evening walk after a great evening spent with our neighbors and friends. As we turned to go back home, what we saw was something we will NEVER forget. Before choosing this as our path, we had walked in the opposite direction but it was exceptionally blustery and it put us off... as if the wind was blowing against us. We decided to walk down an alley a few blocks back in the opposite direction. As we went down the dimly lit alley, we had a brief discussion about Jenn leaving her phone at home. 'Going for a walk, why would I need it?' Jenn said. At that point, Leon remarked how he always carries his phone, just in case. For emergencies, for random things, he might see. Jenn agreed, and how apt that conversation was, just moments before our encounter. Just before leaving the alleyway into the clearing, Jenn said we should 'turn in the spotlight' and head back. So we did, and as we turned, we saw what we can only describe as a bright orange ball of light. Like the orange of the old street lamps before they replaced them with LED. Imagine that and then amplify it about fivefold. This light made no noise and hovered in the distance at the same height as the ridge of the rooflines of the houses you see past the lamp. We stood there almost static and awestruck as this light ghosted from left to right across the street. It was roughly 20ft away. Stretch your arm out upwards, point your finger, and imagine a fifty-pence piece at the end of it. That was how big it was. It moved slowly and had a circular shape to its right / front. From the back was an almost flat vertical line separating the spectacular orange glow from what looked like a grayish sphere emanating like a tail. It was completely noiseless and was nothing like any drone we have even imagined, let alone seen. As we watched, amazed, it almost looked like it turned, came towards us, then moved back, and continued to the left across to where the alleyway was behind us. At that point, Jenn jolted us out of our almost trance-like state and said to record it. So I grabbed my phone, although invariably by this point it was starting to move upwards, getting faster and faster. It was now moving rapidly away from us into the night sky towards the stars. Jenn went to follow it down the alley as I recorded. Then, as quickly as it came, it was gone. This was certainly no floating lantern; the movement, size, and appearance as I zoomed in demonstrate that. As far as we are aware, drones have discernible lights and noise, and it had none of those elements either. There are many things we were feeling after what we saw; awe, amazement, excitement, and wonder. The way it approached us, the way we stood stunned, the way it zipped up into the night sky after its slow hover, it is something we cannot explain. Watch on YouTube We have both watched an absolute ton of documentaries about UFOs, studied ancient alien theories, consumed many shows about conspiracies, and studied numerous religions and civilizations and their connections to flying objects in the sky. If this were man-made, it is certainly nothing like we have ever seen. Check out the video below and see what you think. Obviously, in hindsight, we wish we had pulled the phone out earlier! It is really funny as Leon records everything all of the time, being an avid photographer, but seeing this was a real shock and it did not even cross our minds until Jenn snapped us out of it. We have read about many accounts like this. The paralysis is real! The photos you see below were taken at 100x zoom, at a distance way closer than the moon. Just for context, I filmed this on my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. For those that do not know, the camera has 100x zoom, powerful enough to snap a shot of the moon in incredible detail: This UAP / UFO was MUCH closer than the moon, of course. So much so that we would have fully expected my phone to pick up a more detailed image! Furthermore, we celebrated New Year's in Thailand a month later by releasing lanterns into the sky, a traditional activity in the Land of Smiles. When we originally told people about our encounter, many suggested that it could have been a lantern. So this was a great opportunity to take a shot of one in the sky and compare the footage. Leon took this shot at a much further distance than the photo of the UAP. The night conditions were virtually the same, too; it was a clear night sky. As you can see, the lantern is easy to make out (albeit a little blurry). This is most certainly not what we saw. Just for good measure, this was a video of releasing the lantern: On a final note, we have to mention that only days earlier, we had been discussing aliens and UFOs, something Leon has believed in his entire life. We have had so many debates and discussions about this and Leon kept talking about how desperate he was to see something... anything. Jenn said in this discussion 'Well, okay universe, Leon wants to see one, I want to see one, just do it already!' Two days later, this happened! We do not believe in coincidences, and we know for sure that we are being guided, that we are manifesting all the time, and that our connection to the universe is strong. The whole series of events, from being pushed back by a crazy wind, to our discussion about Jenn not having her phone in the alley, from Jenn pointing towards the spotlight at the end of the alley and wanting to turn back, to then seeing this hovering ball of light. It did feel like we were meant to see this. This happened on October 15th, 2022, at 20:20, in Shortstown, Bedford, England. We felt compelled to come forward after watching The Lost Century by Steven Greer, who also made the documentary Unacknowledged, and is the founder of the CE5 program. (We would recommend you check them out). We had a debrief in our back garden when we got back, admittedly super excited and still pretty shocked at what had transpired. Our home was only a few minutes walk away from the spot we saw the UFO up close, and the direction as it flew away was directly above our home. As Leon looked up again at the sky, he swore he saw a distinctive light again, almost like a short, sharp shooting star; perhaps this was the final push out of the atmosphere. Either way, be it a ball of energy, an orb, a man-made technology, or a UFO, we do feel like we are not alone in this magnificent universe. Now more than ever. Our Lifestyle Blog Since deciding to sell our houses, let go of 90% of our possessions, pack up our remaining things, and head for the airport, we have learned a lot. We mean A LOT! • The Power of Purpose and Intention: Living Life with Meaning and Direction

There is such importance and power behind a name. I recall talking with my ex-mother-in-law (a strong Christian) while I was pregnant with her first grandchild, and she asked me what name I was planning to choose. She discussed with me the gift and power of intention in a name... I love the lessons and wisdom that come from older generations than our own (yes, even that from an ex-mother-in-law). So, long story short, I named her grandchildren Noah, Eden & Adam. Both a gift to her and my children. In This Post... ● What Does Jennifer Mean? ● Names in Ancient Cultures ● The Power of the Universe ● The Lady in Black ● Balance Between Life & Dark ● About Jennifer David ● Our Lifestyle Blog What Does Jennifer Mean? Jennifer: My name essentially means “white fairy” or “white phantom” and has origins dating back to Roman Britain, perhaps even to pagan goddesses. Jennifer comes from a Cornish form of the Welsh name Gwenhwyfar. “Jennifer” itself is Cornish for “white wave” or “white shadow”. “Gwenhwyfar,” as it turns out, is derived from the elements gwen meaning ‘fair, white, blessed’ and sebara meaning ‘phantom, magical being.’ Interesting side note: I have been seriously considering allowing my natural hair to grow in. I have been coloring and hiding my new growth of grey, white, and SILVER; literal SILVER hair, for years. It's going to be a long process, but I am in it to win it. When I saw the photos below of Annika von Holdt with her beautiful natural hair, I was convinced that this is the path for me, too. Am I the only one getting total MARVEL vibes here....channeling energy from your hands with white and silver hair!? Names in Ancient Cultures In ancient cultures and tribes all over the world, they used to introduce themselves fully. Why do we no longer say ‘I’m Jennifer, pure of heart, a white enchantress’? It sounds WAY cooler and far more memorable! And if you don’t identify with your birth name any longer, change it and find something that resonates with the new you... Trust me, I’m a Scorpio. I’ve lived many lives in this one already... we are the transformers! Take a name in your spiritual transformation process (but do remember there is a key and relevance in your birth namesake in your spiritual journey). The Power of the Universe After asking the universe (manifesting, calling it into being) for a deep, real conversation about the things I’m passionate about with a stranger, I recently met a fascinating man while we were in Patong, Phuket, for Songkran, the WATER PARTY of the year and the Buddhist New Year in Thailand! When I returned from the washroom Leon was discussing ChatGPT with him and he hadn't tried it out... the first question he asked was 'Explain to me Athenian Democracy' and that says it all. He was a fellow Canadian at that, I rarely have met Canadians in my travels and/or fellow funeral directors (which I ALSO met here at this exact restaurant the day before, but that's a story for another time). He is a backpacker in his late 50s... a world traveler, writer, extremely spiritual & knowledgeable likes to dissect society, technology, politics, space, and quantum, and discuss ‘conspiracy theories’... he knew his ‘stuff’ (the ‘stuff’ that matters to me) he ‘spoke’ my language. All joking aside, I do speak 4 languages! When I finally got around to asking his name (often in travels we just get talking naturally and casually and introductions tend to fall to the wayside) he said ‘Well, I go by Dallas...’ I thought that was an odd way to put it, and it felt impersonal to me. I like to know the depths of people (I'm a Scorpio, we don't do surface level), and his statement felt lingering to me, so following my intuition, I said, “Yes, but what is your ‘birth/real name’?” (which I wouldn’t normally ask!) He said, ‘You know, it’s been so long since I’ve used it I can’t even bring myself to say it out loud...’ and he didn’t say it... But I could tell he thought/felt deeply about it... and I KNOW, as a healer, that was a takeaway for him. A call to heal his namesake wounds... often in lineage/generational patterns and childhood trauma wounds, etc. There’s no escaping the inner works when they come calling for you... And they will at some point in your journey. The Lady in Black The other fascinating thing I find about my name is that, oddly, I have many times in my life been referred to by strangers as ‘the lady in black’. Maybe it's due to the sense of mystery or allure my energy sends out. I remember when Leon and I stayed in Merida, Mexico, in June 2021 at an old Mansion, and the host kept calling me Lady in Black all weekend... for example, he brought a bottle of wine to our room and said, " You're welcome, Lady in Black." That was the weekend that Leon read aloud to me all over the grounds from the Book of Osiris written by a clairaudient that I had found a few days prior at the local bookstore. I paid 60 pesos for it and it is valued at USD 450 (I love books, however, I am no collector, etc, quite the opposite actually, since it's difficult to travel with tangible books). The book was a blessing to me in so many ways! Again, a story for another day. The Balance Between Life and Dark I’m a Scorpio and my color is black, and I have an affinity for the tone... It’s my clothing color of choice, but my namesake is all about the white... maybe it's the balance between light and dark? White and Black? The yin and yang? Who knows, but what I do know is that there is true power and gifting that is attached to words and names. Writing prompt: What does your name mean? Compose an essay or write a poem about your name... your namesake... anything that comes to you associated with your name... have you noticed any generational patterns, etc. Learn about you! • A Romantic Love Story of Two Poets: When Words Lead to Forever

It started with a poem. Not one written for each other, but two lives quietly unfolding on separate sides of the world, linked by shared words and quiet admiration. Jenn and I met on Instagram—two poets writing through grief, growth, and longing. What began as mutual appreciation for each other’s work soon became something more: late-night conversations, voice notes filled with vulnerability, and eventually a leap of faith that changed everything. This is our love story—not a fairy tale, but something even better. A real connection born from words, nurtured across oceans, and carried through airports, bus rides, and border crossings ever since. Here is a short overview of our journey, starting from heartbreak, leading to a remarkable adventure spanning continents, and eventually transitioning to a lifestyle of full-time slow travel around the globe! We were both recovering heartbroken poets on Instagram (cliché we know, but it's true) in Feb 2019, where we met and found a fairy-tale of a relationship. It's funny how the universe likes to do these things right!? Jenn was living in Canada , and Leon was living in England . We've shared our physical meeting for the first time in Australia for a Royal Caribbean cruise and our story from there with our followers, fans and friends on Instagram. It was a pretty natural and unintentional thing for us to do really, especially after both being quite active members of the poetry community on Instagram before us connecting. Our very first selfie in Sydney, Australia, on the Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas. We read poetry LIVE on Instagram and had a community poetry platform page where we featured and shared others' work for years. We only recently stopped this when our full-time travels began, as it was too much to manage with our new endeavors. We got engaged at Aphrodite's Rock in Cyprus after four months and a previous one-month-long date (imagine a first date lasting one month and covering 5 countries, needless to say, we got to know each other QUITE well!). Travel has always been a part of our journey; Leon moved to Canada with me in September 2019. Thankfully, we were able to be together throughout the ongoing of 2020; something we are ever grateful for as so many couples were unable to see one another or be together during that difficult time. In January 2021, we decided to make some more major life changes. Changing not only our lifestyle but also our careers. We sold, donated, and stored all of our possessions and rented out our property to head out for the digital nomadic lifestyle. Go big or go home, right?! It's kind of how we do things… It's like our motto.... our entire relationship required so much trust and faith in both one another and the universe. A life lived boldly and bravely will indeed be one to be remembered... so here we are, 6 years later, with 42 countries together under our belts... • Full-Time Travel: 5 Essential Things to Know Before You Hit the Road

The decision to embark on the life-changing journey to explore and travel the world full-time is a big one... While we can list thousands of reasons why you should do so, we feel that it's important to also highlight the lesser talked about and more challenging aspects of this lifestyle choice , to help you be better equipped. These are our 5 top things to remember before you travel full-time... if you have any other suggestions, please drop them in the comments below! In This Post... 1. Full-Time Travel IS a Job 2. Relationships and Connections 3. Funding Your Travels 4. Letting go of Creature Comforts 5. Travel Alone or With Someone? ● FAQ: Full-Time Travel 1. Full-Time Travel IS a Job The colorful umbrellas at Balat Cafe in Istanbul So much goes into planning travels, especially if you are operating on a budget. So much research goes into finding adequate accommodations, places to stay, how to use the transportation systems, what neighborhood is ideal for you to stay in, and whether it meets your monthly budget. Travel by air or train requires using different systems in different languages. Visa costs and length of stay. Finding excursions and affordable food and restaurant costs. Changing costs of living are dependent upon the country. Learning about the cultural customs of the country you are visiting. And… then we do it all again the next month! 2. The Relationships & Connections You Lose May Surprise You (However, There Are More to Gain!) Be wise with your money. Many people will not understand your need or choice to travel the world. You may be surprised by the people you lose as you travel, but remember people can’t help but operate from a self-perspective. If they couldn’t imagine it or think it’s risky or selfish, that is about them, not you. People will miss you and what you bring to their lives. People may say that they will keep in touch, but you may see the video calls become further apart. Time zone differences, busy schedules, and the like can impact things. When you do return home after years or months of travel, you may feel that you no longer fit in, or better yet, that you no longer want to. 3. Make Sure You Can Fund Your Travels NOW Missing our creature comforts of home Social media will lead you to believe that it’s as simple as selling your belongings and hitting the road! With a few steps of setting up a blog, filming a YouTube video , and creating a drop shipping company, you can fund your travels. While these are great options and possibilities, like most things, it takes time and dedication towards things for them to grow and prosper. We suggest that you have a solid financial plan that is stable before considering full-time travel… while we fully believe in leap first and that the universe must respond, we still think practicality is a good complement to this! 4. Can You Let Go of Your Creature Comforts? Jennifer David: A Broad Perspective This one, we think most people assume they can do no problem, and then get surprised by the ebbs and flows of how this comes into play when traveling full-time. Living out of one suitcase (full seasonal wardrobes) is quite the challenge. Especially if you plan to film videos and take many photos …you’ll be wearing much of the same clothing throughout (unless you plan to shop and change often, which is a possibility, but also another expense to keep in mind). It’s really difficult to get things shipped or delivered when you are moving frequently. Many countries' postal systems are not up to par, so it can be very difficult to receive care packages or even online shopping. Snacks and foods you love from home will be missed. Trust us when we say Doritos DO NOT taste the same throughout the world, nor do most of the major fast food chains that you were hoping to have a bite at for a small taste of home. 5. Can You Be Alone or Full-Time Together With Your Travel Person? Spending a lot of time alone or with another person while traveling can easily lead to depression and anxiety, both from loneliness and co-dependency. When traveling solo, you need to remember that you may not speak the language, so communication and friendships can become very difficult. If you fall ill, you won’t have a support system with you. When traveling with a partner, you spend 24/7 together during high-stress times, and it’s not always easy to remain amicable when you are exhausted from travel or trying to overcome an obstacle or language barrier. It’s important to be very mindful of your mental health. Adequate sleep, diet, exercise, and listening to your body are very important. These points are not meant to discourage you from traveling. We believe it is of high importance and value to see as much of the world as possible in whatever way possible! However, like most things in life, there are good and bad sides to everything. Be Bold. Be Brave. Do the thing…(with wisdom) Follow along on our journey on YouTube. Have you been considering leaving it all behind to travel full-time? Let us know in the comments! FAQ: Full-Time Travel – What You Should Know Before Going All In Do I need to save a lot of money before starting full-time travel? Having savings helps, but you don’t need to be rich. Many full-time travelers start with a modest cushion and fund their journey through remote work, freelancing, house sitting, teaching English, or seasonal jobs. Planning and flexibility are key. Is it lonely being on the road all the time? It can be at times, but you’ll also meet people constantly, especially if you stay in hostels, join tours, or connect with online travel communities. The key is balancing solo time with social time and finding places where you feel a sense of belonging. How do you deal with healthcare and travel insurance? Long-term travelers usually buy global health or travel insurance like SafetyWing or World Nomads. Some countries also offer short-term local insurance for digital nomads or expats. It’s important to research coverage by region, especially for high-risk destinations or activities. What’s the biggest challenge of full-time travel? It’s not always picture-perfect. The biggest challenges are visa logistics, burnout, income stream maintenance, and finding stable Wi-Fi. You’ll also need to let go of routines and be open to frequent change. How do you pick where to go next? It depends on your budget, visa access, weather preferences, and personal interests. Many travelers follow a mix of slow travel (spending weeks/months in one place) and spontaneous side trips. Flexibility is one of full-time travel’s biggest perks. • Stress-Free Visa Extensions: Why Central Chiangmai Beats the Airport for Foreigners

With its temples, mountain scenery, and vibrant night markets, Chiang Mai is one of Thailand’s most popular destinations, and it’s common for travelers to extend their stays. Extending your visa in Chiang Mai used to primarily mean a trip to the airport’s immigration office. However, many visitors don’t know that a second, far more convenient option is available: Central Festival Mall Chiangmai. We have extended several times, both at the airport and Central Festival Mall. We think the mall is the best way to go for a faster (by Thai standards) and easier experience. This blog will guide you through the process, requirements, and tips for extending your visa in Chiang Mai’s Festival Mall, saving time and simplifying your stay in this beautiful city. Central Festival is owned by Central Pattana (CPN), Thailand's largest shopping mall developer. In This Post... ● Introduction ● Why Central Festival Mall? ● Airport vs. Central Festival Mall ● Visa Extension Requirements ● Guide to Extending Your Visa See More... ● Visa Extension Denials ● FAQs ● Tips ● Final Thoughts Travel Resources & Offers ● Book Transport in Advance ● Easily Find Hotels in Chiang Mai ● FREE Interactive Map of Thailand ● Book Thailand Tours with Klook ● Closer Lives Travel Hub Please note that some of the links in this post are affiliate links. Visa extensions are common in Chiang Mai, especially for tourists who fall in love with the city’s laid-back lifestyle and want to explore more of Northern Thailand. Whether you’re extending a Tourist Visa or a Visa-on-Arrival, Thailand's visa extension process for eligible visitors can often seem a little chaotic. Many travelers are familiar with the airport immigration office as a default option for visa extensions, but Festival Mall presents a lesser-known alternative that’s more convenient, in many cases faster, and also with the option of chilling at the mall while you wait. CONTENT MENU Why Central Festival Mall is a Convenient Alternative for Visa Extensions Central Festival Chiangmai's immigration office is gaining popularity among visitors for its accessible location, easy parking, and more streamlined experience. Located on the 2nd floor of the shopping complex, the immigration office provides easy access to services, dining, and activities that make the wait more comfortable. You are also able to park directly outside the office on parking level 2. Instead of navigating the airport’s high traffic and disjointed offices, Central Festival Mall gives you more of a relaxed, spacious environment with plenty to do while waiting for your visa extension to be processed. CONTENT MENU Comparison – Airport vs. Festival Mall for Visa Extensions ⪢ Benefits of the Central Festival Chiangmai option 1. Less Traffic: With fewer people aware of this option, wait times are typically shorter. 2. Convenient Location: Situated just outside of Chiang Mai centre, Festival Mall is a convenient stop for most tourists. It is right on the main CM highway and has ample parking, which is free to use. 3. Amenities and Entertainment: The mall setting allows you to enjoy coffee shops, shopping, and rest areas while waiting. 4. Streamlined Process: Changes have been made in recent times to improve the process, which involves a 'screening' option, which checks documents to ensure everything is as it should be for the immigration officers. Many people come with missing paperwork (more on that later), so this has made a huge difference. ⪢ Disadvantages of the Chiang Mai Airport Option 1. High Traffic: The airport often sees higher foot traffic, leading to longer queues. The process is also fairly disjointed, with the need to visit several different offices. There is also a distinct lack of indoor waiting space, which means you are queuing up outside for the most part. 2. Limited Amenities: Unlike Festival Mall, the airport offers fewer comfort options for those waiting. You will not find any refreshment or food options at the immigration area, which is not ideal if you are due for a long wait and do not have a car. 3. Distance: For those staying in central Chiang Mai, reaching the airport alone can take additional time. Traffic is typically pretty hectic at peak hours, and can easily add an hour or two to your journey. CONTENT MENU Visa Extension Requirements for Festival Mall Familiarizing yourself with the main requirements for a visa extension will help streamline your visit and prevent potential issues. ⪢ Key Visa Extension Requirements 1. Valid Passport: Ensure your passport has at least six months of validity. 2. Completed Application Forms: Fill out the visa extension forms accurately to avoid delays. 3. Passport Photo: A recent photo meeting Thailand’s passport standards (4x6 cm with a light background). ⪢ Photo Requirements Thailand requires a standard passport-sized photo for visa extensions. Be sure your photo is: ● Taken within the last six months. ● Free of headgear (unless for religious reasons). ● Light or white background. ⪢ Application Form You can fill out the Visa Extension Application form when you arrive at the immigration office. Make sure all personal information is accurate to avoid unnecessary back-and-forth. Note: This form is now available to download and print online, which is advised to help save time. You can find this, along with other essential forms here . CONTENT MENU Step-by-Step Guide to Extending Your Visa at Central Festival Mall Chiangmai Now that you know Festival Mall’s advantages, let’s break down the extension process and what documents you need to get it right the first time. Forms available at the Immigration Center include 90 Days Report, Re-Entry, and Extension, but others can be downloaded online. Step 1 – Preparing Your Documents Before heading to Central Festival Mall, gather all required documents to ensure a smooth process. ⪢ Essential Documents ● Passport: Your passport must have a minimum validity of six months. ● Passport-Sized Photo:  Bring a recent passport photo (4x6 cm), though you can also have one taken in the mall. ● Photocopies:  You are required to provide photocopies of both passport pages and your passport photo. You will have time to do this while waiting for line 2. There is a tour desk that offers photocopies for 5 baht. They can also provide a pen (for 5 baht), as each copy needs to be signed and dated. You can get photocopies at the mall. The Tour Desk, located just opposite the immigration center entrance, offers copies for 5 Baht. ● TM.6 Departure Card: The small card stapled in your passport upon entering Thailand. ● TM.30 Notification Form: A form that requires landlords and Airbnb owners to report the stay of non-Thai nationals in their properties. This is required for 90-day reporting and any type of visa extension. ● Visa Extension Application Form: Available at the immigration office; you can fill this out on-site. You can also download this online and complete it before arrival to save time. ● Visa Extension Fee: The standard fee for a tourist visa extension is 1,900 THB. Note that this is cash only. ⪢ Additional Documents You May Need Depending on your visa type or recent travel history, you might need: ● Proof of Onward Travel: In some cases, proof of a return ticket or onward travel may be requested. ● Hotel Booking or Proof of Residence: If asked, this can serve as proof of your residence during your stay. Step 2 – Arriving at Festival Mall Once your documents are ready, head to Central Festival Mall and locate the immigration office. ⪢ Location Details The immigration office at Central Festival Chiangmai is on the second floor, along with the post office, and the mall’s dedicated government services area. Signage within the mall and elevator areas makes it easy to find the immigration section. ● Address: 99, 99/1 99/2 หมู่ที่ 4 Lampang - Chiang Mai Superhighway, Fa Ham, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50000, Thailand ● Website: centralchiangmai.com ● Phone: +66 5399 8999 ⪢ Operating Hours Central Festival Mall’s immigration office generally operates from 9 am to 5 pm , closing between 12 pm and 1 pm for lunch. It is open Monday through Friday , with closures on public holidays. ⪢ Safeguard Your Trip with SafetyWing To ensure peace of mind while traveling or living abroad, we recommend getting health insurance. SafetyWing's Essential plan covers travel and medical emergencies with options for adventure sports and electronics theft. Their Complete Plan  offers comprehensive health coverage with routine healthcare, mental health support, and maternity, anywhere in the world, including in your home country, on top of all Essential benefits. Step 3 – Checking In and Submitting Your Application Upon arrival, follow these steps to check in, get in line, and submit your application. ⪢ Understanding the Queue System The immigration office uses a queue ticketing system. Take a ticket as soon as you arrive and wait for your number to be called. Mornings are usually less crowded, so try to arrive early to avoid a lengthy wait. There are 3 queuing areas: ● Line 1: This is to the left of the main desk, and is where you will receive your number card. Depending on how busy it is, they may also check your paperwork here. ● Line 2: This is the main desk you see, marked 'Document Preparation'. Note that ticket numbers are upheld, and if you cannot skip this stage, even if you are told in line 1 that your documents are ok. This is also where your payment is checked, and your documents clipped together. Note that if you are asked to return after 1 pm, there is no way to skip the line before this, and you can only be seen when your number is called. ● General Waiting Area (3): After your documents and payment are checked, they will then be taken by the staff member to the immigration officers, and you will be moved on to the general waiting area. Here you will await your ticket number. Should your application be going smoothly, your first call will be for a photo, and then after you will be called to receive your passport and paperwork. ⪢ Presenting Your Documents Staff will review everything before processing the extension. Make sure your documents are organized and complete to avoid delays or being turned away. Step 4 – Paying the Visa Extension Fee The visa extension fee for tourists is 1,900 THB. This fee is payable in cash only, so have the exact amount ready to expedite the process. Note that you cannot pay for 2 extensions, and each applicant must pay independently. Step 5 – Waiting for Processing Processing time can range from 15 minutes to a few hours, depending on the day and volume of applications. Unlike the Airport, however, you are in a mall! There is plenty to check out while you wait, although bear in mind the main mall does not open until 10 am (the ground floor food court opens at 9 am though). ⪢ Using Mall Amenities During the Wait There are plenty of food options, at ground level and on the upper floors of the mall. Central Festival Mall offers a variety of amenities, making it easy to pass the time. You can grab a coffee, shop, or relax at one of the seating areas while waiting for your visa to be processed. It is also well air-conditioned, unlike the offices and waiting areas at the airport! There is even a grocery store here, so we typically plan our extension to coincide with an essentials run. CONTENT MENU Common Reasons for Visa Extension Denials While the extension process is generally smooth, there are a few common reasons for denial: ● Incomplete Documents: Missing or improperly filled-out forms will lead to rejection, with no exceptions. ● Incorrect Photo Specifications: Providing the wrong photo size or style may also delay processing. ● Overstays: If you have overstayed your visa without an extension, be prepared to pay additional fines. ● Yearly limit: Officially, there is a 6-month maximum stay out of 12 according to the Thai Government's immigration website, although this appears to be loosely enforced. That being said, there is a chance that this could cause a rejection. CONTENT MENU Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Visa Extensions at Central Festival Mall What are the fees for extending a visa at Festival Mall? The visa extension fee for a tourist visa is 1,900 THB. Remember that it is cash (Thai Baht) only, with no exception. Try to bring the exact amount to save time. You are not able to pay for someone else's application (even your partner). How long does the visa extension process take at Festival Mall? While processing times vary, expect to wait anywhere from 15 minutes to over an hour (after you have gone through the document check). If you arrive in the morning and they are busy, typically you will be given a ticket to return after lunch (1 pm). This can increase the overall time, however, you can access the mall after 10 am to help pass the time. Can I extend my visa more than once in Chiang Mai? Yes, multiple extensions are possible for eligible visa types, though each extension must follow the proper procedure and is not a guarantee. Do I need an appointment to extend my visa at Festival Mall? No, appointments are generally not required. Arriving early is recommended to avoid peak hours, although due to increasing popularity, it is likely that you will be given a ticket to return after 1 pm. Note that it is typically much busier around festival and holiday seasons. Is it safe to leave my passport during the visa extension process? Yes, you are required to leave your passport temporarily during processing. The administrator on the front desk will check over your paperwork and take payment, and advise if anything is missing or required. Once this step is complete, they will pass on all of the paperwork and your passport to the immigration officers, and you will be moved to the waiting area where your name will be called. Ensure you check your passport for the extension stamp when it is returned. Are there any visa types that can’t be extended at Festival Mall? If you entered Thailand without a visa under a visa exemption (e.g., for many nationalities, this allows a 30-day stay), you can usually extend this for an additional 30 days at Central Festival. If you entered Thailand with a Tourist Visa (e.g., a 60-day TR), you can typically extend it for another 30 days. Not all visa types can be extended at this location. For example, extensions for long-term visas like Non-Immigrant Visas (e.g., for work, education, or retirement) might require you to visit the main Immigration office near the airport or potentially even the Immigration Bureau in Bangkok. Tips for a Smooth Visa Extension Experience at Central Festival Chiangmai ⪢ Arrive Early to Avoid Crowds Mornings can tend to be quieter, so arriving early can save you time and help you avoid the midday rush. This is not always a guarantee, though, so be prepared to be asked to come back after lunch (1 pm). ⪢ Double-Check Documents Before Leaving Ensure you have all required documents prepared to prevent delays. This is the biggest contributor to waiting times as many people arrive with missing paperwork, most commonly the TM30 form and passport photos. There is no leniency when it comes to the TM30 and officers will not accept a phone call with your landlord as validation. ⪢ Keep Copies of Important Documents It’s wise to keep photocopies of your passport, visa, TM30, and other essential documents in case of emergencies. There is a small stall offering photocopies opposite the main queuing area. CONTENT MENU Final Thoughts Central Festival Mall offers a convenient, traveler-friendly option for visa extensions in Chiang Mai. With shorter wait times, easy access, and plenty of amenities, it’s a great alternative to the airport immigration office. By following the steps outlined above, gathering the required documents, and arriving early, you can enjoy a seamless extension process that lets you stay longer and experience the best of Chiang Mai. • Celebrating Loi Krathong in Thailand: A Traveler’s Guide

This beautiful festival of lights is all about letting go of negativity and making wishes for the future. Celebrating Loi Krathong is symbolized by floating handmade Krathongs (small baskets) on water and lighting lanterns into the sky. This ancient tradition also honors Phra Mae Khongkha, the goddess of water. In this post, we share all you need to know about one of the biggest festivals in Thailand . If you’ve ever dreamed of being part of such a magical tradition, Thailand is calling! This enchanting country, rich in culture and history, offers a plethora of experiences that combine customs and age-old practices. Festivals are a major part of the Thai calendar, and Loi Krathong is regarded as one of the most significant. We spent the majority of 2023 in Thailand, and we have so much love for the Land of Smiles. There are many reasons why we are kind of obsessed with this country, and Loi Krathong is certainly one of them! Let's take a Closer look at the tradition and meaning behind this festival, and all of the other good stuff you need to enjoy it yourself! In This Post... ● What is Loi Krathong? ● Where to Celebrate ● How to Participate ● Travel Tips ● Packing Essentials ● Why Experience Loi Krathong? ● FAQs ● Our Experience Rating Travel Resources & Offers ● Book Transport in Advance ● FREE Interactive Map of Thailand ● Book Thailand Tours with Klook ● Closer Lives Travel Hub Please note that some of the links in this post are affiliate links. At no additional cost to you, we may earn a commission if you purchase through these links, which helps support our blog and keeps it free to use. ℹ️ Privacy Policy What Is Loi Krathong? ⪢ The Meaning Behind Loi Krathong Loi Krathong is one of Thailand’s most enchanting festivals, where locals, expats, and tourists alike come together to release lotus-shaped floats (Krathongs) onto water bodies. These floats symbolize letting go of negativity, expressing gratitude to the water goddess, and seeking blessings for the future. It’s a spiritual event that blends natural beauty, cultural traditions, and reverence for nature. ⪢ How Loi Krathong Differs From Yi Peng Although often confused with Yi Peng, the lantern festival popular in northern Thailand, Loi Krathong has unique traditions. While Loi Krathong involves releasing Krathongs on rivers and lakes, Yi Peng is about setting lanterns into the sky. Both festivals share themes of renewal and gratitude but offer distinct experiences. ⪢ When Does Loi Krathong Take Place? The festival occurs in November during the full moon of the 12th lunar month. This timing signifies the end of the rainy season, marking a time to celebrate the abundance of water and show respect to the water goddess, Phra Mae Khongkha. ⪢ How Long Does the Celebration Last? Celebrations can last from one to three days, depending on the region. Larger cities like Chiang Mai and Bangkok extend the festivities with cultural performances, parades, and spectacular fireworks displays. CONTENT MENU Where to Celebrate Loi Krathong in Thailand ⪢ Best Cities for Loi Krathong Celebrations ● Chiang Mai: A magical mix of Loi Krathong and Yi Peng, with glowing Krathongs on the famous Mae Ping River that runs through the city, plus thousands of floating lanterns in the sky. This is one of the most popular locations, with some estimating up to a quarter of a million people celebrated here in 2024. ● Doi Saket: Only around 45 minutes away from Chiang Mai, the small town of Doi Saket hosts a pretty large 2 - 3 day lantern release bonanza, along with firework displays. Over 100,000 people are said to have attended in 2023, making this a growing hotspot for Loi Krathong. ● Sukhothai: Known as the festival's birthplace, Sukhothai provides an authentic experience with traditional ceremonies. ● Bangkok: The Chao Phraya River becomes a hub of activity with Krathongs, parades, and dazzling fireworks. Since the pandemic Thailand's capital has become somewhat of a rival to Chiang Mai, as this festival continues to gain popularity amongst tourists. ⪢ Easily Find Top Hotels in Thailand Use our interactive map to easily locate the top hotels in Chiang Mai, sourced from a variety of reputable platforms such as Booking, Vrbo, Expedia, Get Your Guide, and Hotels.com. Our map offers a user-friendly interface that allows you to zoom in and out, providing a comprehensive view of the area and enabling you to identify the most convenient hotel options based on your current location or desired destination. ⪢ Staying in Chiang Mai? Check Out The Palms Restaurant in Doi Saket We do enjoy big crowds and big events, but for Loi Krathong we have enjoyed a quieter, more intimate experience at the Palms Restaurant in Doi Saket , about a 45-minute drive outside of the city. As much as the city experience in Chiang Mai is fantastic, this spot is where the photos in this post have come from, and it is just about as authentic and intimate as you can get. This restaurant is in the middle of rice paddies, surrounded by mountains, and has a direct view of the lantern release and fireworks events in Doi Saket. Oh, and don't worry, you will get a lantern too! CONTENT MENU How to Participate in Loi Krathong as a Traveler ⪢ Getting a Krathong These lotus-shaped floats can be purchased at local markets or created from natural materials like banana leaves, flowers, and candles. We encouraged the use of eco-friendly options to minimize environmental impact. ⪢ Best Practices for Floating Your Krathong Floating your Krathong is a simple yet meaningful act. Find a safe spot by the water, light the candle on your Krathong, and let it float gently away. While doing this, make a wish or say a silent prayer. Always observe cultural etiquette by avoiding overly touristy behavior and respecting the traditions of the locals. ⪢ Best Practices for Using a Paper Lantern Paper lanterns can create beautiful atmospheres for events and celebrations, but their use can have environmental implications. If possible, try to use lanterns made with eco-friendly materials, such as biodegradable or recycled ones. Do try to avoid lanterns that contain plastic components or coatings that can harm wildlife. Remember, they all fall somewhere eventually! Also, please do be aware of trees! It is easy to get caught up in the moment, but do try to let go in an open space. It is also worth noting that they do take a while to 'warm up'. We found the best way is to light it and place it on the ground. After a couple of minutes or so, it will let you know when it is ready. P.S. Don't make the mistake of lighting it and then trying to push it up into the air too quickly. This will not work, and it will come down! Patience is key. Travel Tips for Experiencing Loi Krathong To ensure peace of mind while traveling or living abroad, we recommend getting health insurance. ⪢ Booking Accommodations Loi Krathong is a busy time, so book your stay early to secure the best locations. Hotels near rivers, like those along the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok or the Ping River in Chiang Mai, offer front-row views of the festivities, but they do get booked well in advance. We find that platforms like Expedia and Hotels.com are great resources to find deals and reviews. Also, if you are traveling to Chiang Mai, be sure to book your flight well in advance, as the airport is pretty small, and it gets hectic for flights and traffic on the lead-up to, and the days after the festival. ⪢ Safety Tips for Travelers ● Crowds: Be mindful of pickpockets and crowded areas, especially near popular water spots. ● Water Safety: Exercise caution around rivers and lakes, particularly with children or in areas with minimal lighting. ● Eco-Consciousness: Opt for biodegradable Krathongs and dispose of any waste responsibly. To put that into perspective, the population of the entire island is just over 4 million! On top of that, the number has been steadily increasing in recent years, as scooters have become the preferred mode of transportation for many people on the island. Scooters are affordable, fuel-efficient, and supposedly easier to maneuver in the congested traffic of Bali . However, they can also be dangerous, as they are often involved in accidents. In 2019, there sadly were over 1,000 people killed in motorcycle accidents alone in Bali. Officially there are over 10,000 accidents involving bikes every year on the island, although the total is believed to be far higher due to a lack of reporting of minor ins. Despite both of us having 20+ years of driving experience, neither of us had ever driven a bike or scooter before. Jenn had the slight upper hand as she had been a passenger many times on them, so that gave us some confidence. For Leon, it is one thing he NEVER thought he would do. They had always been a no-go for him over safety. Be it vans, trucks, or even forklifts, all of those 20 years we had always felt safe on four wheels. As travelers here in Asia , we know of the prominence of scooters and their affordability. We had also done our research surrounding their safety. Bali is notorious for its risks and in hindsight, we should have thought twice before trying it here, given it was our first time. Our quiet countryside residence in Thailand would have been a far better place to practice in hindsight (our Airbnb host offered to let us practice on theirs). But we procrastinated, didn't, and then here we were, ready and willing to join the mass ranks of scooter users in the beautiful area of Ubud . On day one, it went quite well, despite the nerves. On day 2, the day of the accident, we were excited to get back on it initially. It is important to note here that our Airbnb host refused us a bike initially when we told her it would be our first time. Yet when we were in a local restaurant that also rented bikes, we were told it was no problem. Eventually we got ours from a friend of our host, and needless to say, there was not exactly any paperwork or license checks. But from what we understand, that is a fairly common occurrence here. We were not entirely comfortable with it and knew the risks, but we decided to go for it anyway. Little did we know, but that turned out to be a very painful decision. Read on  for details on what happened, information about scooters in Indonesia , and things you can do to stay safe on the roads if you do choose to rent one, and THAT potential law change. CONTENT MENU Our Motorcycle Accident in Bali - How It Happened Only the day before the accident, Leon had posted on Instagram about getting on a scooter for the first time, feeling so proud that he had allayed his lifelong fears to try it. Just look at the advantages too. Highly versatile, easy to rent, and a way of getting through traffic quicker. On top of that, here in Ubud (Bali), you can rent one for less than $4 a day. Win win right? We were fine on the first day, as mentioned earlier, albeit a little nervous and shaky. On Tuesday we were feeling much more confident and super excited, planning our YouTube video for a trip up to the Ceking rice terraces, the famous Bali swing, and whatever else we could find in this jungle paradise. The traffic in Ubud is insane , so we decided to avoid the main route of chaos and take the only other option, the quiet backroads. We were worried about the traffic (ironically), so we thought it would be way easier. But... these roads are tight, bendy, hilly, and congested. We felt OK, it was a 30-minute ride and we were halfway through. It is so hard though; without a sat nav, we could not anticipate the bends. So we were going slow! We were going down a hill (on a particularly narrow stretch) and around a bend when it happened. There was a truck and bike behind us trying to overtake, and then as we got past the blind point of the turn, there was an oncoming truck on the road, and it didn't honk (this is usually standard practice to warn bikes). We had to swerve to dodge them, and then the bike slipped; Leon ended up underneath the bike, and Jenn went over the top. The injuries were bad, and we were both in shock, but thankfully, there was no concussion. The van and bike did not stop, but others did. Someone stopped and moved the bike from the road, and we were offered water too. We walked to a local store a few hundred meters away and called a taxi. We were both super stressed, in shock, and bleeding. Despite the language barrier, the store was incredibly kind, getting us wipes and tissues, and they even recovered the bike from where it was parked for us. We left the bike at the store and arranged for its owner to pick it up. All in all, we had to pay $35 for the damage, and there was no issue with the owner. It all kind of felt normal, just as it did when we walked into the pharmacy on the way back to the Airbnb we were in. We were grateful for this, although it was a sign that perhaps they were used to dealing with this kind of accident. The stats don't lie. We are so thankful it was not worse, with no broken bones, despite the intense pain of our injuries. It sucks as we were in our dream destination and couldn't do anything but rest up. But we are so thankful to be alive! Since it happened, on the few occasions we have had to venture outside, the people have been incredible too. Locals and tourists acknowledge us wherever we go, showing such lovely care and compassion. We honestly have not been able to walk for more than a few minutes without being approached by someone. Everyone has recommended treatment and offered support and advice too. It is humbling, and just goes to show the incredible kindness and compassion that we often forget that most people do have! CONTENT MENU Scooters and Bikes in Indonesia According to the Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas Polri), there were 131 million registered motorcycles in Indonesia as of 2022. This means that approximately 60% of the population of Indonesia uses a motorcycle as their primary mode of transportation. There are several reasons why motorcycles are so popular in Indonesia. First, they are relatively affordable. A new motorcycle can be purchased for as little as $1,000. Second, motorcycles are fuel-efficient. A motorcycle can get up to 50 miles per hour and can save a lot of money on transportation costs. Third, motorcycles are easy to maneuver in the congested traffic of Indonesia. However, the risks associated with using motorcycles in Indonesia are clear; case in point in this post. Motorcycles are involved in a high number of accidents, and the roads in Indonesia are often poorly maintained. Always wear a helmet, try not to go too fast, and keep both hands on the handlebars at all times. And please do not use your phone (unless for sat nav). CONTENT MENU What to Consider to Avoid an Accident on Bali's Roads ⪢ High Accident Rates Scooter and motorbike accidents are a significant cause of injuries and fatalities worldwide. In many countries, including Bali, they account for a large proportion of road traffic accidents. ⪢ Vulnerability Riders of scooters and motorbikes are more exposed to the risk of injury compared to occupants of cars or other enclosed vehicles. The lack of protective barriers increases the likelihood of severe injuries in case of a collision. ⪢ Helmet Usage Wearing a helmet can significantly reduce the risk of head injuries and fatalities in scooter and motorbike accidents. Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, including Bali, helmet usage is not vigorously enforced or practiced consistently mainly by locals. That being said, it is still a legal requirement in Indonesia, and police will pull over tourists without one. ⪢ Road Conditions Uneven road surfaces, potholes, and inadequate infrastructure can contribute to accidents involving scooters and motorcycles. In Bali, where road conditions can be challenging, it's essential to exercise caution and adapt your driving style accordingly. ⪢ Traffic Congestion Bali, like many popular tourist destinations, experiences heavy traffic congestion. This can lead to increased risks for scooter and motorbike riders, such as rear-end collisions and sideswipes. In Ubud , trust us, it is madness out there! ⪢ Inexperienced Riders Scooters and motorbikes are often popular choices for tourists and inexperienced riders due to their affordability and ease of use. Lack of familiarity with local traffic rules and riding in unfamiliar environments can increase the risk of accidents, as it did for us sadly. ⪢ Impaired Driving Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a major contributing factor in scooter and motorbike accidents. It impairs judgment, coordination, and reaction time, making accidents more likely to occur. Besides, it is ILLEGAL. Just don't do it, it is not worth the risk. ⪢ Defensive Driving Practicing defensive driving techniques, such as maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles, using turn signals, and staying alert to potential hazards, can significantly reduce the risk of accidents. If you are not comfortable driving a scooter, consider using Grab or another ride/taxi service in Bali. You can even get bike taxis, which are super affordable and have experienced drivers who know the roads and the ways of the locals. Yes, you may suffer in the chaotic traffic if you do take this option, but after what we've experienced and also heard from others, we would sooner take our time and get to our destination later than take this risk again. That is just us, and we only hope it will not be you!! CONTENT MENU Potential Law Change BANNING Foreigners from Renting Vehicles in Bali Back in mid-March 2023, Bali's Governor Koster made a series of monumental announcements that proposed changes to how foreign tourists travel in Bali. This policy includes digital nomads and ex-pats and effectively bans any non-Indonesian from driving motorcycles, scooters, or cars on the island, irrespective of whether they have an international or even local driving license. “Those tourists have to travel, walk, and use cars to travel. It is no longer allowed to use a motorcycle or anything that is not from a travel agent.” -Governor Koster This is a monumental change for Bali, although it is currently still not written into law. As of now, tourists are ONLY permitted to rent vehicles from authorized agencies. This is particularly interesting as GoJek and Grab services, which are hugely popular, are NOT recognized as formal travel agents. CONTENT MENU What You Need to Rent a Bike in Bali Despite the aforementioned announcement, currently, from what we have seen, there is little change to what has been the status quo in Bali for many years. We compiled the list below before we found out about this new law, and as this post shows, things have yet to change. From what we have seen, no one seems to be aware of it, and bikes and scooters continue to be rented as they are. But be very aware that this may become null and void when the ban comes into full effect. Please check local government sources for up-to-date information before your visit. ⪢ Licenses A driving license is required here in Indonesia, along with an International Drivers Licence which you must get in your home country. Even if your rental company does not ask, carry them on you at all times as if ever you are stopped by the police, they most certainly will. ⪢ Where to Rent One As of March 2023, tourists can only hire a motorcycle from a business that is registered with the relevant trade agencies or the Transportation Renting Association in Bali. While there are hundreds of companies that are part of the TRA in Bali, there are just as many informal operations renting motorcycles to tourists, digital nomads, and ex-pats in Bali. Residents who are not formally registered as members of trade agencies or the transportation renting association are not permitted to rent two-wheeling vehicles to foreign tourists. Unfortunately, we only found this out after our accident! ⪢ Rental Costs This depends on the strength of the scooter itself, but typically prices can range from 70-100k IDR per day for lower-end bikes (110cc, i.e., Scoopy bikes) to 150k IDR per day for bikes at 150cc. Prices may be offered at a discount for long-term rentals. ⪢ Insurance It is important to ensure ownership/registration papers are with the bike at all times, but do not confuse this with insurance. This is not something that will likely be offered to you, so check with your travel insurance (if you have it) to see if you are covered, and the ownership/registration, as it is now required by law. To ensure peace of mind while traveling or living abroad, we recommend getting health insurance. ⪢ Fuel Fuel is very affordable and a full tank will set you back around $3 US. All Balinese villages tend to have roadside fuel stands, marked up in red and blue labels. There are only two options, Bensin or Pertamax, usually located outside of a shopfront, or Warung (a small privately owned restaurant). Bensin is yellow and Pertamax is blue Pertamax is slightly more expensive but has better quality fuel, and is usually the default if you do not specify. Alternatively, you can top up at a Pertamina Gas Station, although this may be more expensive as it is not self-service, as with virtually all petrol stations in Asia. NOTE: You will often find shelves filled with bottles of fuel outside stores, too. Please be careful with this, as from what we have heard, the quality is questionable, it is more expensive, and often watered down. ⪢ Police A good tip is to keep some loose change in your pocket, maybe 80 - 100k IDR. If the police do pull you over, usually they will check your documents. Be warned that you could expect a heavy fine if you are not wearing a helmet, but usually, they are just looking to make you a little nervous and extract a little cash. ⪢ Clothing Most people tend to wear flip-flops/thongs when using bikes, as we did. In hindsight we would strongly recommend closed footwear as foot abrasions are debilitating and very uncomfortable! Long-sleeve tops are also advisable, not just for extra protection if you fall but also to protect from the sun. ⪢ Back Roads As you have read already, the back roads can be very hazardous for bike users here. The roads are hilly, full of twists and turns, narrow and potholed. Visibility is also low on bends due to trees and overgrowth, so take particular care there. We would recommend sticking to the main drag if you are inexperienced. ⪢ Honking Do not be alarmed if people honk at you, this is generally to let you know they are there (as opposed to irritation like in England and Canada ). It is also best practice to honk on turns and blind bends, to alert people and oncoming vehicles. ⪢ Satellite Navigation One of our biggest regrets is not having a phone holder, which we strongly advise after our somber lesson learned. It is not necessarily easy to get lost in a place like Ubud, which does not have many main roads in and out, but a sat nav will help for anticipating bends that are not signposted and can tend to come out of nowhere. CONTENT MENU Our Message on Renting Bikes in Bali This has been such a traumatic experience for us, and we are just so grateful to be here to write this post and share what happened. We do not want to discourage anyone from riding scooters or bikes. While the accident rates are scarily high, it is important to remember that millions of people use them every day, including tourists, and they are fun and exciting. When you look at the statistics, accidents account for less than 1% of the total number of bike users in Bali. You can have a great time riding scooters, and sometimes accidents just happen. We survived, and we just hope to reach out and implore you to stay safe and take the very best of care, wherever you are in the world. Have you had a scooter accident? Please do share your experience in the comments if you feel comfortable, and help us to raise awareness on bike safety. Take care out there!
