In the context of grombre, the term refers to the natural progression from one's original hair color to shades of gray or silver .   Many, if not most, people go through this process when they decide to ditch the hair dye and naturally embrace their grey hair .  The process entails naturally allowing your hair to grow out, no longer dyeing your hair.  Some people do this only until they can cut it to a length suitable for them.  Others, like myself, desire to maintain their length and let the grow-out process progress until the hair is completely grown out or cut away.  So although this is often a temporary process, and look , temporary can often mean YEARS with a multitude of different lengths in the balance of the old and new hair throughout the process. It can become quite evident early on that we will have to be strong in our decisions when sporting a grombre look because people have so many questions.  The grombre look creates curiosity and questioning in others that the advocacy happens whether you want it to or not! Embracing Grombre So here's to grombre and here’s to those choosing to rock one : a celebration of gray, a testament to authenticity, and a reminder that beauty knows no age. Because grey hair starts as young as the late teens and early twenties, which we still don’t seem to realize because we have been taught by society to hide it unless you are OLD , like REALLY OLD .  Is it any wonder why we, as a society, have equated silver hair with age?  It’s only after decades of dyeing and hiding our white hair that women are finally saying ENOUGH to dyeing their hair and being exhausted from spending so much money, time, and life energy trying to hide it. I thought my hair was going to grow in SO white. My temples are very light but I have a darker upper strip and a lot of dark and salt and pepper hair. I also have larger silver highlighted streaks . It’s fascinating to see all the women with their unique patterning styles. 5. I chose to step ‘ outside of the box ’ and ditch the hair dye for many reasons but the main two for me would be the constant stress and frustration of the new root growth showing within weeks of coloring. We color our hair to feel good about it, and we do, for a few weeks. Then we are worried about the new growth showing again.   Many of us can even be found chopping the top off of our heads in selfies to hide the greys. I know I did! Then you are paying for yet another trip to the salon or buying a new box of dye.  I started to recognize and feel the weight of this cycle, and I decided life had enough things demanding my time, attention, and money. We know life has no problem finding ways to add stress. I wasn’t willing to pay any currency to do this to myself any longer, so I broke the cycle. 11 Months Grombre Now here we are, 11 months into my natural silver hair grow-out journey. It’s been full of doubts and uncertainties, wonders and curiosities. It’s had me questioning my views on aging and learning about positive language and the differences between an anti- and a pro-aging perspective. I am now in the fondly referred to as 'grombre' or 'gray ombre' stage of my growout. The upper quarter or half of my hair is natural, and the lower half is the previously dyed colour.  Some people struggle watching themselves and their hair through the process, but I have quite enjoyed it. I have decided to embrace and celebrate it. I couldn’t be happier that I stuck with it and didn't give in to dye my hair even through the harder days and trust me there are many. 10 Advantages and Benefits of Ditching the Dye and Letting Your Natural Hair Shine! 1. When you have grey hair it is also a very different change due to societal pressure. We feel pressure that our perception and reception in society may change. Grey hair isn't for old people. Grey hair is so common in many people in their 20s and 30s. It is a hair colour. Many girls and young women feel pressured into coloring their hair from a young age, often told their hair is flat or mousy. So much of our time, money, and energy is spent in this area of our lives. Love Watching Your Hair Grow I am learning to love and accept my hair as it grows in now. My hair has surprised me and not at all grown in as I had hoped for or even anticipated. It's so interesting to go from dreading the silver and white hairs to quickly wishing you had even more of them! It's a journey of letting go and trusting the process. I love growing and changing along with my hair, and I am so happy that my hair is so long, so I have plenty of time to enjoy this transformation. I feel passionate about normalizing grey hair in society for women of all ages. For that to happen, people need to see women with grey hair of all ages. Tucked away on the west coast, roughly 2 hours northwest of the Ngurah Rai International Airport, it sits nestled between verdant rice paddies and the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean. You'll find it just north of the small village of Sangguling, at the mouth of the Balian River. This secluded location guarantees a more peaceful and intimate experience compared to the bustling south of Bali. Balian Beach is known as a surfer's paradise, where volcanic ash paints the sand black in places, and powerful waves serenade sun-kissed shores. Imagine hand-in-hand strolls along the secluded coast, watching surfers dance with the ocean before sharing intimate moments under starlit skies. That is what you get here in a spot that seems so quiet at night and tranquil during the day, but where you will always find a cool bar or throng of people in a restaurant. We were blown away by how quiet it was, strolling on gorgeous white sand beaches without a soul in sight. This is a place of immense peace and tranquillity, where you can take boat tours among the mangroves that are far more personal and connected than the big tourist traps in neighbouring Thailand . Aside from just beaches, Langkawi offers plenty of public spaces, boardwalks, and parks too. Batumi, Republic of Adjara (in Georgia) Most people think of the U.S state of Georgia when we mention it. Georgia is very much a country of its own, and is in one of those spots that is so Eastern Europe it becomes Western Asia . A strategically important city on the Adjara coast, Batumi is easily accessible by plane, with direct flights from major European cities, or by train for a scenic journey through the Caucasus Mountains. European charm meets Eastern vibes on the cobbled streets, giving a flair to the city that can be as romantic as it can be adventurous. Against a backdrop of stunning mountains, the city has a coastline lined by impressive boardwalks, with monuments and gardens to accompany a fantastic beach, even if it is a pebble one. Some of the best sunsets we have ever seen, almost every day here in Batumi. The skies can be gorgeous here, with sunsets to die for. With the beach covered, heading inland is a real treat with quirky architecture like a skyscraper with a built-in Ferris Wheel and a tower straddled with the unique letters of the Georgian alphabet. Batumi also boasts a youthful energy, with bustling bars and clubs alongside peaceful public squares and spaces, offering something for every romantic whim. All accompanied by a great variety of restaurants, plenty of bars and wine spots (wine is said to have been invented here), and a rather unusually large amount of casinos. Which, by the way, offer free buffet food, beverages, and even smokes to their guests. San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico San Cristóbal de las Casas, also known by its native Tzotzil name Jovel, is nestled in the Central Highlands region of the Mexican state of Chiapas in Mexico . We spent 3 incredible months here enjoying all it had to offer. The main thoroughfare through the town is the heartbeat of the action, with gorgeous bars and bistros, restaurants and shops, and all the fresh produce you can shake your reusable grocery bag at. In a Spain-esque style, a sleepy and serene street roars into life in the evenings, with street vendors, performers, artists, and musicians springing to action every evening. Couple that with fireworks, epic sunsets, and dry lightning phenomenon, a quirky cool Airbnb , and that very special Mexican cuisine, and San Cristobal will certainly grab your attention. El Gouna, Hurghada, Egypt El Gouna, also known as the "Venice of the Red Sea," isn't your typical Egyptian experience. This resort town lies along the Red Sea coast in south-eastern Egypt , roughly 25 km north of Hurghada. Instead of sprawling, sandy beaches, El Gouna is a network of lagoons and canals, creating a unique "Little Venice" vibe. That being said, it still has epic beaches too! Imagine strolling hand-in-hand along charming walkways beside turquoise waters, exploring colorful marinas lined with incredible yachts, and enjoying romantic gondola rides under the Egyptian sun. Beyond its aquatic charm, El Gouna offers a diverse range of adventures; snorkel amid vibrant coral reefs, kite-surf on crystal-clear waters (which it is world-renowned for), or explore the nearby desert landscapes by ATV or in a hot air balloon. This secluded haven promises a romantic escape unlike any other in Egypt. El-Gouna is a walled city, which means that only residents, workers, and guests are allowed in. The security is quite welcome, making it feel super safe, even if you never actually see the 'walls'. There are spectacular restaurants here, all types of cuisine, along with a vibrant nightlife. Everything about it impressed us; it is modern yet old, traditional yet different, resort style yet it feels like a city. It kind of has to be seen to be believed, although there is one drawback, in that if you want to go to Luxor, you will need a nearly 20-hour day to do it. Gundogan, Bodrum, Türkiye Gundogan in Türkiye offers a blissful escape on the Aegean coast, approximately 17 km southwest of Bodrum. This hidden gem sits within the larger Milas district, surrounded by rolling hills, olive groves, and picturesque bays. Unlike its bustling neighbor, Bodrum, Gundogan exudes a tranquil atmosphere, making it ideal for couples seeking a peaceful and romantic getaway. Having come from a month in Istanbul , the slower pace of Gundogan was very welcome. We came here 2 months before the start of its actual 'season', which meant we were able to enjoy that very sleepy feel as the town sprang to life with businesses getting ready. Let us explain; this bay of this town is completely lined with resorts, bars, and restaurants, in between some villas. They ceremoniously shut down outside of peak season, laying out all of the reed rush parasols and furniture, clearing the decks, and leaving the foliage to grow. How cool is this palm tree! We walked past it every day on the Gundogan boardwalk.k As the season starts to draw near, every day something new starts to appear. Our Airbnb was about halfway up the hill around the bay, and it was awesome to take daily walks down it to the boardwalk for exercise and just because. With no one around, it was seriously beautiful! It amazed us really as the temperature was still in the low 20s, which is just about perfect! So, (we digress), as you walk past, it is great to watch the decks being polished, jetties being set up, bushes being cut back, and fresh menu stands making their way onto the path. April to the end of May is the golden spot here. Gundogan has all of the Turkish charm, calls-to-prayer, markets, and traditional restaurants you could want, it has resorts, water sports, sandy beaches, and adventure tours. Not to mention incredible and vibrant flowers that are beautifully grown in most of the gardens of the white-washed houses. Which, by the way, is a rule here in Gundogan! It may always lose out to Bodrum in the popularity stakes, but you know what, it is probably better that way. Arundel, West Sussex, England Located on the River Arun in West Sussex, England , lies the historic town of Arundel. This charming haven, about 80 km south of London, boasts a medieval castle towering over quaint cobbled streets lined with independent shops and traditional pubs. Imagine hand-in-hand strolls along the riverbank, breathing in the fresh air and soaking in the picturesque views of the castle reflected in the water. We could not get enough of this view at Arundel Castle. Arundel Castle, dating back to the 11th century, offers a glimpse into England's past. It also happens to boast one of the finest gardens you will likely find, in particular a spectacular rose garden that we will never forget. Beyond the castle walls, you will find the equally spectacular Arundel Cathedral, known for its Gothic architecture and giant circular stained-glass window. The location of Arundel is also pretty neat if you want to tie in other must-see spots, including Stonehenge and the Roman city of Bath. We did this loop on a weekend, and it makes for a really neat road trip. While Arundel may be well known in England, it is not a name that rolls off the tongue amongst foreigners. You think castle, you think of Windsor, right? Or the Tower of London? Whitby, North Yorkshire, England Whitby, set on the North Yorkshire coast where the River Esk meets the North Sea, offers a unique blend of romantic charm, historical intrigue, and natural beauty. This ancient seaside town, roughly 200 miles north of London, is steeped in history. Its East Cliff is dominated by the imposing ruins of Whitby Abbey, a 7th-century monastery famously linked to Bram Stoker's Dracula. Make no mistake, we have been to copious amounts of ruined sites around the world, and this is the ONE to see. The magnificent Whitby Abbey. Even in ruins, it is still imperious! Just the whole experience here is like a whimsical story. From the moment we stepped off the traditional steam train from Pickering, yes, steam train, the town of Whitby was everything we imagined England would have been like back in the day. As a fishing town, there are old nets and crates everywhere, fishing and sail boats in the harbour, old stores with the weather-worn oak beams on the outside, and old stone-built buildings still standing strong after hundreds of years. St Mary's Church Walking towards the sea brings you to 109 steps, which lead to a wonderful old church with one of the most incredible views of any cemetery we have ever come across. The view from up there is one of a kind, even before one gets to the Whitby Abbey ruins themselves, set against a deep blue sky like a painting out of the Louvre. Then package that all together with Dracula and Bram Stoker, fish and chips, old English pubs, sandy beaches, clifftop trails, and the surrounding Yorkshire Moors National Park. Sacre Coeur, Paris, France The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, France , commonly known as Sacré-Coeur Basilica and often simply Sacré-Coeur, is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica in Paris dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is located at the summit of the butte Montmartre, at an altitude of 130 meters (427 feet). The views of Paris from here are phenomenal. From this elevated perch, the Sacré-Coeur offers spectacular panoramic views of the entire city of Paris. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. This breathtaking view, combined with the basilica's stunning architecture, makes it a popular tourist destination. Not just for tourists, it also made it a rather beautiful spot for an evening celebrating our engagement, which we made formal in Cyprus the week prior. We were here literally a few days after, and it was a fitting spot. A place that is as alive during the night as it is during the day. As is Paris itself, of course! Not sure what was going on here, but it was a blast! Okay, so we admit, you will probably find Paris in practically every guide you will ever see about romantic destinations. Most likely in the top two or something, too. So sorry not sorry about that, but here we are. We have no excuses haha! Seriously though, we need not mention all of the other Paris stuff, Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Catacombs, Arc de Triomphe, so on and so on... 11. Isla de Pasion, Cozumel, Mexico Everything about this place fits in with wanderlust and romance. Like a glove! Situated approximately 10 minutes by boat from Cozumel's main shore in Mexico , Isla de Pasion sits on the Caribbean Sea, offering secluded vibes and crystal-clear waters. This private island boasts powdery white sand beaches, fringed by palm trees and lapped by turquoise waters. We had the beach and the docks to ourselves! To get there, you can take an ATV through the main central area of Cozumel, on the only road out of town that goes past the main island resorts before drifting off towards the isolated pier where boats ferry those who find them to the island. Quite literally, you drive off the road onto a dirt path, dodging potholes and overhanging foliage all the way, before parking up in a clearing by a dock that has seen better days. After negotiating with the almost-no-English boat driver on price, we took a three-hour return and went off to enjoy this paradise island that would not look out of place in a Maldives brochure. It is a little bit of a nervous moment waiting for the boat to return, unnecessary, but still. Anyway, we got picked up, albeit a little late, and here we are telling you to do the same thing . Hoi An, Vietnam Hoi An in Vietnam is a captivating town renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage status and its captivating blend of history, culture, and charm. Located approximately 30 kilometers south of Da Nang city and situated beside the picturesque Thu Bon River, Hoi An offers a unique experience that is as romantic as it is cultural and, dare we say it, even spiritual. Stepping into Hoi An's ancient town feels like stepping back in time. Its well-preserved streets, lined with lantern-adorned yellow shophouses dating back to the 15th-19th centuries, exude a magical atmosphere. Its thriving market is the heartbeat of the place, covering most of the riverside streets with just about everything you can think of. The smells were beautiful too, no durian in sight (if you do not know Durian fruit, you will when you come to Asia), just warm incense and kind smiles to accompany them. This show happens every night at Hoi An Memories Theme Park. As the sun sets, the transformation in the town gets underway, with more lanterns than you can imagine on just about every tree and every store. This town has been a trading hub for so long, it has blended and frozen cultures from all over Asia . It tells this story in a mesmerizing show called Hoi An Memories, located on an island on the river. Add this experience to gorgeous local cafes and restaurants, friendly locals, and the monthly lantern festival, lighting candles on the river, and you have a place of romance and wanderlust. Period! A shop at Mulberry Silk Village. A big shout out to the incredible Mulberry Silk Village in Hoi An , where we stayed too. We are yet to write about this incredible experience on our blog, but it will be coming soon! This fabulous hotel includes a silk workshop with traditional techniques and hand-sewn clothing. Not to mention exquisite cuisine and several pools to enjoy and relax in. ⪢ Save for Later: 🔗 Magic in the Moonlight: Hoi An Night Market 13. Singapore Singapore , a sovereign island city-state in Southeast Asia, is a vibrant metropolis known for its futuristic skyline, colonial architecture, and diverse cultural tapestry. Sitting at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore is separated from Malaysia by the Johor Strait and Indonesia by the Singapore Strait. Its compact size, measuring just 728 square kilometers, makes it easily explorable on foot or by its efficient public transportation system. Singapore's unique character stems from its multicultural population, comprising Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Eurasian communities. This blend is reflected in its languages, religions, cuisine, and architecture, creating a truly fascinating experience for visitors. The Garden Rhapsody Light and Sound Show. Perhaps most famous for its iconic Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands, this futuristic city has plenty to romanticize about. If you do not know about these two places, you will see them featured just about anywhere Singapore is mentioned. But while this garden paradise, complete with the famous Supertree Grove and Cloud Forest Dome, is great during the day, at night it becomes a free light show beneath the trees and stars. Marina Bay Sands as seen from Gardens by the Bay. Meanwhile, Marina Bay Sands, which affords you a rooftop view with breathtaking views of the bay, becomes a shopping haven throughfare to the electric Spectra Light and Water Show, also free at night. Then, of course, there is probably the best Chinatown in all of Southeast Asia, with its epic Hawker Center complete with the world's first hawker Michelin Star, Hawker Chan. Oh, and then there is Little India, local islands to explore, a vibrant nightlife, and everything without the need for a car. Oh, and the incredible world-famous Jewel at Changi Airport (which by the way is one of the best airports in the world). Sold on Singapore yet? Hawker Chan does deserve its Michelin Star. Delicious! 14. Chiang Rai, Thailand Chiang Rai, located in the mountainous northern region of Thailand , is a city brimming with cultural charm, natural beauty, and unique experiences. Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbor, Chiang Mai , Chiang Rai offers a more relaxed and authentic Thai experience, perfect for those seeking to delve deeper into the country's rich heritage and stunning landscapes. The Blue Temple, aka Wat Rong Suea Ten. As with most Thai cities, Chiang Rai is brimming with temples, amongst them some of the most famous in the country itself. The White Temple and the Blue Temple are indeed worthy of that title, which is saying something given there are over 40,000 across the land of smiles. The best part about here, however, was not so much the inner city, but more about the outskirts, where we found a fantastic Airbnb. At the time, we were renting a car and had a permanent stay in Chiang Mai. So we came up to the Rai via the only highway, which happens to be windy and mountainous and very nice, to stay in a 'dome', overlooking a delightful mountain valley with a bathtub on its balcony. Style Paidoi Resort is one of those that speaks for itself, and goes hand in hand with the romance, of course! We will get around to writing about it one day, but for now, you are just gonna have to trust us, and in the meantime, check out the sister temples and the very odd, and almost concerning Baan Dam Museum below. ⪢ Top Destinations in Chiang Rai: 🔗 Black House Museum 🔗 The Blue Temple Chiang Rai 🔗 The White Temple in Chiang Rai 15. Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada Last on the list but by no means the least, Niagara Falls is a group of three waterfalls at the southern end of Niagara Gorge, spanning the border between the province of Ontario in Canada and the state of New York in the United States. The largest of the three is Horseshoe Falls, which straddles the international border of the two countries. It is also known as the Canadian Falls, and this is the one we visited. Twice, and for Jenn (as a Canadian from Toronto), many more on top of that! If you are looking for a romantic stroll, it doesn't get much better than Niagara Falls at night. Niagara Falls is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and for good reason. The falls are truly awe-inspiring, with a total height of 167 feet (51 m) and a width of 3,419 feet (1,043 m). The water flow rate is an average of 6,000 cubic meters per second (212,000 cubic feet per second), although this can vary depending on the time of year and weather conditions. It is a truly spectacular sight to witness, especially from the top of the falls or at night with the mesmerizing fireworks and light show. There are many different ways to experience Niagara Falls, from taking a boat ride to the bottom of the falls to walking behind them. As mentioned earlier, you can also take a boardwalk right up to the top, and you can even take a zip line back down to the bottom during the day or at night. There is so much to do here, including go-karts and 5D theatres. There are a ton of other activities around the falls, too, including amusements, museums, bars, restaurants, and resorts. There is something truly magical about Niagara Falls, and the energy here is powerful. Incredibly, it seems to be avoided on many a list out there, but trust us, it is worth it. For instance, a week's accommodation priced at $2,000 on the platform might be reduced to $1,600 if the service fees are eliminated. That's an enticing saving, right? However, it's essential to reconsider. Operating outside Airbnb's system is not a wise choice. It’s better to already install a VPN on iOS  and try to save on housing by changing the region. This way, you will be protected by Airbnb and save money. 6. Store Your Valuables Safely You should check whether their accommodations include a secure safe for storing valuables. Essential items such as passports, electronic devices, and jewelry should be placed in the most secure location available, and some rental properties offer safe storage solutions. Before recording the video you will see later in this post, Jenn and I stood hand-in-hand and mesmerized under the spotlight of a street lamp, in the middle of a bend in the road at night. We had just walked out of an alleyway in Bedford, England , an impromptu evening walk after a great evening spent with our neighbors and friends. As we turned to go back home, what we saw was something we will NEVER forget. Before choosing this as our path, we had walked in the opposite direction but it was exceptionally blustery and it put us off... as if the wind was blowing against us. We decided to walk down an alley a few blocks back in the opposite direction. As we went down the dimly lit alley, we had a brief discussion about Jenn leaving her phone at home. 'Going for a walk, why would I need it?' Jenn said. At that point, Leon remarked how he always carries his phone, just in case. For emergencies, for random things, he might see. Jenn agreed, and how apt that conversation was, just moments before our encounter. Just before leaving the alleyway into the clearing, Jenn said we should 'turn in the spotlight' and head back. So we did, and as we turned, we saw what we can only describe as a bright orange ball of light. Like the orange of the old street lamps before they replaced them with LED. Imagine that and then amplify it about fivefold. This light made no noise and hovered in the distance at the same height as the ridge of the rooflines of the houses you see past the lamp. We stood there almost static and awestruck as this light ghosted from left to right across the street. It was roughly 20ft away. Stretch your arm out upwards, point your finger, and imagine a fifty-pence piece at the end of it. That was how big it was. It moved slowly and had a circular shape to its right / front. From the back was an almost flat vertical line separating the spectacular orange glow from what looked like a grayish sphere emanating like a tail. It was completely noiseless and was nothing like any drone we have even imagined, let alone seen. As we watched, amazed, it almost looked like it turned, came towards us, then moved back, and continued to the left across to where the alleyway was behind us. At that point, Jenn jolted us out of our almost trance-like state and said to record it. So I grabbed my phone, although invariably by this point it was starting to move upwards, getting faster and faster. It was now moving rapidly away from us into the night sky towards the stars. Jenn went to follow it down the alley as I recorded. Then, as quickly as it came, it was gone. This was certainly no floating lantern; the movement, size, and appearance as I zoomed in demonstrate that. As far as we are aware, drones have discernible lights and noise, and it had none of those elements either. There are many things we were feeling after what we saw; awe, amazement, excitement, and wonder. The way it approached us, the way we stood stunned, the way it zipped up into the night sky after its slow hover, it is something we cannot explain. Watch on YouTube We have both watched an absolute ton of documentaries about UFOs, studied ancient alien theories, consumed many shows about conspiracies, and studied numerous religions and civilizations and their connections to flying objects in the sky. If this were man-made, it is certainly nothing like we have ever seen. Check out the video below and see what you think. Obviously, in hindsight, we wish we had pulled the phone out earlier! It is really funny as Leon records everything all of the time, being an avid photographer, but seeing this was a real shock and it did not even cross our minds until Jenn snapped us out of it. We have read about many accounts like this. The paralysis is real! The photos you see below were taken at 100x zoom, at a distance way closer than the moon. Just for context, I filmed this on my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. For those that do not know, the camera has 100x zoom, powerful enough to snap a shot of the moon in incredible detail: This UAP / UFO was MUCH closer than the moon, of course. So much so that we would have fully expected my phone to pick up a more detailed image! Furthermore, we celebrated New Year's in Thailand a month later by releasing lanterns into the sky, a traditional activity in the Land of Smiles. When we originally told people about our encounter, many suggested that it could have been a lantern. So this was a great opportunity to take a shot of one in the sky and compare the footage. Leon took this shot at a much further distance than the photo of the UAP. The night conditions were virtually the same, too; it was a clear night sky. As you can see, the lantern is easy to make out (albeit a little blurry). This is most certainly not what we saw. Just for good measure, this was a video of releasing the lantern: On a final note, we have to mention that only days earlier, we had been discussing aliens and UFOs, something Leon has believed in his entire life. We have had so many debates and discussions about this and Leon kept talking about how desperate he was to see something... anything. Jenn said in this discussion 'Well, okay universe, Leon wants to see one, I want to see one, just do it already!' Two days later, this happened! We do not believe in coincidences, and we know for sure that we are being guided, that we are manifesting all the time, and that our connection to the universe is strong. The whole series of events, from being pushed back by a crazy wind, to our discussion about Jenn not having her phone in the alley, from Jenn pointing towards the spotlight at the end of the alley and wanting to turn back, to then seeing this hovering ball of light. It did feel like we were meant to see this. This happened on October 15th, 2022, at 20:20, in Shortstown, Bedford, England. We felt compelled to come forward after watching The Lost Century by Steven Greer, who also made the documentary Unacknowledged, and is the founder of the CE5 program. (We would recommend you check them out). We had a debrief in our back garden when we got back, admittedly super excited and still pretty shocked at what had transpired. Our home was only a few minutes walk away from the spot we saw the UFO up close, and the direction as it flew away was directly above our home. As Leon looked up again at the sky, he swore he saw a distinctive light again, almost like a short, sharp shooting star; perhaps this was the final push out of the atmosphere. It sounds WAY cooler and far more memorable! And if you don’t identify with your birth name any longer, change it and find something that resonates with the new you... Trust me, I’m a Scorpio. I’ve lived many lives in this one already... we are the transformers! Take a name in your spiritual transformation process (but do remember there is a key and relevance in your birth namesake in your spiritual journey). The Power of the Universe After asking the universe (manifesting, calling it into being) for a deep, real conversation about the things I’m passionate about with a stranger, I recently met a fascinating man while we were in Patong, Phuket, for Songkran, the WATER PARTY of the year and the Buddhist New Year in Thailand! When I returned from the washroom Leon was discussing ChatGPT with him and he hadn't tried it out... the first question he asked was 'Explain to me Athenian Democracy' and that says it all. He was a fellow Canadian at that, I rarely have met Canadians in my travels and/or fellow funeral directors (which I ALSO met here at this exact restaurant the day before, but that's a story for another time). He is a backpacker in his late 50s... a world traveler, writer, extremely spiritual & knowledgeable likes to dissect society, technology, politics, space, and quantum, and discuss ‘conspiracy theories’... he knew his ‘stuff’ (the ‘stuff’ that matters to me) he ‘spoke’ my language. All joking aside, I do speak 4 languages! When I finally got around to asking his name (often in travels we just get talking naturally and casually and introductions tend to fall to the wayside) he said ‘Well, I go by Dallas...’ I thought that was an odd way to put it, and it felt impersonal to me. I like to know the depths of people (I'm a Scorpio, we don't do surface level), and his statement felt lingering to me, so following my intuition, I said, “Yes, but what is your ‘birth/real name’?” (which I wouldn’t normally ask!) He said, ‘You know, it’s been so long since I’ve used it I can’t even bring myself to say it out loud...’ and he didn’t say it... But I could tell he thought/felt deeply about it... and I KNOW, as a healer, that was a takeaway for him. A call to heal his namesake wounds... often in lineage/generational patterns and childhood trauma wounds, etc. There’s no escaping the inner works when they come calling for you... And they will at some point in your journey. The Lady in Black The other fascinating thing I find about my name is that, oddly, I have many times in my life been referred to by strangers as ‘the lady in black’. Maybe it's due to the sense of mystery or allure my energy sends out. I remember when Leon and I stayed in Merida, Mexico, in June 2021 at an old Mansion, and the host kept calling me Lady in Black all weekend... for example, he brought a bottle of wine to our room and said, " You're welcome, Lady in Black." That was the weekend that Leon read aloud to me all over the grounds from the Book of Osiris written by a clairaudient that I had found a few days prior at the local bookstore. I paid 60 pesos for it and it is valued at USD 450 (I love books, however, I am no collector, etc, quite the opposite actually, since it's difficult to travel with tangible books). It started with a poem. Not one written for each other, but two lives quietly unfolding on separate sides of the world, linked by shared words and quiet admiration. Jenn and I met on Instagram—two poets writing through grief, growth, and longing. What began as mutual appreciation for each other’s work soon became something more: late-night conversations, voice notes filled with vulnerability, and eventually a leap of faith that changed everything. So much research goes into finding adequate accommodations, places to stay, how to use the transportation systems, what neighborhood is ideal for you to stay in, and whether it meets your monthly budget. Travel by air or train requires using different systems in different languages. Visa costs and length of stay. Finding excursions and affordable food and restaurant costs. Changing costs of living are dependent upon the country. Learning about the cultural customs of the country you are visiting. And… then we do it all again the next month! 2. The Relationships & Connections You Lose May Surprise You (However, There Are More to Gain!) Be wise with your money. Many people will not understand your need or choice to travel the world. You may be surprised by the people you lose as you travel, but remember people can’t help but operate from a self-perspective. If they couldn’t imagine it or think it’s risky or selfish, that is about them, not you. People will miss you and what you bring to their lives. People may say that they will keep in touch, but you may see the video calls become further apart. Time zone differences, busy schedules, and the like can impact things. When you do return home after years or months of travel, you may feel that you no longer fit in, or better yet, that you no longer want to. 3. Make Sure You Can Fund Your Travels NOW Missing our creature comforts of home Social media will lead you to believe that it’s as simple as selling your belongings and hitting the road! With a few steps of setting up a blog, filming a YouTube video , and creating a drop shipping company, you can fund your travels. While these are great options and possibilities, like most things, it takes time and dedication towards things for them to grow and prosper. We suggest that you have a solid financial plan that is stable before considering full-time travel… while we fully believe in leap first and that the universe must respond, we still think practicality is a good complement to this! 4. Can You Let Go of Your Creature Comforts? Jennifer David: A Broad Perspective This one, we think most people assume they can do no problem, and then get surprised by the ebbs and flows of how this comes into play when traveling full-time. Living out of one suitcase (full seasonal wardrobes) is quite the challenge. Especially if you plan to film videos and take many photos …you’ll be wearing much of the same clothing throughout (unless you plan to shop and change often, which is a possibility, but also another expense to keep in mind). It’s really difficult to get things shipped or delivered when you are moving frequently. Many countries' postal systems are not up to par, so it can be very difficult to receive care packages or even online shopping. Snacks and foods you love from home will be missed. Trust us when we say Doritos DO NOT taste the same throughout the world, nor do most of the major fast food chains that you were hoping to have a bite at for a small taste of home. 5. Can You Be Alone or Full-Time Together With Your Travel Person? Spending a lot of time alone or with another person while traveling can easily lead to depression and anxiety, both from loneliness and co-dependency. When traveling solo, you need to remember that you may not speak the language, so communication and friendships can become very difficult. If you fall ill, you won’t have a support system with you. When traveling with a partner, you spend 24/7 together during high-stress times, and it’s not always easy to remain amicable when you are exhausted from travel or trying to overcome an obstacle or language barrier. It’s important to be very mindful of your mental health. Adequate sleep, diet, exercise, and listening to your body are very important. These points are not meant to discourage you from traveling. Traffic is typically pretty hectic at peak hours, and can easily add an hour or two to your journey. Forms available at the Immigration Center include 90 Days Report, Re-Entry, and Extension, but others can be downloaded online. Step 1 – Preparing Your Documents Before heading to Central Festival Mall, gather all required documents to ensure a smooth process. ⪢ Essential Documents ● Passport: Your passport must have a minimum validity of six months. ● Passport-Sized Photo:  Bring a recent passport photo (4x6 cm), though you can also have one taken in the mall. ● Photocopies:  You are required to provide photocopies of both passport pages and your passport photo. You will have time to do this while waiting for line 2. There is a tour desk that offers photocopies for 5 baht. They can also provide a pen (for 5 baht), as each copy needs to be signed and dated. You can get photocopies at the mall. The Tour Desk, located just opposite the immigration center entrance, offers copies for 5 Baht. ● TM.6 Departure Card: The small card stapled in your passport upon entering Thailand. ● TM.30 Notification Form: A form that requires landlords and Airbnb owners to report the stay of non-Thai nationals in their properties. This is required for 90-day reporting and any type of visa extension. ● Visa Extension Application Form: Available at the immigration office; you can fill this out on-site. You can also download this online and complete it before arrival to save time. ● Visa Extension Fee: The standard fee for a tourist visa extension is 1,900 THB. Take a ticket as soon as you arrive and wait for your number to be called. Mornings are usually less crowded, so try to arrive early to avoid a lengthy wait. There are 3 queuing areas: ● Line 1: This is to the left of the main desk, and is where you will receive your number card. Depending on how busy it is, they may also check your paperwork here. ● Line 2: This is the main desk you see, marked 'Document Preparation'. Note that ticket numbers are upheld, and if you cannot skip this stage, even if you are told in line 1 that your documents are ok. This is also where your payment is checked, and your documents clipped together. Note that if you are asked to return after 1 pm, there is no way to skip the line before this, and you can only be seen when your number is called. ● General Waiting Area (3): After your documents and payment are checked, they will then be taken by the staff member to the immigration officers, and you will be moved on to the general waiting area. Here you will await your ticket number. Should your application be going smoothly, your first call will be for a photo, and then after you will be called to receive your passport and paperwork. ⪢ Presenting Your Documents Staff will review everything before processing the extension. Make sure your documents are organized and complete to avoid delays or being turned away. Step 4 – Paying the Visa Extension Fee The visa extension fee for tourists is 1,900 THB. Central Festival Mall offers a variety of amenities, making it easy to pass the time. You can grab a coffee, shop, or relax at one of the seating areas while waiting for your visa to be processed. It is also well air-conditioned, unlike the offices and waiting areas at the airport! There is even a grocery store here, so we typically plan our extension to coincide with an essentials run. CONTENT MENU Common Reasons for Visa Extension Denials While the extension process is generally smooth, there are a few common reasons for denial: ● Incomplete Documents: Missing or improperly filled-out forms will lead to rejection, with no exceptions. ● Incorrect Photo Specifications: Providing the wrong photo size or style may also delay processing. ● Overstays: If you have overstayed your visa without an extension, be prepared to pay additional fines. ● Yearly limit: Officially, there is a 6-month maximum stay out of 12 according to the Thai Government's immigration website, although this appears to be loosely enforced. That being said, there is a chance that this could cause a rejection. Once this step is complete, they will pass on all of the paperwork and your passport to the immigration officers, and you will be moved to the waiting area where your name will be called. If you entered Thailand without a visa under a visa exemption (e.g., for many nationalities, this allows a 30-day stay), you can usually extend this for an additional 30 days at Central Festival. If you entered Thailand with a Tourist Visa (e.g., a 60-day TR), you can typically extend it for another 30 days. Not all visa types can be extended at this location. This restaurant is in the middle of rice paddies, surrounded by mountains, and has a direct view of the lantern release and fireworks events in Doi Saket. Oh, and don't worry, you will get a lantern too! Find a safe spot by the water, light the candle on your Krathong, and let it float gently away. While doing this, make a wish or say a silent prayer. Unfortunately, it has experienced a significant number of accidents involving them specifically, owing to insufficient infrastructure and poor regulation enforcement. The accident rates in Bali can vary year to year but are currently amongst the highest in the world. Sadly we are now part of those statistics, and we want to raise awareness to help you avoid the same situation as us. To put that into perspective, the population of the entire island is just over 4 million! On top of that, the number has been steadily increasing in recent years, as scooters have become the preferred mode of transportation for many people on the island. Scooters are affordable, fuel-efficient, and supposedly easier to maneuver in the congested traffic of Bali . However, they can also be dangerous, as they are often involved in accidents. In 2019, there sadly were over 1,000 people killed in motorcycle accidents alone in Bali. Officially there are over 10,000 accidents involving bikes every year on the island, although the total is believed to be far higher due to a lack of reporting of minor ins. Despite both of us having 20+ years of driving experience, neither of us had ever driven a bike or scooter before. Jenn had the slight upper hand as she had been a passenger many times on them, so that gave us some confidence. For Leon, it is one thing he NEVER thought he would do. They had always been a no-go for him over safety. Be it vans, trucks, or even forklifts, all of those 20 years we had always felt safe on four wheels. As travelers here in Asia , we know of the prominence of scooters and their affordability. We had also done our research surrounding their safety. Bali is notorious for its risks and in hindsight, we should have thought twice before trying it here, given it was our first time. Our quiet countryside residence in Thailand would have been a far better place to practice in hindsight (our Airbnb host offered to let us practice on theirs). But we procrastinated, didn't, and then here we were, ready and willing to join the mass ranks of scooter users in the beautiful area of Ubud . On day one, it went quite well, despite the nerves. On day 2, the day of the accident, we were excited to get back on it initially. It is important to note here that our Airbnb host refused us a bike initially when we told her it would be our first time. Yet when we were in a local restaurant that also rented bikes, we were told it was no problem. Eventually we got ours from a friend of our host, and needless to say, there was not exactly any paperwork or license checks. But from what we understand, that is a fairly common occurrence here. We were not entirely comfortable with it and knew the risks, but we decided to go for it anyway. Little did we know, but that turned out to be a very painful decision. Read on  for details on what happened, information about scooters in Indonesia , and things you can do to stay safe on the roads if you do choose to rent one, and THAT potential law change. CONTENT MENU Our Motorcycle Accident in Bali - How It Happened Only the day before the accident, Leon had posted on Instagram about getting on a scooter for the first time, feeling so proud that he had allayed his lifelong fears to try it. Just look at the advantages too. Highly versatile, easy to rent, and a way of getting through traffic quicker. On top of that, here in Ubud (Bali), you can rent one for less than $4 a day. Win win right? We were fine on the first day, as mentioned earlier, albeit a little nervous and shaky. On Tuesday we were feeling much more confident and super excited, planning our YouTube video for a trip up to the Ceking rice terraces, the famous Bali swing, and whatever else we could find in this jungle paradise. The traffic in Ubud is insane , so we decided to avoid the main route of chaos and take the only other option, the quiet backroads. We were worried about the traffic (ironically), so we thought it would be way easier. But... these roads are tight, bendy, hilly, and congested. We felt OK, it was a 30-minute ride and we were halfway through. It is so hard though; without a sat nav, we could not anticipate the bends. So we were going slow! We were going down a hill (on a particularly narrow stretch) and around a bend when it happened. There was a truck and bike behind us trying to overtake, and then as we got past the blind point of the turn, there was an oncoming truck on the road, and it didn't honk (this is usually standard practice to warn bikes). We had to swerve to dodge them, and then the bike slipped; Leon ended up underneath the bike, and Jenn went over the top. The injuries were bad, and we were both in shock, but thankfully, there was no concussion. The van and bike did not stop, but others did. Someone stopped and moved the bike from the road, and we were offered water too. We walked to a local store a few hundred meters away and called a taxi. We were both super stressed, in shock, and bleeding. Despite the language barrier, the store was incredibly kind, getting us wipes and tissues, and they even recovered the bike from where it was parked for us. We left the bike at the store and arranged for its owner to pick it up. All in all, we had to pay $35 for the damage, and there was no issue with the owner. It all kind of felt normal, just as it did when we walked into the pharmacy on the way back to the Airbnb we were in. We were grateful for this, although it was a sign that perhaps they were used to dealing with this kind of accident. The stats don't lie. We are so thankful it was not worse, with no broken bones, despite the intense pain of our injuries. It sucks as we were in our dream destination and couldn't do anything but rest up. But we are so thankful to be alive! Since it happened, on the few occasions we have had to venture outside, the people have been incredible too. Locals and tourists acknowledge us wherever we go, showing such lovely care and compassion. We honestly have not been able to walk for more than a few minutes without being approached by someone. Everyone has recommended treatment and offered support and advice too. It is humbling, and just goes to show the incredible kindness and compassion that we often forget that most people do have! CONTENT MENU Scooters and Bikes in Indonesia According to the Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas Polri), there were 131 million registered motorcycles in Indonesia as of 2022. This means that approximately 60% of the population of Indonesia uses a motorcycle as their primary mode of transportation. There are several reasons why motorcycles are so popular in Indonesia. First, they are relatively affordable. A new motorcycle can be purchased for as little as $1,000. Second, motorcycles are fuel-efficient. A motorcycle can get up to 50 miles per hour and can save a lot of money on transportation costs. Third, motorcycles are easy to maneuver in the congested traffic of Indonesia. However, the risks associated with using motorcycles in Indonesia are clear; case in point in this post. Motorcycles are involved in a high number of accidents, and the roads in Indonesia are often poorly maintained. Always wear a helmet, try not to go too fast, and keep both hands on the handlebars at all times. And please do not use your phone (unless for sat nav). CONTENT MENU What to Consider to Avoid an Accident on Bali's Roads ⪢ High Accident Rates Scooter and motorbike accidents are a significant cause of injuries and fatalities worldwide. In many countries, including Bali, they account for a large proportion of road traffic accidents. ⪢ Vulnerability Riders of scooters and motorbikes are more exposed to the risk of injury compared to occupants of cars or other enclosed vehicles. The lack of protective barriers increases the likelihood of severe injuries in case of a collision. ⪢ Helmet Usage Wearing a helmet can significantly reduce the risk of head injuries and fatalities in scooter and motorbike accidents. Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, including Bali, helmet usage is not vigorously enforced or practiced consistently mainly by locals. That being said, it is still a legal requirement in Indonesia, and police will pull over tourists without one. ⪢ Road Conditions Uneven road surfaces, potholes, and inadequate infrastructure can contribute to accidents involving scooters and motorcycles. In Bali, where road conditions can be challenging, it's essential to exercise caution and adapt your driving style accordingly. ⪢ Traffic Congestion Bali, like many popular tourist destinations, experiences heavy traffic congestion. This can lead to increased risks for scooter and motorbike riders, such as rear-end collisions and sideswipes. In Ubud , trust us, it is madness out there! ⪢ Inexperienced Riders Scooters and motorbikes are often popular choices for tourists and inexperienced riders due to their affordability and ease of use. Lack of familiarity with local traffic rules and riding in unfamiliar environments can increase the risk of accidents, as it did for us sadly. ⪢ Impaired Driving Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a major contributing factor in scooter and motorbike accidents. It impairs judgment, coordination, and reaction time, making accidents more likely to occur. Besides, it is ILLEGAL. Just don't do it, it is not worth the risk. ⪢ Defensive Driving Practicing defensive driving techniques, such as maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles, using turn signals, and staying alert to potential hazards, can significantly reduce the risk of accidents. If you are not comfortable driving a scooter, consider using Grab or another ride/taxi service in Bali. You can even get bike taxis, which are super affordable and have experienced drivers who know the roads and the ways of the locals. Yes, you may suffer in the chaotic traffic if you do take this option, but after what we've experienced and also heard from others, we would sooner take our time and get to our destination later than take this risk again. That is just us, and we only hope it will not be you!! CONTENT MENU Potential Law Change BANNING Foreigners from Renting Vehicles in Bali Back in mid-March 2023, Bali's Governor Koster made a series of monumental announcements that proposed changes to how foreign tourists travel in Bali. This policy includes digital nomads and ex-pats and effectively bans any non-Indonesian from driving motorcycles, scooters, or cars on the island, irrespective of whether they have an international or even local driving license. “Those tourists have to travel, walk, and use cars to travel. It is no longer allowed to use a motorcycle or anything that is not from a travel agent.” -Governor Koster This is a monumental change for Bali, although it is currently still not written into law. As of now, tourists are ONLY permitted to rent vehicles from authorized agencies. This is particularly interesting as GoJek and Grab services, which are hugely popular, are NOT recognized as formal travel agents. CONTENT MENU What You Need to Rent a Bike in Bali Despite the aforementioned announcement, currently, from what we have seen, there is little change to what has been the status quo in Bali for many years. We compiled the list below before we found out about this new law, and as this post shows, things have yet to change. From what we have seen, no one seems to be aware of it, and bikes and scooters continue to be rented as they are. But be very aware that this may become null and void when the ban comes into full effect. Please check local government sources for up-to-date information before your visit. ⪢ Licenses A driving license is required here in Indonesia, along with an International Drivers Licence which you must get in your home country. Even if your rental company does not ask, carry them on you at all times as if ever you are stopped by the police, they most certainly will. ⪢ Where to Rent One As of March 2023, tourists can only hire a motorcycle from a business that is registered with the relevant trade agencies or the Transportation Renting Association in Bali. While there are hundreds of companies that are part of the TRA in Bali, there are just as many informal operations renting motorcycles to tourists, digital nomads, and ex-pats in Bali. Residents who are not formally registered as members of trade agencies or the transportation renting association are not permitted to rent two-wheeling vehicles to foreign tourists. Unfortunately, we only found this out after our accident! ⪢ Rental Costs This depends on the strength of the scooter itself, but typically prices can range from 70-100k IDR per day for lower-end bikes (110cc, i.e., Scoopy bikes) to 150k IDR per day for bikes at 150cc. Prices may be offered at a discount for long-term rentals. ⪢ Insurance It is important to ensure ownership/registration papers are with the bike at all times, but do not confuse this with insurance. This is not something that will likely be offered to you, so check with your travel insurance (if you have it) to see if you are covered, and the ownership/registration, as it is now required by law. To ensure peace of mind while traveling or living abroad, we recommend getting health insurance. All Balinese villages tend to have roadside fuel stands, marked up in red and blue labels. There are only two options, Bensin or Pertamax, usually located outside of a shopfront, or Warung (a small privately owned restaurant). Bensin is yellow and Pertamax is blue Pertamax is slightly more expensive but has better quality fuel, and is usually the default if you do not specify. Alternatively, you can top up at a Pertamina Gas Station, although this may be more expensive as it is not self-service, as with virtually all petrol stations in Asia. NOTE: You will often find shelves filled with bottles of fuel outside stores, too. Please be careful with this, as from what we have heard, the quality is questionable, it is more expensive, and often watered down. ⪢ Police A good tip is to keep some loose change in your pocket, maybe 80 - 100k IDR. If the police do pull you over, usually they will check your documents. Be warned that you could expect a heavy fine if you are not wearing a helmet, but usually, they are just looking to make you a little nervous and extract a little cash. ⪢ Clothing Most people tend to wear flip-flops/thongs when using bikes, as we did. In hindsight we would strongly recommend closed footwear as foot abrasions are debilitating and very uncomfortable! Long-sleeve tops are also advisable, not just for extra protection if you fall but also to protect from the sun. ⪢ Back Roads As you have read already, the back roads can be very hazardous for bike users here. The roads are hilly, full of twists and turns, narrow and potholed. Visibility is also low on bends due to trees and overgrowth, so take particular care there. We would recommend sticking to the main drag if you are inexperienced. ⪢ Honking Do not be alarmed if people honk at you, this is generally to let you know they are there (as opposed to irritation like in England and Canada ). It is also best practice to honk on turns and blind bends, to alert people and oncoming vehicles. ⪢ Satellite Navigation One of our biggest regrets is not having a phone holder, which we strongly advise after our somber lesson learned. It is not necessarily easy to get lost in a place like Ubud, which does not have many main roads in and out, but a sat nav will help for anticipating bends that are not signposted and can tend to come out of nowhere. CONTENT MENU Our Message on Renting Bikes in Bali This has been such a traumatic experience for us, and we are just so grateful to be here to write this post and share what happened. We do not want to discourage anyone from riding scooters or bikes. While the accident rates are scarily high, it is important to remember that millions of people use them every day, including tourists, and they are fun and exciting. When you look at the statistics, accidents account for less than 1% of the total number of bike users in Bali. You can have a great time riding scooters, and sometimes accidents just happen.
