We knew very little about Cambodia prior to this visit; that has certainly changed now! We saw well over a dozen temples, all of which have stood the test of time and are still glorious and magnificent, despite many years of neglect. The back-breaking, painstaking restoration efforts here can be felt at every temple and it really does have to be seen to be believed. The entire Angkor site is home to over 300 temples, all of which have been rebuilt and opened to the public. But Cambodia and Siem Reap is not just all about its temples and historical Khmer Empire. We also met some amazing people along the way, saw first-hand the awful poverty that blights so much of the population, visited local areas including one of the famous water villages, learnt about the devastating Cambodian Civil War and tried a plethora of different foods. Most places reject them, either for lack of change or suspect notes, so it is best to change it at a bank right away. Many businesses accept Visa or Mastercard but be prepared for contactless not to work, or to be asked for cash (to avoid processing fees). In restaurants, a tip of around 10-15% of the bill is customary if service is not included. Hotel staff, including bellhops and housekeeping, often receive tips of around 50-100 rupees per service. Taxi and auto rickshaw drivers appreciate small tips, and tour guides and drivers usually receive tips at the end of the service, typically 200-500 rupees per day for guides and 100-300 rupees per day for drivers. Porters at transportation hubs may receive 20-50 rupees per bag, and spa or salon services may be tipped 10-15% of the cost if service charges are not included. While India is a beautiful and culturally rich country, it's important to be aware of certain health and safety precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. There are a number of things to consider, especially around sanitization. Depending on your level of accommodation, you may find it common to be without toilet paper, hot water (or even water), or public bathrooms. Particular care should be taken around drinking water, and eating food from safe sources (this is not always the hotel either!) In general India is fairly safe for tourists, however there are some particular challenges with pushy street sellers, hawkers and rickshaw drivers. Especially around genuine prices and taking you where you want to go. ⪢ Safety & Security India is generally safe for tourists, but exercise common sense precautions. Keep an eye on your belongings, avoid displaying valuables, and be cautious in crowded places to prevent petty theft. It is very important to be aware of scams, in particular the classic 'distraction' technique of things like asking for photos to preoccupy you. It is not recommended to go out at night as street lighting is very sparse, and even in big cities, sidewalks / pavements are not common. The roads can be pretty chaotic for traffic, so even during the day it is important to take good care and constantly be aware of what is happening around you. While India is a safe destination for female travelers, women should take precautions like dressing modestly, avoiding traveling alone late at night, and being aware of their surroundings. It is not uncommon to b e stared at by men for long periods of time, although generally most seem more curious than anything else. To protect yourself from mosquito bites and reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases, use mosquito repellent containing DEET or picaridin, wear long-sleeved clothing and pants, and consider using bed nets treated with insect repellent when sleeping. Stay indoors during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, and ensure your accommodations have screens on doors and windows. Remove stagnant water around your living area, consult a healthcare professional for vaccinations and medications, and consider treating clothing with permethrin. Staying informed about local health advisories is essential, and taking these precautions can help ensure a more mosquito-safe trip in India. ⪢ Tourist Areas Many popular tourist areas in India, especially major cities and well-known destinations, are generally safe for travellers. These areas have a visible police presence and are accustomed to welcoming tourists. There is a distinct lack of suitable public facilities such as bathroom or garbage cans, so do be prepared for that. Also while tourist areas seem to be a bit cleaner, there is a distinct lack of public sanitation that you will certainly see on the streets of India. ⪢ Food and Water Be very cautious about what you eat and drink. Stick to bottled or purified water and avoid consuming tap water or ice cubes. Also be careful to check the seal on any bottles you are given or buy, and make sure it is still intact. Take the same care with showers, be careful not to get any water in your mouth and do not use tap water for brushing teeth. Be mindful if the water smells foul. Exercise high care when eating street food; choose vendors that appear clean and have a high turnover of customers. Ensure that cooked food is served hot and avoid raw or undercooked seafood and meats. It is also a good idea to carry hand sanitizer or wet wipes for situations where soap and water are not readily available. Maintain good personal hygiene, including regular handwashing with soap and clean water, especially before meals and after using the restroom. ⪢ Natural Hazards Be aware of potential natural hazards, such as monsoon rains, flooding, and landslides, especially during the monsoon season (June to September). ⪢ Driving & road safety Be cautious when using local transportation, especially in densely populated areas with heavy traffic. We would highly recommend using a ride sharing app like Uber, although be prepared for cars to not often be the same as described. There is much to be aware of when traversing India's roads. Cows and dogs are are very common in both urban and rural areas. You will also fins a multitude of different vehicles on India's roads, including rickshaws, horse and carriages, buses, vans, cars and trucks. There are very few pavements or sidewalks, and typically there is a lot of dirt, dust and uneven surfaces. Foreigners are unable to rent cars here, and are advised to use rickshaws or taxis, and avoid walking for long distances. It's important to note that conditions can change, and staying informed about the latest travel advisories and local developments is crucial. Additionally, practicing common-sense safety measures, respecting local customs, and being aware of your surroundings can greatly contribute to a safe and enjoyable travel experience in the India. For certain types of visas, you may need additional documents, such as a letter of invitation from an Indian host or a letter from your employer. You will need to detail flights in and out, accomodation, travel plans, family contacts and more. ⪢ Visa Processing Time Visa processing times can vary, so it's advisable to apply well in advance of your planned travel dates. e-visas can take 2-3 days to process in some cases. ⪢ Visa Validity Visa validity and the duration of stay allowed can vary based on the type of visa issued and your nationality. Check your visa carefully to understand its terms. If you have applied for an e-visa, note that the dates stated on the visa denote the validity of the visa, not the entry dates. The time you are granted starts from when you arrive in the country (within those dates). YouTube was a foreign concept, and while Jenn had excellent blogging experience, Leon did not. Couple that with a dream to travel, but not much of a plan beyond six months, and it almost became like an extended holiday. That all being said, it was an 'extended' holiday of a lifetime that we spent in the marvel that is Mexico. It was towards the end of that holiday, that we began to consider other ways of earning cash to support our journey online. We started teaching English online to supplement our income, and that all kind of halted the savings splurge. Selling all of your worldly possessions is one thing, but it certainly is not a sustainable resource if you do not add to it! So while the teaching helped, it was time and energy consuming, and was starting to feel like the 9-5 lifestyle we had so willingly vanquished to see the world. We had to look beyond Mexico, and answer deep questions about what we wanted to achieve here. Do we just want to live in cheaper countries? What do we do with all of the amazing places and sights we are seeing? It was answering these very questions that led us to YouTube, blogging, and ultimately Closer Lives. With our blogging and website development experience, we were able to build this website alone, albeit with the help from Wix! After four years of traveling and research Closer Lives has manifested into a travel blog, store, and poetry site with over 200k article views. Maybe miniscule compared to others, but we are still blown away that so many people have come to our site and hopefully, with our hand and our hearts, have been able to take away something useful, helpful, or even inspirational. We are growing with Closer Lives and Jenn & Leon over on YouTube, and together with 25k followers combined on Instagram we are continuing to learn, travel and grow with this lifestyle. In 2023, we saw some wonderful growth on YouTube, rapidly topping 1 million overall views and ending the year with over 10k subscribers (we started with 1k). As of 2025 we are at 14k! We aim to reach 100 countries around the globe and will video, photo, and document all that we can to deliver the best blogs and vlogs out there. We really needed to pick up some fresh clothes and get a hair cut before we go truly exploring this BIG, BEAUTIFUL, DIVERSE city of JAKARTA! We checked into our hotel The Holiday Inn and Suites in the KOTA TUA area also known as the electrical district which has the most electronic shops we've ever seen in one area! When we woke in the morning we noticed that there was a movie crew set up at the swimming pool of the hotel and realized they were filming a scene for season 2 of a korean drama called BESTIE! What a way to start the day! We made our way up to the SCBD area to check out the GRAND INDONESIA Mall and it did NOT disappoint! Leon got a haircut and we bought a few things. We even found something that we have been searching for and couldn't find any where else in world! We both (but especially Leon) were super excited! You'll have to watch to see what it is! And we also had the pleasure fo seeing a McLaren at the mall! We then made our way back to the hotel and back out to explore the local CHINATOWN area in GLODOK since it was just walking distance from the hotel! We were hoping to find the big food market in the area but we couldn't find it but we were happy to explore the area and we found some great things to buy there too! Jenn was happy with the outfits she found! After exploring the area we returned to the hotel and had a nice surprise waiting for us! We took a walk to the City Walk which is attached to the hotel and has a great assortment of food and also street food type options but indoors! Very cool! Join us as we explore Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), a recreational park and museum in Jakarta. Although our scooter accident in Bali limited our exploration, we couldn't resist learning about Indonesian culture and preparing for our return trip to Java and the rest of Indonesia in late September. Despite some renovations and closed exhibits, the park provided a fascinating glimpse into the country. Watch as we take a cable car ride and enjoy cultural performances. We didn’t realize just how large Indonesia really is until we started exploring! With over 17,000 islands to explore, it’s the largest archipelago in the world! And we quickly realized that we definitely need to return to Indonesia for some extensive exploration! Indonesia is also the 4th most populated country in THE WORLD! While we were in Bali, Indonesia we had a scooter accident so we weren’t able to learn about BALI and KALIMANTAN/BORNEO or explore as much as we would have liked to. So after many suggestions from the people of JAVA and JAKARTA we thought a visit to the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (otherwise known as TMII) a recreational park and museum while here in Jakarta was a great option so that we are prepared with cultural knowledge of the diverse people and places of Indonesia with a plan for our return visit (of course to explore more of JAVA and ALL Indonesia) in late September. The entrance fee to the park was 25,000 Rp each. It was difficult to find any information really and we were slightly confused as to where to go and what to do as most centers were closed for renovation at our time of visit and there was little to no signage to help guide us. We were also disappointed as the museum itself was also closed for renovations and we found this rather odd as it was a holiday time in the city! Other things to note that an additional entrance cost ranging from 10,000 -25,000 Rp is charged for the exhibits that are open. We decided to take a ride on the cable car which gave us an excellent view of the entire park and was a solid loop with no on or off’s allowed. We can see how this park will be really nice once it’s renovations are complete and it is an excellent way to learn about the country in a fun way that is suitable for the entire family. While we waited for the cable car we play and interactive game with you the viewers which is a lot of fun! Be sure to watch the video to see if you can win! We try but FAIL at using the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) a high-quality bus-based transit system that delivers fast, comfortable, and cost-effective services at metro-level capacities. Bus rapid transit (Busway, BRT, BRTS) is a mass transit system and is bus-based. You can usually pick up bus cards at the local Indomaret but the one close to our hotel The Holiday Inn and Suites didn’t actually sell them they are only available at select locations so we decided to use GRAB once again! The Jakarta History Museum is situated in the heart of Jakarta's historic Old Town, also known as Kota Tua.
