- What the HECK is 'Grombre' Hair and WHY Are SO Many People Embracing It?
A new movement is emerging - one that challenges the conventional norms of hair color and celebrates the natural beauty of gray hair. Also, a process many people choose to go through to get to their beautiful, natural silver hair. Enter "grombre," a term that's been making waves in the realm of hair care and self-expression . But what exactly is grombre , and why is it gaining traction among people of all ages and backgrounds all around the globe? In This Post... ● What the Heck is Grombre Hair? ● The Rise of Grombre ● Embracing Authenticity ● The Power of Representation ● Embracing Grombre Grey Hair Resources ● Recommended Products ● Embracing the Silver Lining ● Jennifer David on Closer Lives What the Heck is Grombre Hair? At first glance, the term "grombre" might sound like a curious blend of words. But in reality, it's a clever fusion of "gray" and "ombre ," two elements that are key to understanding this phenomenon. ⪢ Gray/Grey Traditionally associated with aging, gray hair has often been viewed as something to be covered up or concealed . However, the grombre movement challenges this notion, encouraging individuals to embrace their natural gray hair as a symbol of authenticity and self-acceptance . ⪢ Ombre A popular hair coloring technique characterized by a gradual transition from darker roots to lighter ends, ombre typically involves dyeing hair in shades of brown, blonde, or even vibrant colors. In the context of grombre, the term refers to the natural progression from one's original hair color to shades of gray or silver . Many, if not most, people go through this process when they decide to ditch the hair dye and naturally embrace their grey hair . The process entails naturally allowing your hair to grow out, no longer dyeing your hair. Some people do this only until they can cut it to a length suitable for them. Others, like myself, desire to maintain their length and let the grow-out process progress until the hair is completely grown out or cut away. So although this is often a temporary process, and look , temporary can often mean YEARS with a multitude of different lengths in the balance of the old and new hair throughout the process. The Rise of Grombre The grombre movement didn't emerge overnight; rather, it's the culmination of a cultural shift towards greater acceptance of diverse beauty standards and a rejection of ageism and the idea that grey hair equals old or aging in the beauty industry. Social media platforms like Instagram have played a pivotal role in amplifying the voices of grey hair advocates , like myself, who proudly share photos of their silver locks alongside messages of self-love and empowerment in attempts to normalize grey hair at all ages and phases of life. Embracing Authenticity At its core, grombre is about more than just hair - it's a symbol of embracing authenticity and rejecting societal pressures to conform to narrow standards of beauty . By embracing their natural gray hair, individuals are reclaiming ownership of their appearance and celebrating the unique journey that has led them to this point. They also choose to go through a process that they know can be challenging yet rewarding in so many different ways. The Power of Representation One of the most powerful aspects of the grombre movement is its role in promoting representation and diversity in the beauty industry. By showcasing a wide range of hair colors and textures, grombre advocates are challenging the notion that beauty is synonymous with youthfulness and that grey hair equals old, encouraging others to embrace their unique features. The grombre movement serves as a powerful reminder that beauty comes in many forms. Whether you're rocking a full head of silver strands or just beginning to notice a few gray hairs, embracing your natural hair color is an act of self-love and empowerment. Grombre not only teaches us about self-acceptance, as it is a temporary process for most of us , but it also serves as the natural progression to a full grey hair transformation. This way of going grey also reminds us that positive, healthy changes can take time and patience. It also helps with the dialogue in our daily lives. Often thrusting us into advocacy and conversations with others, even when we weren't prepared for all of that. Because many people will be vocal about their thoughts and opinions on grey hair and aging, we get questioned about the choices and decisions we've made when ditching the hair dye and the whys. It can become quite evident early on that we will have to be strong in our decisions when sporting a grombre look because people have so many questions. The grombre look creates curiosity and questioning in others that the advocacy happens whether you want it to or not! Embracing Grombre So here's to grombre and here’s to those choosing to rock one : a celebration of gray, a testament to authenticity, and a reminder that beauty knows no age. Because grey hair starts as young as the late teens and early twenties, which we still don’t seem to realize because we have been taught by society to hide it unless you are OLD , like REALLY OLD . Is it any wonder why we, as a society, have equated silver hair with age? It’s only after decades of dyeing and hiding our white hair that women are finally saying ENOUGH to dyeing their hair and being exhausted from spending so much money, time, and life energy trying to hide it. But not anymore. We are changing the narrative, and for many of us, it starts with the grombre. We’ve had enough, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to see so many people embracing their natural hair even as early as their late teens and early twenties. It's always easier when it's in fashion or a trend, but this opens up the world to more profound and longer-term acceptance in the movement. We'll take what we can get! Through my growth, I've discovered a refreshed sense of courage, confidence, and self-love , and I'm proud to advocate for a movement that celebrates the beauty of authenticity . For me this is one of the final steps in a physical representation demonstrating what I have embraced inwardly for a very long time. Authentically accepting the fullness of me. And for many others, it's one of the first steps to this ! Have you ever thought about ditching the dye and giving the natural grombre a try? Now is a great time to do it while grey hair and natural hair are all the trend! But that is a blog post for another day. Grey Hair Blog Follow Jennifer David’s empowering journey of going grey and choosing authenticity over approval. A celebration of ageing boldly, living unfiltered, and embracing the silver within. - Why We’ve Decided to Quit Etsy: Behind the Scenes of Our Small Business Shift
It's with a mix of emotions that we are stepping away from Etsy after two years. The platform offered a fantastic launchpad for our products. Still, after careful consideration and a heap of frustrations, we have decided to pursue a different path for our store, Closer Lives Emporium. In this post , we share the many reasons behind our decision and our major concerns with the platform. Things that drove a massive 32% drop in Etsy's stock price in 2023, other sellers leaving in droves, and the tripling of Etsy's seller fees. Not to mention the hugely controversial Etsy reserve fiasco. What did we learn on Etsy, and what exciting things do we see coming next? Read on to find out! In This Post... ● What is Etsy? ● How is Etsy Performing? ● Why We Choose Etsy ● Journey to 300 Products ● Understanding the SEO ● The Importance of Branding See More... ● The Etsy Ads Disaster ● Etsy's Direction ● Crazy Etsy Charges ● Time vs Effort ● Competition – How Tough Is It? ● The Infamous 'Reserve' Debacle ● Poor Store Customization ● Time to Quit ● Benefits of Your Site ● The Future ● Social Media Tips & Insights First Things First, What is Etsy? Etsy is an online marketplace that caters to those who appreciate unique and handcrafted items. It's a popular destination for people looking to support independent sellers and artists from all over the world. The platform offers a wide range of products, from jewelry and clothing to home decor and art. If you're looking for something special and bespoke, Etsy is a great place to browse. Imagine Etsy as a giant online version of a craft fair. Here, you'll find a vast selection of handmade and vintage items created by independent sellers. This means you're directly supporting creative individuals who put their heart and soul into their work. So if you're looking for a one-of-a-kind piece or a gift with a personal touch, Etsy is worth checking out. ⪢ Drop Shipping and Print-on-Demand In addition to handcrafted items, Etsy is also a platform that is an outlet for the masses of drop-shippers and print-on-demand companies who have exploded onto the scene in recent years. Drop-shipping and print-on-demand (POD) companies like Printify are fulfillment models that allow you to sell products online without holding any inventory. With drop-shipping, you partner with a supplier who stores and ships products directly to your customers after you make a sale. POD takes it a step further - you design custom products (like t-shirts or mugs) and the POD provider prints them on demand only when someone orders, handling the fulfillment for you. Both models free you up from managing stock and allow you to test out a wider range of products without upfront investment. How is Etsy Performing? In Q4 2023, Etsy reached 7.9 million active sellers, with a year-over-year growth of 3.8%. One reason why selling on Etsy can be profitable is the growing number of buyers on the platform. According to Etsy, the number of active buyers went up by 3.4% to 97.3 million. This shows that Etsy is becoming a bigger market where sellers can make good money. In 2023, Etsy’s consolidated Gross Merchandise Sales (GMS) decreased slightly to $13.16 billion from $13.32 billion in 2022, with a 1.2% decrease. However, annual consolidated revenue notably increased, reaching $2.75 billion, marking a 7.1% YoY increase from $2.57 billion in 2022. Particularly noteworthy is the fourth quarter performance, where revenue marks a new record of $842.2 million, a 4.3% increase compared to Q4 2022, highlighting Etsy’s ongoing strength and resilience. In February 2024, Etsy received 474.1 million visits, according to the web traffic collected by Similarweb . This number has made Etsy the 4th player in the Marketplace and Shopping category, only after Amazon, eBay, and Walmart. Source: https://www.fool.com/ Despite this 'increase', 2023 was not such a good year for the platform when you drill down into the numbers. While its revenue seems to have grown, actual sales on Etsy have stalled. On Etsy, the money from sales goes directly to the millions of sellers on the platform, not Etsy itself. Etsy makes its money by charging sellers fees for various services they use to list and sell their products. Here's the interesting part: Even though Etsy's revenue has increased from a very aggressive seller fee strategy to counter losses, the total amount of sales on the platform (called Gross Merchandise Sales or GMS) has dipped. This means sellers are making less money overall. This trend worried investors in 2023, and it's why Etsy took action. In December of that year, they announced they were laying off 11% of their staff to focus on initiatives that would help sellers grow their sales on the platform. Initiatives which we will look at throughout this post. Funnily enough, they do not seem to be helping one bit. Why We Choose Etsy for Closer Lives Emporium Fresh into our full-time travel adventure and with an eye on not depleting our savings too much, we started looking around for some serious ways to earn on the go. Etsy was by no means our only option, as we were already teaching English online when we decided to give it a try. That being said, we liked the idea of earning money without having to do much; it kind of seemed too good to be true! We were inspired by many hours of researching YouTubers and successful entrepreneurs who were sharing their Etsy success stories. Some were demonstrating hundreds of thousands of sales on POD items, in particular tees. With plenty of creative ideas as content creators on social media, we sensed an opportunity for us too. If they could do it, why couldn't we? At the time, we were establishing this website, which was born from Closer Lives Poetry on Instagram, a community page which Jenn had founded. Closer Lives was intended to be a Creator Academy initially, to expand the concept beyond the confines of IG at the time. With very little experience in website building, establishing our POD range on Closer Lives did not seem like the best idea, given the fact it would take some time to garner domain authority, and we wanted to start earning straight away. So familiar with the brand and prowess of Etsy, it seemed like the perfect spot to build. And so, Closer Lives Emporium was born. The Journey to 300 Products We started creating our range in Merida, Mexico (of all places). We had a super cute Airbnb in the middle of a quiet urban sector of the city. It was a good spot to relax and get creative, and once we got started, our range just exploded! There are a few platforms you can try for POD services, the main one being printify.com . We set up an account with both but opted to use Printify more as it felt a little more user-friendly, and it synchronized with Etsy pretty seamlessly. For those who may not know, POD companies usually have tie-ups with big players like Etsy and Shopify, whereby the products you create are uploaded directly to the respective selling platform. Any time a product sells, the order automatically generates in the POD platform, and aside from some customer service, should you so choose, the process is entirely automated from the point of order to the customer receiving the goods. There are some nuances and processes you can put in place, like manually authorizing orders, sending thank you emails, and such, but even postal tracking is automated so you don't have to. All this takes a little bit of work to set up and get right, but once you have it done, you can sit back and earn money in your sleep, as they say. We kind of lost track of how many items we were creating at one point; if anything, we were just having fun with it. We quickly made it to over 100 products, and before we knew it, we hit over 300 across 17 categories. Woah!!! Understanding the SEO: Product Descriptions, alt tags, Size Charts, etc. Mistakes Spell a Time-Consuming Disaster! One of the biggest challenges was marketing the products, which goes far beyond just making it and sticking it on your Etsy storefront. There are things like flat-lays, descriptions, alt tags, getting the title right, terms and conditions, refund policies, privacy policies, size charts, fulfillment times, actual delivery times, etc. Say what now? We thought this was going to be easy! Such things are not exactly talked about when people share their glossy charts advertising thousands of sales. This was exactly where time started to become a factor. Creating a ton of designs, popping them onto a product template, and pressing 'publish' is honestly the easy part. Getting these items on the virtual shelf properly is another matter entirely. Especially if you don't know what you're doing, and make some critical mistakes along the way. Let's give you an example. Alt tags. Yes, alt tags. You may have heard of them, and in the past year or so, they have grown into the conversation so much so that you can even see them given as an option for you in your Instagram posts. An alt tag is a hidden description for an image on a webpage, helping visually impaired people understand the image. It also provides backup text if the image fails to load, but perhaps most crucially, improves search engine ranking . And search engine ranking is a biggie. Like the biggest, actually. Funnily enough, alt tags weren't a thing on Etsy. When we started in 2021, they weren't prevalent at all. So we did not make them. Just as we did not make size chart thumbnails for our items, or fulfillment information graphics. A BIG mistake we had no clue we were making. Let us tell you that when you have 300 items, and realize you need to update them all with critical things like size chart graphics, it is hours of work . Then Etsy comes along and hits you with alt tags. Then you realize you aren't making sales potentially because of these issues. Then the panic sets in when you realize on average each of your items has at least 10 photos, which means potentially 3000 alt tags. Say what now? So hopefully we can paint the picture now! After all of our initial hype of getting things onto Etsy, we knew our shop was always going to struggle without some serious time being put into the background. SEO-effective product titles and descriptions were not something we did before uploading the item from Printify. They were just generic. We had to design a whole bunch of things like our size charts and product flat-lays. Then upload those and figure out how the hell to write a good alt tag, let alone 3000 of them. Weeks and months passed before we were finally able to get things done. Let us tell you, those weeks and months are measured in actual time spent , or at least it certainly feels like it looking back. The Importance of Branding So things were starting to move, and after the rough months at the beginning, we were starting to learn a lot and were making some serious progress on getting our listings up to scratch. We could see the difference it was making, too, picking up some sales here or there, and getting excited about the prospects. Our product wall was looking better by the day, and our products themselves were looking professional and organized. One of the key elements to this was our branding, something we took great care to curate right from the off. Again, we were very inexperienced with this kind of thing and quickly found out why people pay big bucks for logo designers and high-performance graphics. Just so you know, Canva is great and all, but it is very limiting when it comes to logos. We never did end up paying big bucks, but then again, the offset against changing our logo several times, and having issues with pixelation and poor quality, perhaps we should have done so in hindsight. The crux of the branding comes in with all of the 'peripheral' stuff that the big drop-shippers do not tell you about. Those fulfillment charts and delivery info charts are very important. A brand is more than just a flashy logo; it is in the details, the way you market your products, the follow-up emails, and the terms and conditions. These things can make or break a business and are often sidelined in the short-term pursuit of mega bucks. Fortunately, with our business experience, we did particularly well in this area, but again, that dreaded time count was adding up. Yet more hours, days, and weeks to get it spot on! The Etsy Ads Disaster So, at the point in our journey where we finally felt like our store was how we wanted it, in terms of all of the above, we were still struggling to hit consistent sales. We had got over the 20 mark, which had felt like quite a lot of work for not really that much. With all of the effort we had put into getting the descriptions, titles, and alt tags right, we were hoping for far more return than that. With our reach pretty low, and our confidence in our products pretty high, we concluded that we should invest some cash into the store. Now, sure, time is money, so the months of work it had taken to get to this point should always be considered as an investment, but we are talking cold hard bucks in the system. We were averaging about ten visitors a day to our store, and simple logic told us that this was never going to be enough to take off. Besides, Etsy is obsessed with pushing its advertising-to-sales potential at you, so we decided to bite. And wait for the sales to roll in. This is where our frustration with the platform started to kick in. Now, you might think that paying some money for a bigger slice of the reach pie might automatically boost your profits. But with Etsy, this is a big no-no. ⪢ Etsy Ads Offers Two Ways to Promote Your Products to a Wider Audience on Etsy and Beyond: ● Onsite Ads: These work on a cost-per-click (CPC) basis. You set a daily budget, and Etsy will display your ads in various locations throughout the Etsy platform, like search results or product pages. You only pay when someone clicks on your ad, not when they just see it. ● Offsite Ads: This is a commission-based advertising program. Etsy automatically enrolls all sellers and displays your product listings on other platforms like Google, Pinterest, or Instagram. You only pay a commission (12-15% of the sale price) if someone clicks on your ad and then makes a purchase within 30 days. Funnily enough, it seemed like every ad-based sale we were making was coming from 'offsite ads'. So we were losing 12-15% every time. Not to mention the taxes on top (which we will get into later). Now the average margin on your items, especially if you want to remain competitive and soak up the delivery charge, might only be 20%. Take away Etsy ad fees, taxes, and Etsy listing fees, and yes folks, you are losing money. Sadly for us, at least 80% of our sales were barely breaking even. Before we even factored the time spent on creating the damn things. Etsy's cut was easily approaching 25-30% with offsite ads factored in, and without them, the chances of selling through onsite ads were zero. We quickly realized that Etsy was starting to demonstrate itself as a little bit of a scam. With the platform raking in billions, where on earth was the support for the sellers that make it? 25%? Mad. ⪢ Was There Even a Good Reach? In all fairness, the reach on Etsy ads did seem okay. We saw an uptick of around 100 visitors a day to our store at one point, although that cost us a cool $130 in a month before we cut it off. It just was not worth it with the offset against sales barely breaking even. A shortage of actual buyers on the platform? Or were our products just not good enough? An argument for the latter, although we had sold at least one across 30% of our range. Deep down we just knew the exposure was not good enough. Etsy's Direction... Too Concerned with Updates and Apps With the amount of money Etsy was charging us for listings and ads, we were wondering if there was going to be some sort of major investment in the system to boost reach or something. Yes, we know that is wishful thinking, but at this point, we have put way too much work into it to simply give up. We turned the ads on and then off, then on again, desperately hoping they would spur the organic reach we craved. A few sales trickled in, we lost money, and we eventually decided to keep them off. In 2022, it felt like the money was going into constant updates and tweaks. A whole new app to replace one that was not broken, a slew of changes to product features and parameters (which meant yet another 300 changes), and then one of the most frustrating of all, an enforced delivery lead-time update, which led to another 300 changes. There were plenty of others besides, and we seemed to be spending far more time catering to the platform than sending out 'thank you for your custom' emails. Sales were few and far between, but the time demanded was off the charts. In the past two years (roughly April 2022 - April 2024), Etsy has implemented several changes to improve the platform for both sellers and buyers. There have been adjustments to fee structures, though, as ever with Etsy, the specifics are ridiculously complex. After major seller backlash campaigns in the past few years, Etsy has made efforts to improve search algorithms and introduce new features to help buyers discover unique products. This involved better filtering options or promoting (apparently) high-quality listings. There have also been updates to the offsite ads program, such as offering sellers more control over their ad placements and budgets. Honestly, it is all company bluster to keep us going and paying our fees. Sadly, hardly any of it has worked. Crazy Etsy Charges The crazy Etsy charges. The crazy Etsy statements. It is one of the worst parts of the platform. Even to this day, we still cannot make sense of the chaos. Etsy provides a monthly statement, and on it is a barrage of costs that no amount of terms and conditions can understand! For example, we sold a pair of green sneakers and a pair of brown sneakers. 2 items, that's it, that's all. On Etsy's statement - TWENTY separate charges. Yes, 20! Let's give you more of an idea: The sale of the two pairs of sneakers came to $74.08 (CAD) . Charges applied by Etsy (we have added both charges together, but they are all separately placed on your statement, for each item, just to confuse you): ● Bill for Click-Throughs: $2.65 ● VAT on Etsy Ads: $0.53 ● Listing Fee: $0.27 ● VAT Auto-Renew Sold: $0.10 ● Processing Fee: $3.21 ● VAT on Processing Fee: $1.28 ● Sales Tax Paid by Buyer: $9.70 ● Transaction Fee: $9.24 ● Regulatory Operating Fee: $0.36 ● VAT on Transaction: $1.84 TOTAL: $29.18 So, given that our profit margin on both pairs of sneakers is $36, that leaves us with $6. Raising prices is not an option as we are trying to stay competitive with others in the market... given all of the work involved in launching the product, $6 is not a lot. And the more money thrown at advertising for no returns equals a loss, sadly. ⪢ Oh, and the Listing Fees... We were aware of the listing fees before joining, however, it is another expense that can seem to sneak up on you without you realizing it. Every item comes with an initial listing fee, which renews every 4 months, and also is charged on each sale. While 27 cents might not seem a lot, when you factor in 300 products, it starts to add up and eat into the margins. Time vs Effort - Is It Worth It? Now none of this is to say all is completely at a loss. From what we understand, for drop-shippers, Etsy is all about volume. If you can sell a thousand sneakers, that becomes a $6000 profit. But the offshoot is that you simply cannot reach volume without Etsy ads, and Etsy ads are unsustainable and unprofitable. It is all geared towards raking in money for the platform, leaving the sellers with nothing but years of hard work with little to show for it. It is not worth it in our opinion. Maybe a few years ago in the early days of Etsy, it was, but in this day and age, it is a false economy. It all feels a little like working for a public company where you bust a gut for minimum wage while the fat cats at the top flood their paychecks with millions of dollars. And you can bet they aren't working nearly as hard. Etsy works on the same principle, and we decided we were no longer going to fall for it! Competition – How Tough Is It? The competition on Etsy can be quite tough, as we have already mentioned, but it also depends on several factors: ⪢ Saturation Certain niches on Etsy (like printed tees) are highly saturated, meaning many sellers are offering similar products. This can make it challenging for new shops to stand out, especially for popular items like clothing or travel accessories (like ours). ⪢ Search Ranking Etsy's search algorithm plays a big role in determining which shops appear first in search results. Understanding SEO principles and optimizing your listings with relevant keywords is crucial for getting your products seen, according to Etsy, but by no means guaranteed. In our experience, the big accounts gobble up about 90%, leaving the remaining 10% feeding off of the scraps. Ok, we cannot back up those numbers, but it certainly felt like that in the 2 years we went at it. ⪢ Product Differentiation What makes your products unique? Do you offer a special design element, use high-quality materials, or cater to a specific niche within a broader category? Standing out from the crowd is essential for attracting customers. That is what the Etsy 'experts' tell you anyway. Thumbnails are crucial, as are titles, but that takes time and money (Canva Pro or flat-lay app subscriptions for example). All while eating into the little-to-no profit margins you have. ⪢ Marketing & Branding Successful Etsy shops often invest in marketing their products beyond just the Etsy platform. This could involve social media promotion, influencer partnerships, or running targeted ads. Building a strong brand identity also helps you resonate with potential customers. Again, this all costs a lot of time and money and can be very draining. It is a hard slog, with absolutely no guarantees. Especially when you are fighting against millions of others. The Infamous Etsy 'Reserve' Debacle The Etsy "reserve" debacle refers to a policy change implemented in 2021 that caused significant frustration among many sellers. Here's a breakdown of what happened: ⪢ The Policy Etsy introduced a system where they could withhold a portion (usually 75%, yes 75%! ) of sellers' funds in a reserve account. This meant sellers wouldn't have immediate access to the full amount from their sales. ⪢ Reasons for the Reserve The purpose, according to Etsy, was to protect the platform and buyers from potential fraud. They would hold the reserve until specific criteria were met, such as the order being shipped with tracking or a certain timeframe passing (typically 45 days). ⪢ Sellers' Frustration Several aspects of the policy caused major problems for sellers, with the lack of transparency quite shocking. Many sellers felt Etsy wasn't clear about why their funds were being placed in reserve, making it difficult to address the issue. ⪢ Cash Flow Impact Holding a significant portion of funds could strain a seller's cash flow, especially for those who rely on Etsy income to purchase materials or cover other business expenses. ⪢ Impact on New Shops New shops (like us at the time), which are more susceptible to being flagged for reserve due to limited sales history, could find it challenging to gain momentum if their earnings are restricted. ⪢ Aftermath The policy received significant pushback from the seller community, with many voicing their concerns online and through petitions and boycotts. While Etsy has made adjustments to the policy since its initial implementation, the "reserve" debacle remains a point of contention for many sellers. This shambolic policy was not quite the final straw when it was first implemented, but coupled with the insane charges, constant changes to the platform, the awful ad program, and terrible reach, we were getting there. Poor Store Customization Another major source of frustration for us came with the lack of customization for our storefront, which honestly is pretty poor given the amount of changes Etsy loves to implement practically anywhere else. For example, items sold always go to the number 1 spot in the feed, which means if you have a layout aesthetic, you are constantly reorganizing it. And the re-organization process sucks and is very time-consuming. The store banner is a nightmare, has poor rendering, and is a pain to size correctly. You can get additional layout options, but of course, you must pay monthly for the privilege. The product layouts cannot be customized, and it is very difficult to showcase your brand beyond the small profile picture. These are just a few frustrations, there are plenty more plastered all over the internet. Very disappointing for Etsy, given how much money it is extracting from its sellers. The Turning Point: We QUIT ETSY and Move to Closer Lives So what was the straw that broke the camel's back? Well, in all honesty, it was our website, THIS website, which did it. Up until mid-2023, our website had taken a bit of a back seat to Etsy, our travels, teaching English online, and YouTube. We had started it as a creator academy, abandoned that, and then started to blog a little. But with limited time and uncertainty as to how to monetize, it just was not a priority. After experiencing a dramatic rise and surpassing monetization on YouTube while in Jakarta in 2023, we knew that our website was an opportunity we could no longer avoid. We had blogged a little up until that point, but the design and usability were poor, and it was not bringing in any cash. We were nervous about throwing time at it, as we were concerned that it would be another Etsy situation. A whole lot of work for no payout. Well, we were very happy to be proved wrong on that front! After some serious research, again, that good old time , and some big blogs, we completely overhauled Closer Lives. It has been 6 months of major reconstruction and we are now seeing tangible results; increased ad revenues, over ten thousand visitors a month, and even store sales. Our brand, our OWN money, and a GENUINE COMMUNITY that we could never replicate on Etsy. The decision was made. Time to go it alone! The Benefits of Building Your Site Building your website and online store offers several advantages compared to selling on platforms like Etsy; here are just a few reasons and things to consider: ⪢ Greater Control & Branding You have complete control over the design, layout, and branding of your online store. This allows you to create a unique shopping experience that reflects your brand identity and resonates with your target audience. On Etsy, your shop operates within a larger platform with a pre-determined layout and branding elements. ⪢ Lower Fees While website building and hosting come with costs, you typically avoid the transaction fees and listing fees associated with marketplaces like Etsy. In the long run, this can lead to significant savings, especially for businesses with high sales volume. ⪢ Customer Data Ownership When you run your store, you collect customer data directly, allowing you to build targeted email marketing campaigns and gain valuable insights into your customer base. On Etsy, customer data belongs to the platform, limiting your marketing options. ⪢ Flexibility & Customization With your website, you have the freedom to customize the functionality of your online store. This could involve adding features like loyalty programs, subscription boxes, or personalized product recommendations, which might not be readily available on marketplaces. ⪢ Scalability As your business grows, your website can easily scale to accommodate increased traffic and product offerings. Scaling on marketplaces might involve additional fees or limitations depending on the platform's structure. ⪢ Here's a Caveat, Though Building and maintaining your website requires more effort and technical expertise compared to using a pre-built platform like Etsy. You'll need to consider factors like web hosting, domain name registration, website design, security measures, and ongoing maintenance. However, the long-term benefits of control, cost-efficiency, and brand ownership can be significant for businesses looking to establish a strong online presence! The Future of Closer Lives Emporium: What Have We Learnt, and Where Do We Go From Here? This whole experience has been a massive learning curve for us, and as ever hindsight will always demonstrate what could have, should not, and what could have been. If we could go back and do it all over again, would we? To be honest, as tempting as that might be, we wouldn't. We learned far too much through our own mistakes, and we appreciate those as much as we do our successes. We did sell on Etsy, we did make a little bit of cash, and we did come out of it with almost 300 products that are still very much alive and well right here on our site. The learning curve has been steep and challenging, but it has not deterred us from making a success of Closer Lives Emporium. That being said, it has also pushed us to develop our site as a whole, which in turn led to us pursuing one of our biggest passions - writing and blogging! - Added Pressures Gen X Women Face with Grey Hair
In a world obsessed with youthfulness and perfection , the journey of Generation X (Gen X) women embracing their natural grey hair or their silver hair, which now seems to be the preferred reference, is nothing short of revolutionary . For many of us, our hair isn't just HAIR; it's intertwined with the very core of our identity , our sense of self, where we 'fit' in society, and our journey through life. Yet, as we see the signs of aging, face societal pressures, and personal growth, the decision to go grey or ditch the dye becomes a poignant reflection of our values and our commitment to authenticity. In This Post... ● A Little History About Hair Dye ● Gen X Women and Grey Hair ● The Cultural Landscape ● Career and Identity ● The Evolution of Beauty Standards See More... ● Embracing Change ● Sarah's Journey ● Maria's Story ● Jenna's Transformation ● A Mindset Shift Grey Hair Resources ● Recommended Products ● Embracing the Silver Lining ● Jennifer David on Closer Lives A Little History About Hair Dye Hair dyeing has a rich historical background dating back to ancient civilizations. In ancient Egypt, for example, both men and women used natural substances like henna to color their hair. Henna not only served as a means of beautification but also held cultural and religious significance. It symbolized fertility, prosperity, and protection against evil spirits. Similarly, ancient Greeks and Romans practiced hair dyeing using various natural ingredients. Wealthy individuals had access to more elaborate hair dyeing techniques , while commoners used simpler methods with locally available resources. The popularity of hair dyeing persisted throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance , albeit with different cultural and social connotations. However, the Renaissance also marked the beginning of an era where societal expectations regarding beauty became increasingly rigid . Women, in particular, were expected to adhere to idealized standards of femininity, which often included maintaining a youthful appearance. As a result, the pressure to dye one's hair to conceal signs of aging intensified. This pressure only grew stronger with the advent of mass-produced commercial hair dyes in the 19th century . Chemists began experimenting with synthetic compounds to create vibrant and long-lasting hair colors, catering to the rising demand for cosmetic products. Advertisements and media further reinforced the idea that youthfulness and beauty were synonymous, leading many women to feel compelled to dye their hair to conform to these standards. Gen X Women and Grey Hair The Generation X group , born roughly between the early 1960s and late 1970s , found themselves navigating these societal pressures during their formative years. As they entered adulthood in the 1980s and 1990s, they were bombarded with images of airbrushed perfection in magazines, movies, and television . The pressure to maintain a youthful appearance, including covering up signs of aging such as grey hair, was particularly pronounced for this generation. Despite the historical roots of hair dyeing and its cultural significance, the practice has also perpetuated harmful stereotypes and unrealistic beauty ideals . Embracing natural grey hair challenges these stereotypes and encourages individuals to celebrate their authenticity and embrace the natural aging process. It represents a rejection of societal pressures and a reclaiming of individual identity and self-expression. The historical evolution of hair dyeing reflects broader shifts in societal attitudes towards beauty and aging. By understanding this historical context, we can better appreciate the significance of advocating for natural grey hair and challenging the pressures placed on women, including those from the Generation X group , to conform to narrow beauty standards. The Cultural Landscape Growing up in the vibrant era of the 80s and 90s , Gen X women were inundated with images of eternal youthfulness. From magazine covers to Hollywood icons, the message was clear: aging was something to be feared , and grey hair was unwelcome. As we entered the workforce, the pressure to maintain a youthful appearance only intensified. Hair dye became our armor against the passage of time , a shield to protect us from aging. Career and Identity For many Gen X women, our careers are deeply intertwined with our appearance. In industries where youthfulness is prized , the decision to embrace grey hair can feel like a radical act of defiance. Will we be taken seriously in the boardroom with salt-and-pepper hair? Will we be passed over for promotions in favor of our younger counterparts? These are the questions and fears that echo in the minds of so many of us as we contemplate ditching the dye . The Evolution of Beauty Standards Yet, amidst the chaos of societal expectations, a quiet revolution is taking place. With each silver strand that emerges, many Gen X women are reclaiming their narrative , rewriting the script on aging, and challenging ALL the status quo. The beauty standards that once confined us are crumbling, giving way to a more inclusive and authentic definition of beauty. Embracing Change Embracing grey hair isn't just about embracing a new hair color; it's about embracing change in all its forms. It's about embracing the wrinkles that map the journey of our lives, the laughter lines etched around our eyes, and the wisdom that comes with lived experience. It's about embracing the beauty of imperfection and finding strength in vulnerability . As Gen X women, we stand at the crossroads of tradition and transformation, navigating the delicate balance between societal expectations and personal authenticity . Embracing our natural grey hair is more than just a trend; it's a statement of resilience, a celebration of individuality, and a testament to the beauty of aging. In a world where youthfulness is glorified and aging is often feared, the journey of Generation X (Gen X) women embracing their natural grey hair is a testament to resilience, authenticity, and self-acceptance. Let's explore the stories of three remarkable women who have dared to defy societal norms and embrace their silver strands with pride. Sarah's Journey: Redefining Beauty Standards Sarah, a 48-year-old marketing executive , spent years meticulously dyeing her hair to hide any sign of grey. However, after experiencing a series of personal awakenings and reflecting on the pressure to conform to beauty standards, Sarah made the courageous decision to let her natural grey hair shine through. " It was liberating, " she shares. "I realized that true beauty comes from within, and embracing my natural hair color was a powerful affirmation of my self-worth ." Maria's Story: Finding Strength in Vulnerability For Maria, a 52-year-old mother of two, the decision to embrace her grey hair was deeply intertwined with her journey of self-discovery and empowerment . "I spent years trying to fit into society's narrow definition of beauty," Maria reflects. "But as I grew older, I realized that my grey hair was a symbol of strength, resilience, and the wisdom that comes with age." Embracing her natural hair color became a catalyst for Maria to reclaim her identity and embrace her authentic self. Jenna's Transformation: Embracing Change Jenna, a 45-year-old entrepreneur , vividly remembers the moment she decided to stop dyeing her hair. "I was tired of constantly trying to hide my grey roots ," she recalls. "I wanted to live authentically and embrace the natural aging process." Although the transition wasn't always easy, Jenna found solace in the support of her friends and family, who cheered her on every step of the way . "Embracing my grey hair was a transformative experience ," she says. "It taught me to embrace change, celebrate imperfection, and find beauty in the journey." A Mindset Shift The journey of Gen X women embracing their natural grey hair is about more than just a change in appearance - it's a profound shift in mindset . It's about challenging societal norms, redefining beauty standards, and embracing the beauty of aging. So, let us celebrate these women and their courageous decision to break free from the confines of tradition, for they are the pioneers of a new era of authenticity and self-acceptance. And please, don't discourage or deter the people in your life or online who are boldly and bravely embracing their natural hair; they are trying to stand up for change . Do not reflect upon your potential fears surrounding aging and grey hair. And remember so many people are grey at 20 so it isn't even about aging ... but that's a post for another day and first, we face it for women since we are also supporting the pro-aging movement here too! - Want to Feel like a Rebel? 5 Reasons to Grow Out Your Grey Hair
We learn a lot about how we view ourselves and the fears we have associated with going grey and getting older when we decide to embrace the grey . Ditching the hair dye is a big decision for women. The pressures from society are real, and depending on where you live in the world it can also vary greatly. Why Ditching the Dye will help you tap into your Rebel Energy! Growing out your natural gray hair can boost confidence by embracing your authentic look, but it can be challenging too. The process is quite long and many women find themselves always finding a reason as to why this isn’t quite the right time to ditch the hair dye. There may be a family wedding coming up, a business meeting, or a first date. You can plan all you want, but the timing is never going to be perfect so you have to choose whether or not you are going to go through with it and just do it. I now look back fondly at my transition photos and think how proud I am of her for all that she’s learned. That she went to that event like that! She defined her beauty and owned it. Are you ready to ditch the dye? In This Post... ● Authentic Self-Expression ● A Pro-Ageing Perspective ● Break Free from Expectations ● Celebrating Individuality ● Simplified Beauty Routine Grey Hair Resources ● Recommended Products ● Embracing the Silver Lining ● Jennifer David on Closer Lives 1. Authentic Self-Expression Growing out your natural grey hair is a natural and authentic expression of who you truly are. Embracing your natural beauty, including the silver strands, allows you to present yourself to the world without any pretense, fostering a sense of confidence rooted in genuine self-acceptance. I try to demonstrate this in my Instagram reels by showing all sides of me. Filtered and not. 2. Embracing Aging with a Pro-Ageing Perspective Choosing to grow out your grey hair signifies a positive embrace of the aging process. It reflects confidence in navigating different life stages, showcasing that you not only accept but celebrate the wisdom, experience, and privilege that comes with age. Learning the differences between pro-aging and anti-aging helps people to be more language-conscious in expressing their perspectives with others. 3. Breaking Free from Societal Expectations Confidence flourishes when you break free from societal expectations. Choosing to let your natural grey hair shine challenges conventional beauty norms, demonstrating a bold self-assurance that refuses to conform to external pressures and standards. This was the main factor in my decision. I want women to feel freedom through my transition and to normalize grey hair at all ages. I have seen so many women on Instagram embracing their grey hair in their 20s and 30s . Let’s break the stigmas and normalize aging and silver hair so it no longer has to be a part of the conversation for women. 4. Celebrating Individuality Each silver strand in your natural grey hair is unique , just like you. By allowing your hair to grow out naturally, you celebrate the individuality of your journey and appearance. This unique silver hair patterning contributes to an enhanced sense of what makes you distinct. I thought my hair was going to grow in SO white. My temples are very light but I have a darker upper strip and a lot of dark and salt and pepper hair. I also have larger silver highlighted streaks . It’s fascinating to see all the women with their unique patterning styles. 5. Simplified Beauty Routine, Enhanced Confidence Growing out your natural grey hair often simplifies your beauty routine, freeing you from the constant upkeep of hair coloring. This simplicity not only saves time and money, but it also gives you a look that no other human can have . I think that’s pretty neat. I feel passionate about normalizing grey hair in society for women of all ages. For that to happen, people need to see women with grey hair of all ages. They also need to hear, know, and learn that it is fully OK TO GO GREY ANY DAY IN ANY WAY , and then the conversation can go away. Where are you on the journey? - Ditch the Dye: 10 Empowering Reasons to Embrace Your Natural Hair Color
10 Advantages and Benefits of Ditching the Hair Dye and letting your natural hair shine! Why I stopped coloring mine at 48 and embraced my gray hair. I chose to step ‘ outside of the box ’ and ditch the hair dye for many reasons but the main two for me would be the constant stress and frustration of the new root growth showing within weeks of coloring. That and the time. The stress and the time. Isn’t it ironic to see those two words together? Why would we give our time to stress? In This Post... ● Why Do We Color Our Hair? ● 11 Months Grombre ● 10 Advantages and Benefits ● Love Watching Your Hair Grow Grey Hair Resources ● Recommended Products ● Embracing the Silver Lining ● Jennifer David on Closer Lives Why Do We Color Our Hair? We color our hair to feel good about it, and we do, for a few weeks. Then we are worried about the new growth showing again. Many of us can even be found chopping the top off of our heads in selfies to hide the greys. I know I did! Then you are paying for yet another trip to the salon or buying a new box of dye. I started to recognize and feel the weight of this cycle, and I decided life had enough things demanding my time, attention, and money. We know life has no problem finding ways to add stress. I wasn’t willing to pay any currency to do this to myself any longer, so I broke the cycle. 11 Months Grombre Now here we are, 11 months into my natural silver hair grow-out journey. It’s been full of doubts and uncertainties, wonders and curiosities. It’s had me questioning my views on aging and learning about positive language and the differences between an anti- and a pro-aging perspective. I am now in the fondly referred to as 'grombre' or 'gray ombre' stage of my growout. The upper quarter or half of my hair is natural, and the lower half is the previously dyed colour. Some people struggle watching themselves and their hair through the process, but I have quite enjoyed it. I have decided to embrace and celebrate it. I couldn’t be happier that I stuck with it and didn't give in to dye my hair even through the harder days and trust me there are many. 10 Advantages and Benefits of Ditching the Dye and Letting Your Natural Hair Shine! 1. Healthier Hair Hair dyes often contain chemicals that can damage the hair shaft and lead to dryness and breakage. Embracing your natural color allows your hair to grow and maintain its natural health. 2. Reduced Allergic Reactions Some individuals may be allergic to the chemicals present in hair dyes. Going natural eliminates the risk of experiencing allergic reactions or irritations associated with hair dye. 3. Time and Cost Savings Regular hair dyeing sessions can be time-consuming and expensive. By going natural, you save time and money that would otherwise be spent on purchasing hair dye products or visiting the salon. 4. Low Maintenance Natural hair color typically requires less maintenance than dyed hair. You won't have to worry about roots showing or the fading of color, making your hair care routine simpler. 5. Authenticity & Confidence Embracing your natural hair colour allows you to express your authentic self. This can boost your confidence and self-esteem as you embrace and appreciate your unique features. 6. Environmental Impact Hair dye production and application can have environmental consequences due to the chemicals involved. Choosing to go natural reduces the environmental impact associated with the manufacturing and disposal of hair dye products. 7. Avoiding Chemical Exposure Hair dyes often contain chemicals like ammonia and peroxide. By avoiding these chemicals, you reduce your exposure to potentially harmful substances. 8. Versatility in Styling Natural hair often provides a versatile base for styling. You can experiment with different cuts, textures, and styles without the constraints of maintaining a specific color. 9. Aging Gracefully Embracing your natural hair color as you age can be a graceful and authentic way to navigate the natural process of getting older. It can also be a positive example for others to embrace their aging journey. 10. Cultural or Personal Identity For some individuals, their natural hair color is closely tied to their cultural or personal identity. Embracing and celebrating this can foster a deeper connection with one's heritage or individuality. The decision to ditch the hair dye and go natural is a personal one. When you have grey hair it is also a very different change due to societal pressure. We feel pressure that our perception and reception in society may change. Grey hair isn't for old people. Grey hair is so common in many people in their 20s and 30s. It is a hair colour. Many girls and young women feel pressured into coloring their hair from a young age, often told their hair is flat or mousy. So much of our time, money, and energy is spent in this area of our lives. Love Watching Your Hair Grow I am learning to love and accept my hair as it grows in now. My hair has surprised me and not at all grown in as I had hoped for or even anticipated. It's so interesting to go from dreading the silver and white hairs to quickly wishing you had even more of them! It's a journey of letting go and trusting the process. I love growing and changing along with my hair, and I am so happy that my hair is so long, so I have plenty of time to enjoy this transformation. I feel passionate about normalizing grey hair in society for women of all ages. For that to happen, people need to see women with grey hair of all ages. They also need to hear, know, and learn that it is fully OK TO GO GRAY ANYDAY IN ANY WAY, and then the conversation can go away. Balian Beach, Bali, Indonesia Balian Beach isn't your typical Bali hotspot. Tucked away on the west coast, roughly 2 hours northwest of the Ngurah Rai International Airport, it sits nestled between verdant rice paddies and the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean. You'll find it just north of the small village of Sangguling, at the mouth of the Balian River. This secluded location guarantees a more peaceful and intimate experience compared to the bustling south of Bali. Balian Beach is known as a surfer's paradise, where volcanic ash paints the sand black in places, and powerful waves serenade sun-kissed shores. Imagine hand-in-hand strolls along the secluded coast, watching surfers dance with the ocean before sharing intimate moments under starlit skies. That is what you get here in a spot that seems so quiet at night and tranquil during the day, but where you will always find a cool bar or throng of people in a restaurant. This hidden gem offers more than just waves, with nearby rice paddies whispering secrets and charming cafes tempting your taste buds. For a touch of adventure, you will find secluded waterfalls nestled amongst lush greenery and incredible bat caves on the beach. You can even indulge in yoga retreats that reconnect you with nature and each other. Indonesia's Balian Beach is a romantic haven for adventure-loving couples seeking serenity, beauty, and a unique touch of Bali magic, but without all of the tourist kerfuffle! ⪢ Save for Later: 🔗 Balian Beach, the Best Beach in Bali! 2. Petra tou Romiou (Aphrodite's Rock), Paphos, Cyprus Steeped in legend and bathed in Mediterranean sunshine, Aphrodite's Rock in Cyprus promises a love story come to life. Picture yourselves hand-in-hand, strolling along the dramatic coastline where, according to myth, the goddess of love herself emerged from the sea foam. Take a dip in the crystal-clear waters believed to grant eternal love, or explore the hidden grotto said to be where Aphrodite met her lover, Adonis. This enchanting spot sits on the Akamas Peninsula, at the westernmost tip of Cyprus, offering breathtaking views of the turquoise Aegean Sea and a secluded escape for your romantic rendezvous. Just beware, the allure of this mythical haven might make you believe in fairy tales again! It certainly did for us, being the spot where we got engaged. We visited back in June 2019, with Jenn coming to the UK for our first road trip around Europe . Leon's family happened to be in Cyprus at the same time, so we dropped by before heading out to France. Both of us are fascinated by Greek mythology, so the significance of the location was not lost on us, even if the proposal was completely unplanned! ⪢ Save for Later: 🔗 Aphrodite's Rock & Our Engagement Story 3. Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia Ahh, Malaysia's Langkawi. Imagine a tapestry woven from lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and ancient myths - that's Langkawi, a secluded archipelago nestled in the Andaman Sea. This gem, off the northwest coast of Malaysia , promises romance amidst emerald jungles, where playful monkeys swing through the trees and hidden waterfalls cascade into turquoise pools. The spectacular Dream Forest in Langkawi, one of the island's newest and top attractions Explore a vibrant underwater world in crystal-clear waters, or sail around the majestic Kilim Karst Geopark, marvelling at dramatic limestone formations emerging from the sea. Hike through ancient rainforest light shows, search for hidden treasures like the Langkawi Sky Bridge, or soak in the sunset while riding the Langkawi Cable Car. All while enjoying panoramic views that will leave you breathless. Langkawi is an island paradise waiting to be discovered, offering a unique blend of adventure, luxury, and natural beauty to ignite your love story! We spent two weeks in Langkawi in several places across the island, including the incredible Red Coral Cottage, right on one of the epic beaches here, in the north of the island. We were blown away by how quiet it was, strolling on gorgeous white sand beaches without a soul in sight. This is a place of immense peace and tranquillity, where you can take boat tours among the mangroves that are far more personal and connected than the big tourist traps in neighbouring Thailand . Aside from just beaches, Langkawi offers plenty of public spaces, boardwalks, and parks too. The perfect blend for the perfect romantic location! ⪢ Discover More: 🔗 Dream Forest & the Legends of Langkawi 🔗 Langkawi Cable Car & Skybridge 🔗 Langkawi Kuah Night Market 4. Batumi, Republic of Adjara (in Georgia) Most people think of the U.S state of Georgia when we mention it. Georgia is very much a country of its own, and is in one of those spots that is so Eastern Europe it becomes Western Asia . A strategically important city on the Adjara coast, Batumi is easily accessible by plane, with direct flights from major European cities, or by train for a scenic journey through the Caucasus Mountains. Monument of Ilia Chavchavadze, known as the 'Father of the Nation' in Georgia When we talk about escaping the ordinary, Batumi is a city that does that in some very unique ways. European charm meets Eastern vibes on the cobbled streets, giving a flair to the city that can be as romantic as it can be adventurous. Against a backdrop of stunning mountains, the city has a coastline lined by impressive boardwalks, with monuments and gardens to accompany a fantastic beach, even if it is a pebble one. Some of the best sunsets we have ever seen, almost every day here in Batumi. The skies can be gorgeous here, with sunsets to die for. With the beach covered, heading inland is a real treat with quirky architecture like a skyscraper with a built-in Ferris Wheel and a tower straddled with the unique letters of the Georgian alphabet. Batumi also boasts a youthful energy, with bustling bars and clubs alongside peaceful public squares and spaces, offering something for every romantic whim. All accompanied by a great variety of restaurants, plenty of bars and wine spots (wine is said to have been invented here), and a rather unusually large amount of casinos. Which, by the way, offer free buffet food, beverages, and even smokes to their guests. San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico San Cristóbal de las Casas, also known by its native Tzotzil name Jovel, is nestled in the Central Highlands region of the Mexican state of Chiapas in Mexico . It sits in a small valley surrounded by hills, offering stunning vistas and a cool mountain climate. This is a town that they say once you venture into, you will not want to leave. Honestly, this is just about as true as anything we ever learned on our travels. Picturesque views in this classic Mexican town of San Cristobal. Simply put, San Cris is where it is at! We spent 3 incredible months here enjoying all it had to offer. The main thoroughfare through the town is the heartbeat of the action, with gorgeous bars and bistros, restaurants and shops, and all the fresh produce you can shake your reusable grocery bag at. In a Spain-esque style, a sleepy and serene street roars into life in the evenings, with street vendors, performers, artists, and musicians springing to action every evening. Couple that with fireworks, epic sunsets, and dry lightning phenomenon, a quirky cool Airbnb , and that very special Mexican cuisine, and San Cristobal will certainly grab your attention. There is so much to see and explore here! We wrote a whole blog about it in the link below, but we will not leave it on that cliff-hanger. Let's leave it on the incredible street art. Cannot mention the town without its art in the same breath, so there that is. We aren't kidding, the ordinary becomes the extraordinary, and it is first class! El Gouna, Hurghada, Egypt El Gouna, also known as the "Venice of the Red Sea," isn't your typical Egyptian experience. This resort town lies along the Red Sea coast in south-eastern Egypt , roughly 25 km north of Hurghada. Instead of sprawling, sandy beaches, El Gouna is a network of lagoons and canals, creating a unique "Little Venice" vibe. That being said, it still has epic beaches too! Imagine strolling hand-in-hand along charming walkways beside turquoise waters, exploring colorful marinas lined with incredible yachts, and enjoying romantic gondola rides under the Egyptian sun. Beyond its aquatic charm, El Gouna offers a diverse range of adventures; snorkel amid vibrant coral reefs, kite-surf on crystal-clear waters (which it is world-renowned for), or explore the nearby desert landscapes by ATV or in a hot air balloon. This secluded haven promises a romantic escape unlike any other in Egypt. El-Gouna is a walled city, which means that only residents, workers, and guests are allowed in. The security is quite welcome, making it feel super safe, even if you never actually see the 'walls'. There are spectacular restaurants here, all types of cuisine, along with a vibrant nightlife. Everything about it impressed us; it is modern yet old, traditional yet different, resort style yet it feels like a city. It kind of has to be seen to be believed, although there is one drawback, in that if you want to go to Luxor, you will need a nearly 20-hour day to do it. Still worth it though! ⪢ Read More: 🔗 Day Trip Tour from El Gouna to Luxor 🔗 ATV Across the Desert with Alex Safari 7. Gundogan, Bodrum, Türkiye Gundogan in Türkiye offers a blissful escape on the Aegean coast, approximately 17 km southwest of Bodrum. This hidden gem sits within the larger Milas district, surrounded by rolling hills, olive groves, and picturesque bays. Unlike its bustling neighbor, Bodrum, Gundogan exudes a tranquil atmosphere, making it ideal for couples seeking a peaceful and romantic getaway. Having come from a month in Istanbul , the slower pace of Gundogan was very welcome. We came here 2 months before the start of its actual 'season', which meant we were able to enjoy that very sleepy feel as the town sprang to life with businesses getting ready. Let us explain; this bay of this town is completely lined with resorts, bars, and restaurants, in between some villas. They ceremoniously shut down outside of peak season, laying out all of the reed rush parasols and furniture, clearing the decks, and leaving the foliage to grow. How cool is this palm tree! We walked past it every day on the Gundogan boardwalk.k As the season starts to draw near, every day something new starts to appear. Our Airbnb was about halfway up the hill around the bay, and it was awesome to take daily walks down it to the boardwalk for exercise and just because. With no one around, it was seriously beautiful! It amazed us really as the temperature was still in the low 20s, which is just about perfect! So, (we digress), as you walk past, it is great to watch the decks being polished, jetties being set up, bushes being cut back, and fresh menu stands making their way onto the path. April to the end of May is the golden spot here. Gundogan has all of the Turkish charm, calls-to-prayer, markets, and traditional restaurants you could want, it has resorts, water sports, sandy beaches, and adventure tours. Not to mention incredible and vibrant flowers that are beautifully grown in most of the gardens of the white-washed houses. Which, by the way, is a rule here in Gundogan! It may always lose out to Bodrum in the popularity stakes, but you know what, it is probably better that way. If you catch our drift! ⪢ Save for Later: 🔗 A Guide to Gündoğan, Bodrum's Best-Kept Secret 8. Arundel, West Sussex, England Located on the River Arun in West Sussex, England , lies the historic town of Arundel. This charming haven, about 80 km south of London, boasts a medieval castle towering over quaint cobbled streets lined with independent shops and traditional pubs. Imagine hand-in-hand strolls along the riverbank, breathing in the fresh air and soaking in the picturesque views of the castle reflected in the water. We could not get enough of this view at Arundel Castle. Arundel Castle, dating back to the 11th century, offers a glimpse into England's past. It also happens to boast one of the finest gardens you will likely find, in particular a spectacular rose garden that we will never forget. Beyond the castle walls, you will find the equally spectacular Arundel Cathedral, known for its Gothic architecture and giant circular stained-glass window. The location of Arundel is also pretty neat if you want to tie in other must-see spots, including Stonehenge and the Roman city of Bath. We did this loop on a weekend, and it makes for a really neat road trip. While Arundel may be well known in England, it is not a name that rolls off the tongue amongst foreigners. You think castle, you think of Windsor, right? Or the Tower of London? Well, we hope that in this clearly-not-enough space to describe this place slot has done enough to convince you to add this to the list. ⪢ Read More: 🔗 Arundel Cathedral: A Magical Piece of British History 🔗 One of England's Finest, the Historic Arundel Castle 🔗 Stonehenge: History, Facts & Things to Know 9. Whitby, North Yorkshire, England Whitby, set on the North Yorkshire coast where the River Esk meets the North Sea, offers a unique blend of romantic charm, historical intrigue, and natural beauty. This ancient seaside town, roughly 200 miles north of London, is steeped in history. Its East Cliff is dominated by the imposing ruins of Whitby Abbey, a 7th-century monastery famously linked to Bram Stoker's Dracula. Make no mistake, we have been to copious amounts of ruined sites around the world, and this is the ONE to see. The magnificent Whitby Abbey. Even in ruins, it is still imperious! Just the whole experience here is like a whimsical story. From the moment we stepped off the traditional steam train from Pickering, yes, steam train, the town of Whitby was everything we imagined England would have been like back in the day. As a fishing town, there are old nets and crates everywhere, fishing and sail boats in the harbour, old stores with the weather-worn oak beams on the outside, and old stone-built buildings still standing strong after hundreds of years. St Mary's Church Walking towards the sea brings you to 109 steps, which lead to a wonderful old church with one of the most incredible views of any cemetery we have ever come across. The view from up there is one of a kind, even before one gets to the Whitby Abbey ruins themselves, set against a deep blue sky like a painting out of the Louvre. Then package that all together with Dracula and Bram Stoker, fish and chips, old English pubs, sandy beaches, clifftop trails, and the surrounding Yorkshire Moors National Park. At risk of blabbering on like an ad for Whitby, we shall leave it there! ⪢ Read More: 🔗 Whitby Abbey & Dracula's Birthplace 10. Sacre Coeur, Paris, France The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, France , commonly known as Sacré-Coeur Basilica and often simply Sacré-Coeur, is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica in Paris dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is located at the summit of the butte Montmartre, at an altitude of 130 meters (427 feet). The views of Paris from here are phenomenal. From this elevated perch, the Sacré-Coeur offers spectacular panoramic views of the entire city of Paris. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. This breathtaking view, combined with the basilica's stunning architecture, makes it a popular tourist destination. Not just for tourists, it also made it a rather beautiful spot for an evening celebrating our engagement, which we made formal in Cyprus the week prior. We were here literally a few days after, and it was a fitting spot. A place that is as alive during the night as it is during the day. As is Paris itself, of course! Not sure what was going on here, but it was a blast! Okay, so we admit, you will probably find Paris in practically every guide you will ever see about romantic destinations. Most likely in the top two or something, too. So sorry not sorry about that, but here we are. We have no excuses haha! Seriously though, we need not mention all of the other Paris stuff, Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Catacombs, Arc de Triomphe, so on and so on... 11. Isla de Pasion, Cozumel, Mexico Everything about this place fits in with wanderlust and romance. Like a glove! Situated approximately 10 minutes by boat from Cozumel's main shore in Mexico , Isla de Pasion sits on the Caribbean Sea, offering secluded vibes and crystal-clear waters. This private island boasts powdery white sand beaches, fringed by palm trees and lapped by turquoise waters. We had the beach and the docks to ourselves! To get there, you can take an ATV through the main central area of Cozumel, on the only road out of town that goes past the main island resorts before drifting off towards the isolated pier where boats ferry those who find them to the island. Quite literally, you drive off the road onto a dirt path, dodging potholes and overhanging foliage all the way, before parking up in a clearing by a dock that has seen better days. After negotiating with the almost-no-English boat driver on price, we took a three-hour return and went off to enjoy this paradise island that would not look out of place in a Maldives brochure. It is a little bit of a nervous moment waiting for the boat to return, unnecessary, but still. Anyway, we got picked up, albeit a little late, and here we are telling you to do the same thing . Go here. You won't regret it. ⪢ Find Out More: 🔗 Isla de la Pasion: The Secluded Island Paradise 12. Hoi An, Vietnam Hoi An in Vietnam is a captivating town renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage status and its captivating blend of history, culture, and charm. Located approximately 30 kilometers south of Da Nang city and situated beside the picturesque Thu Bon River, Hoi An offers a unique experience that is as romantic as it is cultural and, dare we say it, even spiritual. Stepping into Hoi An's ancient town feels like stepping back in time. Its well-preserved streets, lined with lantern-adorned yellow shophouses dating back to the 15th-19th centuries, exude a magical atmosphere. Its thriving market is the heartbeat of the place, covering most of the riverside streets with just about everything you can think of. The smells were beautiful too, no durian in sight (if you do not know Durian fruit, you will when you come to Asia), just warm incense and kind smiles to accompany them. This show happens every night at Hoi An Memories Theme Park. As the sun sets, the transformation in the town gets underway, with more lanterns than you can imagine on just about every tree and every store. This town has been a trading hub for so long, it has blended and frozen cultures from all over Asia . It tells this story in a mesmerizing show called Hoi An Memories, located on an island on the river. Add this experience to gorgeous local cafes and restaurants, friendly locals, and the monthly lantern festival, lighting candles on the river, and you have a place of romance and wanderlust. Period! A shop at Mulberry Silk Village. A big shout out to the incredible Mulberry Silk Village in Hoi An , where we stayed too. We are yet to write about this incredible experience on our blog, but it will be coming soon! This fabulous hotel includes a silk workshop with traditional techniques and hand-sewn clothing. Not to mention exquisite cuisine and several pools to enjoy and relax in. ⪢ Save for Later: 🔗 Magic in the Moonlight: Hoi An Night Market 13. Singapore Singapore , a sovereign island city-state in Southeast Asia, is a vibrant metropolis known for its futuristic skyline, colonial architecture, and diverse cultural tapestry. Sitting at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore is separated from Malaysia by the Johor Strait and Indonesia by the Singapore Strait. Its compact size, measuring just 728 square kilometers, makes it easily explorable on foot or by its efficient public transportation system. Singapore's unique character stems from its multicultural population, comprising Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Eurasian communities. This blend is reflected in its languages, religions, cuisine, and architecture, creating a truly fascinating experience for visitors. The Garden Rhapsody Light and Sound Show. Perhaps most famous for its iconic Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands, this futuristic city has plenty to romanticize about. If you do not know about these two places, you will see them featured just about anywhere Singapore is mentioned. But while this garden paradise, complete with the famous Supertree Grove and Cloud Forest Dome, is great during the day, at night it becomes a free light show beneath the trees and stars. Meanwhile, Marina Bay Sands, which affords you a rooftop view with breathtaking views of the bay, becomes a shopping haven throughfare to the electric Spectra Light and Water Show, also free at night. Then, of course, there is probably the best Chinatown in all of Southeast Asia, with its epic Hawker Center complete with the world's first hawker Michelin Star, Hawker Chan. Oh, and then there is Little India, local islands to explore, a vibrant nightlife, and everything without the need for a car. Oh, and the incredible world-famous Jewel at Changi Airport (which by the way is one of the best airports in the world). Sold on Singapore yet? Chiang Rai, Thailand Chiang Rai, located in the mountainous northern region of Thailand , is a city brimming with cultural charm, natural beauty, and unique experiences. Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbor, Chiang Mai , Chiang Rai offers a more relaxed and authentic Thai experience, perfect for those seeking to delve deeper into the country's rich heritage and stunning landscapes. The Blue Temple, aka Wat Rong Suea Ten. As with most Thai cities, Chiang Rai is brimming with temples, amongst them some of the most famous in the country itself. The White Temple and the Blue Temple are indeed worthy of that title, which is saying something given there are over 40,000 across the land of smiles. The best part about here, however, was not so much the inner city, but more about the outskirts, where we found a fantastic Airbnb. At the time, we were renting a car and had a permanent stay in Chiang Mai. So we came up to the Rai via the only highway, which happens to be windy and mountainous and very nice, to stay in a 'dome', overlooking a delightful mountain valley with a bathtub on its balcony. Style Paidoi Resort is one of those that speaks for itself, and goes hand in hand with the romance, of course! We will get around to writing about it one day, but for now, you are just gonna have to trust us, and in the meantime, check out the sister temples and the very odd, and almost concerning Baan Dam Museum below. ⪢ Top Destinations in Chiang Rai: 🔗 Black House Museum 🔗 The Blue Temple Chiang Rai 🔗 The White Temple in Chiang Rai 15. Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada Last on the list but by no means the least, Niagara Falls is a group of three waterfalls at the southern end of Niagara Gorge, spanning the border between the province of Ontario in Canada and the state of New York in the United States. The largest of the three is Horseshoe Falls, which straddles the international border of the two countries. It is also known as the Canadian Falls, and this is the one we visited. Twice, and for Jenn (as a Canadian from Toronto), many more on top of that! If you are looking for a romantic stroll, it doesn't get much better than Niagara Falls at night. Niagara Falls is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and for good reason. The falls are truly awe-inspiring, with a total height of 167 feet (51 m) and a width of 3,419 feet (1,043 m). The water flow rate is an average of 6,000 cubic meters per second (212,000 cubic feet per second), although this can vary depending on the time of year and weather conditions. It is a truly spectacular sight to witness, especially from the top of the falls or at night with the mesmerizing fireworks and light show. There are many different ways to experience Niagara Falls, from taking a boat ride to the bottom of the falls to walking behind them. As mentioned earlier, you can also take a boardwalk right up to the top, and you can even take a zip line back down to the bottom during the day or at night. There is so much to do here, including go-karts and 5D theatres. There are a ton of other activities around the falls, too, including amusements, museums, bars, restaurants, and resorts. There is something truly magical about Niagara Falls, and the energy here is powerful. Incredibly, it seems to be avoided on many a list out there, but trust us, it is worth it. And a fitting place to end this not-in-any-particular-order list! ⪢ All You Need to Know: 🔗 Niagara Falls in Canada Zip-lining down the falls at night has to be one of our best experiences! - Safety First: 6 Top Recommendations for Airbnb Guests
Considering an Airbnb for your upcoming getaway could be a wise economic choice. Yet, it's important to note that they may not offer the level of security found in hotels. As such, when arranging your Airbnb accommodations, it's crucial to conduct thorough research and take several precautions before finalizing your reservation. From scrutinizing your host's reputation through past guest reviews to assessing the safety of the local area and inspecting the rental for hidden surveillance devices, this guide outlines vital tips to safeguard your well-being throughout your journey. In This Post... ● Airbnb Safety Tips ● Reviews and Rating - Basics ● Check for Cameras ● Read Airbnb Host Profiles ● Make Sure the Host Is Responsive See More... ● Don't Leave Airbnb to Pay ● Store Your Valuables Safely ● Conclusion ● Our Lifestyle Blog Airbnb Safety Tips Image source : pexels.com First, I would like to clarify how reliable Airbnb is. When you ask, Is Airbnb safe , what are you comparing it to? If we are talking about property sharing, then Airbnb is much safer. Compared to hotels, the level of security is much lower. We won't delve into Airbnb's security technologies; for that, you can visit the VeePN website. From the article, you can learn about Airbnb safety concerns and options for improving safety. We'll focus on what can be done to improve security when using Airbnb. 1. Reviews and Rating - Basics When it comes to ensuring safety with Airbnb accommodations, paying attention to guest reviews is paramount. Before making a booking, it's essential to peruse the reviews—doing otherwise is not advisable. After finding a visually and statistically appealing listing, the next step is to dive into individual guest reviews. Reviews are incredibly telling; they're personal accounts of previous guests' experiences. Negative experiences, in particular, tend to prompt guests to share their concerns, offering future guests valuable insights. 2. Check for Cameras You can ask the host directly about the presence of security cameras for complete transparency. Despite the prohibition of concealment devices, conducting a sweep of the accommodations for cameras is a good practice to maintain privacy. Platforms like Airbnb strictly forbid the use of hidden cameras and any recording equipment. Hosts are obligated to inform about any such devices on the premises. Specifically, recording is not allowed in private areas such as bedrooms and bathrooms; however, it may be present in shared spaces. Surveillance devices must not be installed inside rental properties, although exterior cameras are permitted with full disclosure to guests. Nevertheless, there have been incidents reported in the media where travelers found undisclosed cameras in their rented spaces. 3. Read Airbnb Host Profiles To enhance your safety during your stay, it's recommended to thoroughly review the profiles of Airbnb hosts. A well-crafted host profile is often an indicator of a reliable and attentive Airbnb host. A comprehensive profile typically includes a detailed personal description. Hosts who invest time in sharing information about themselves are likely to demonstrate a commitment to providing a positive guest experience. Moreover, pay attention to the verification information a host has submitted to Airbnb. At a basic level, look for confirmed contact details such as a government-issued ID, a verified phone number, and an email address. 4. Make Sure the Host Is Responsive It's critical to select an attentive host for a worry-free experience. Should any problems arise or if you encounter an emergency, you'll appreciate a host who can return your communication promptly, ideally within a day. Imagine being locked out of your accommodation with no timely support – it’s a scenario best avoided. Before booking, sift through the reviews focusing on the host's communication score. A high rating in this area is reassuring. Initiate a conversation with your potential host ahead of your visit to gauge their responsiveness. If you encounter a lack of responsiveness or unsettling inquiries, consider it a red flag. It's advisable to cancel and seek another place rather than risk a potentially unsafe circumstance upon arrival. 5. Don't Leave Airbnb to Pay Image source : pexels.com Ensuring safety on Airbnb revolves significantly around secure payments within the platform. Wondering what that entails? Let's take a moment to address a common query that I, as an Airbnb host, often encounter. Many guests propose the idea of bypassing the Airbnb platform for direct cash transactions when booking. On the surface, this might appear beneficial. Guests and hosts could potentially save on the service fees charged by Airbnb. For instance, a week's accommodation priced at $2,000 on the platform might be reduced to $1,600 if the service fees are eliminated. That's an enticing saving, right? However, it's essential to reconsider. Operating outside Airbnb's system is not a wise choice. It’s better to already install a VPN on iOS and try to save on housing by changing the region. This way, you will be protected by Airbnb and save money. 6. Store Your Valuables Safely You should check whether their accommodations include a secure safe for storing valuables. Essential items such as passports, electronic devices, and jewelry should be placed in the most secure location available, and some rental properties offer safe storage solutions. In certain cases, it might be necessary to supply your own padlock, which adds a layer of security since only you will have access to the combination. You can use portable safes as an alternative for safeguarding possessions during travel. These safes typically consist of a fabric outer layer integrated with wire mesh and are secured with a braided steel cable, effectively deterring thieves unless they possess bolt cutters. The Pacsafe brand is one of the best in the field for its range of anti-theft products, including portable safes. Conclusion Airbnb accommodations offer an affordable alternative for lodging during travel. Yet, unlike hotels, they may lack standardized security protocols. To ensure a secure and enjoyable stay, it's essential to conduct thorough research before finalizing your Airbnb reservation. Pay close attention to the host's review history, assess the safety of the local area, and be vigilant for the presence of undisclosed surveillance devices within the property. Above, you will find a checklist of crucial considerations that will help safeguard your well-being while you're away from home. - UAP/UFO Sighting Video: What We Saw & Why It Left Us Questioning Everything
Before recording the video you will see later in this post, Jenn and I stood hand-in-hand and mesmerized under the spotlight of a street lamp, in the middle of a bend in the road at night. We had just walked out of an alleyway in Bedford, England , an impromptu evening walk after a great evening spent with our neighbors and friends. As we turned to go back home, what we saw was something we will NEVER forget. Before choosing this as our path, we had walked in the opposite direction but it was exceptionally blustery and it put us off... as if the wind was blowing against us. We decided to walk down an alley a few blocks back in the opposite direction. As we went down the dimly lit alley, we had a brief discussion about Jenn leaving her phone at home. 'Going for a walk, why would I need it?' Jenn said. At that point, Leon remarked how he always carries his phone, just in case. For emergencies, for random things, he might see. Jenn agreed, and how apt that conversation was, just moments before our encounter. Just before leaving the alleyway into the clearing, Jenn said we should 'turn in the spotlight' and head back. So we did, and as we turned, we saw what we can only describe as a bright orange ball of light. Like the orange of the old street lamps before they replaced them with LED. Imagine that and then amplify it about fivefold. This light made no noise and hovered in the distance at the same height as the ridge of the rooflines of the houses you see past the lamp. We stood there almost static and awestruck as this light ghosted from left to right across the street. It was roughly 20ft away. Stretch your arm out upwards, point your finger, and imagine a fifty-pence piece at the end of it. That was how big it was. It moved slowly and had a circular shape to its right / front. From the back was an almost flat vertical line separating the spectacular orange glow from what looked like a grayish sphere emanating like a tail. It was completely noiseless and was nothing like any drone we have even imagined, let alone seen. As we watched, amazed, it almost looked like it turned, came towards us, then moved back, and continued to the left across to where the alleyway was behind us. At that point, Jenn jolted us out of our almost trance-like state and said to record it. So I grabbed my phone, although invariably by this point it was starting to move upwards, getting faster and faster. It was now moving rapidly away from us into the night sky towards the stars. Jenn went to follow it down the alley as I recorded. Then, as quickly as it came, it was gone. This was certainly no floating lantern; the movement, size, and appearance as I zoomed in demonstrate that. As far as we are aware, drones have discernible lights and noise, and it had none of those elements either. There are many things we were feeling after what we saw; awe, amazement, excitement, and wonder. The way it approached us, the way we stood stunned, the way it zipped up into the night sky after its slow hover, it is something we cannot explain. Watch on YouTube We have both watched an absolute ton of documentaries about UFOs, studied ancient alien theories, consumed many shows about conspiracies, and studied numerous religions and civilizations and their connections to flying objects in the sky. If this were man-made, it is certainly nothing like we have ever seen. Check out the video below and see what you think. Obviously, in hindsight, we wish we had pulled the phone out earlier! It is really funny as Leon records everything all of the time, being an avid photographer, but seeing this was a real shock and it did not even cross our minds until Jenn snapped us out of it. We have read about many accounts like this. The paralysis is real! The photos you see below were taken at 100x zoom, at a distance way closer than the moon. Just for context, I filmed this on my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. For those that do not know, the camera has 100x zoom, powerful enough to snap a shot of the moon in incredible detail: This UAP / UFO was MUCH closer than the moon, of course. So much so that we would have fully expected my phone to pick up a more detailed image! Furthermore, we celebrated New Year's in Thailand a month later by releasing lanterns into the sky, a traditional activity in the Land of Smiles. When we originally told people about our encounter, many suggested that it could have been a lantern. So this was a great opportunity to take a shot of one in the sky and compare the footage. Leon took this shot at a much further distance than the photo of the UAP. The night conditions were virtually the same, too; it was a clear night sky. As you can see, the lantern is easy to make out (albeit a little blurry). This is most certainly not what we saw. Just for good measure, this was a video of releasing the lantern: On a final note, we have to mention that only days earlier, we had been discussing aliens and UFOs, something Leon has believed in his entire life. We have had so many debates and discussions about this and Leon kept talking about how desperate he was to see something... anything. Jenn said in this discussion 'Well, okay universe, Leon wants to see one, I want to see one, just do it already!' Two days later, this happened! We do not believe in coincidences, and we know for sure that we are being guided, that we are manifesting all the time, and that our connection to the universe is strong. The whole series of events, from being pushed back by a crazy wind, to our discussion about Jenn not having her phone in the alley, from Jenn pointing towards the spotlight at the end of the alley and wanting to turn back, to then seeing this hovering ball of light. It did feel like we were meant to see this. This happened on October 15th, 2022, at 20:20, in Shortstown, Bedford, England. We felt compelled to come forward after watching The Lost Century by Steven Greer, who also made the documentary Unacknowledged, and is the founder of the CE5 program. (We would recommend you check them out). We had a debrief in our back garden when we got back, admittedly super excited and still pretty shocked at what had transpired. Our home was only a few minutes walk away from the spot we saw the UFO up close, and the direction as it flew away was directly above our home. As Leon looked up again at the sky, he swore he saw a distinctive light again, almost like a short, sharp shooting star; perhaps this was the final push out of the atmosphere. Either way, be it a ball of energy, an orb, a man-made technology, or a UFO, we do feel like we are not alone in this magnificent universe. Now more than ever. - The Power of Purpose and Intention: Living Life with Meaning and Direction
There is such importance and power behind a name. I recall talking with my ex-mother-in-law (a strong Christian) while I was pregnant with her first grandchild, and she asked me what name I was planning to choose. She discussed with me the gift and power of intention in a name... I love the lessons and wisdom that come from older generations than our own (yes, even that from an ex-mother-in-law). So, long story short, I named her grandchildren Noah, Eden & Adam. Both a gift to her and my children. In This Post... ● What Does Jennifer Mean? ● Names in Ancient Cultures ● The Power of the Universe ● The Lady in Black ● Balance Between Life & Dark ● About Jennifer David ● Our Lifestyle Blog What Does Jennifer Mean? Jennifer: My name essentially means “white fairy” or “white phantom” and has origins dating back to Roman Britain, perhaps even to pagan goddesses. Jennifer comes from a Cornish form of the Welsh name Gwenhwyfar. “Jennifer” itself is Cornish for “white wave” or “white shadow”. “Gwenhwyfar,” as it turns out, is derived from the elements gwen meaning ‘fair, white, blessed’ and sebara meaning ‘phantom, magical being.’ Interesting side note: I have been seriously considering allowing my natural hair to grow in. I have been coloring and hiding my new growth of grey, white, and SILVER; literal SILVER hair, for years. It's going to be a long process, but I am in it to win it. When I saw the photos below of Annika von Holdt with her beautiful natural hair, I was convinced that this is the path for me, too. Am I the only one getting total MARVEL vibes here....channeling energy from your hands with white and silver hair!? Names in Ancient Cultures In ancient cultures and tribes all over the world, they used to introduce themselves fully. Why do we no longer say ‘I’m Jennifer, pure of heart, a white enchantress’? It sounds WAY cooler and far more memorable! And if you don’t identify with your birth name any longer, change it and find something that resonates with the new you... Trust me, I’m a Scorpio. I’ve lived many lives in this one already... we are the transformers! Take a name in your spiritual transformation process (but do remember there is a key and relevance in your birth namesake in your spiritual journey). The Power of the Universe After asking the universe (manifesting, calling it into being) for a deep, real conversation about the things I’m passionate about with a stranger, I recently met a fascinating man while we were in Patong, Phuket, for Songkran, the WATER PARTY of the year and the Buddhist New Year in Thailand! When I returned from the washroom Leon was discussing ChatGPT with him and he hadn't tried it out... the first question he asked was 'Explain to me Athenian Democracy' and that says it all. He was a fellow Canadian at that, I rarely have met Canadians in my travels and/or fellow funeral directors (which I ALSO met here at this exact restaurant the day before, but that's a story for another time). He is a backpacker in his late 50s... a world traveler, writer, extremely spiritual & knowledgeable likes to dissect society, technology, politics, space, and quantum, and discuss ‘conspiracy theories’... he knew his ‘stuff’ (the ‘stuff’ that matters to me) he ‘spoke’ my language. All joking aside, I do speak 4 languages! When I finally got around to asking his name (often in travels we just get talking naturally and casually and introductions tend to fall to the wayside) he said ‘Well, I go by Dallas...’ I thought that was an odd way to put it, and it felt impersonal to me. I like to know the depths of people (I'm a Scorpio, we don't do surface level), and his statement felt lingering to me, so following my intuition, I said, “Yes, but what is your ‘birth/real name’?” (which I wouldn’t normally ask!) He said, ‘You know, it’s been so long since I’ve used it I can’t even bring myself to say it out loud...’ and he didn’t say it... But I could tell he thought/felt deeply about it... and I KNOW, as a healer, that was a takeaway for him. A call to heal his namesake wounds... often in lineage/generational patterns and childhood trauma wounds, etc. There’s no escaping the inner works when they come calling for you... And they will at some point in your journey. The Lady in Black The other fascinating thing I find about my name is that, oddly, I have many times in my life been referred to by strangers as ‘the lady in black’. Maybe it's due to the sense of mystery or allure my energy sends out. I remember when Leon and I stayed in Merida, Mexico, in June 2021 at an old Mansion, and the host kept calling me Lady in Black all weekend... for example, he brought a bottle of wine to our room and said, " You're welcome, Lady in Black." That was the weekend that Leon read aloud to me all over the grounds from the Book of Osiris written by a clairaudient that I had found a few days prior at the local bookstore. I paid 60 pesos for it and it is valued at USD 450 (I love books, however, I am no collector, etc, quite the opposite actually, since it's difficult to travel with tangible books). The book was a blessing to me in so many ways! Again, a story for another day. The Balance Between Life and Dark I’m a Scorpio and my color is black, and I have an affinity for the tone... It’s my clothing color of choice, but my namesake is all about the white... maybe it's the balance between light and dark? White and Black? The yin and yang? Who knows, but what I do know is that there is true power and gifting that is attached to words and names. Writing prompt: What does your name mean? Compose an essay or write a poem about your name... your namesake... anything that comes to you associated with your name... have you noticed any generational patterns, etc. Learn about you! - A Romantic Love Story of Two Poets: When Words Lead to Forever
It started with a poem. Not one written for each other, but two lives quietly unfolding on separate sides of the world, linked by shared words and quiet admiration. Jenn and I met on Instagram—two poets writing through grief, growth, and longing. What began as mutual appreciation for each other’s work soon became something more: late-night conversations, voice notes filled with vulnerability, and eventually a leap of faith that changed everything. This is our love story—not a fairy tale, but something even better. A real connection born from words, nurtured across oceans, and carried through airports, bus rides, and border crossings ever since. Here is a short overview of our journey, starting from heartbreak, leading to a remarkable adventure spanning continents, and eventually transitioning to a lifestyle of full-time slow travel around the globe! We were both recovering heartbroken poets on Instagram (cliché we know, but it's true) in Feb 2019, where we met and found a fairy-tale of a relationship. It's funny how the universe likes to do these things right!? Jenn was living in Canada , and Leon was living in England . We've shared our physical meeting for the first time in Australia for a Royal Caribbean cruise and our story from there with our followers, fans and friends on Instagram. It was a pretty natural and unintentional thing for us to do really, especially after both being quite active members of the poetry community on Instagram before us connecting. Our very first selfie in Sydney, Australia, on the Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas. We read poetry LIVE on Instagram and had a community poetry platform page where we featured and shared others' work for years. We only recently stopped this when our full-time travels began, as it was too much to manage with our new endeavors. We got engaged at Aphrodite's Rock in Cyprus after four months and a previous one-month-long date (imagine a first date lasting one month and covering 5 countries, needless to say, we got to know each other QUITE well!). Travel has always been a part of our journey; Leon moved to Canada with me in September 2019. Thankfully, we were able to be together throughout the ongoing of 2020; something we are ever grateful for as so many couples were unable to see one another or be together during that difficult time. In January 2021, we decided to make some more major life changes. Changing not only our lifestyle but also our careers. We sold, donated, and stored all of our possessions and rented out our property to head out for the digital nomadic lifestyle. Go big or go home, right?! It's kind of how we do things… It's like our motto.... our entire relationship required so much trust and faith in both one another and the universe. A life lived boldly and bravely will indeed be one to be remembered... so here we are, 6 years later, with 42 countries together under our belts... - Full-Time Travel: 5 Essential Things to Know Before You Hit the Road
The decision to embark on the life-changing journey to explore and travel the world full-time is a big one... While we can list thousands of reasons why you should do so, we feel that it's important to also highlight the lesser talked about and more challenging aspects of this lifestyle choice , to help you be better equipped. These are our 5 top things to remember before you travel full-time... if you have any other suggestions, please drop them in the comments below! In This Post... 1. Full-Time Travel IS a Job 2. Relationships and Connections 3. Funding Your Travels 4. Letting go of Creature Comforts 5. Travel Alone or With Someone? ● FAQ: Full-Time Travel 1. Full-Time Travel IS a Job The colorful umbrellas at Balat Cafe in Istanbul So much goes into planning travels, especially if you are operating on a budget. So much research goes into finding adequate accommodations, places to stay, how to use the transportation systems, what neighborhood is ideal for you to stay in, and whether it meets your monthly budget. Travel by air or train requires using different systems in different languages. Visa costs and length of stay. Finding excursions and affordable food and restaurant costs. Changing costs of living are dependent upon the country. Learning about the cultural customs of the country you are visiting. And… then we do it all again the next month! 2. The Relationships & Connections You Lose May Surprise You (However, There Are More to Gain!) Be wise with your money. Many people will not understand your need or choice to travel the world. You may be surprised by the people you lose as you travel, but remember people can’t help but operate from a self-perspective. If they couldn’t imagine it or think it’s risky or selfish, that is about them, not you. People will miss you and what you bring to their lives. People may say that they will keep in touch, but you may see the video calls become further apart. Time zone differences, busy schedules, and the like can impact things. When you do return home after years or months of travel, you may feel that you no longer fit in, or better yet, that you no longer want to. 3. Make Sure You Can Fund Your Travels NOW Missing our creature comforts of home Social media will lead you to believe that it’s as simple as selling your belongings and hitting the road! With a few steps of setting up a blog, filming a YouTube video , and creating a drop shipping company, you can fund your travels. While these are great options and possibilities, like most things, it takes time and dedication towards things for them to grow and prosper. We suggest that you have a solid financial plan that is stable before considering full-time travel… while we fully believe in leap first and that the universe must respond, we still think practicality is a good complement to this! 4. Can You Let Go of Your Creature Comforts? Jennifer David: A Broad Perspective This one, we think most people assume they can do no problem, and then get surprised by the ebbs and flows of how this comes into play when traveling full-time. Living out of one suitcase (full seasonal wardrobes) is quite the challenge. Especially if you plan to film videos and take many photos …you’ll be wearing much of the same clothing throughout (unless you plan to shop and change often, which is a possibility, but also another expense to keep in mind). It’s really difficult to get things shipped or delivered when you are moving frequently. Many countries' postal systems are not up to par, so it can be very difficult to receive care packages or even online shopping. Snacks and foods you love from home will be missed. Trust us when we say Doritos DO NOT taste the same throughout the world, nor do most of the major fast food chains that you were hoping to have a bite at for a small taste of home. 5. Can You Be Alone or Full-Time Together With Your Travel Person? Spending a lot of time alone or with another person while traveling can easily lead to depression and anxiety, both from loneliness and co-dependency. When traveling solo, you need to remember that you may not speak the language, so communication and friendships can become very difficult. If you fall ill, you won’t have a support system with you. When traveling with a partner, you spend 24/7 together during high-stress times, and it’s not always easy to remain amicable when you are exhausted from travel or trying to overcome an obstacle or language barrier. FAQ: Full-Time Travel – What You Should Know Before Going All In Do I need to save a lot of money before starting full-time travel? Having savings helps, but you don’t need to be rich. Many full-time travelers start with a modest cushion and fund their journey through remote work, freelancing, house sitting, teaching English, or seasonal jobs. Planning and flexibility are key. Is it lonely being on the road all the time? It can be at times, but you’ll also meet people constantly, especially if you stay in hostels, join tours, or connect with online travel communities. The key is balancing solo time with social time and finding places where you feel a sense of belonging. How do you deal with healthcare and travel insurance? Long-term travelers usually buy global health or travel insurance like SafetyWing or World Nomads. Some countries also offer short-term local insurance for digital nomads or expats. It’s important to research coverage by region, especially for high-risk destinations or activities. What’s the biggest challenge of full-time travel? It’s not always picture-perfect. The biggest challenges are visa logistics, burnout, income stream maintenance, and finding stable Wi-Fi. You’ll also need to let go of routines and be open to frequent change. How do you pick where to go next? It depends on your budget, visa access, weather preferences, and personal interests. Many travelers follow a mix of slow travel (spending weeks/months in one place) and spontaneous side trips. Flexibility is one of full-time travel’s biggest perks. - Durres Amphitheatre Guide: Explore Albania’s Ancient Roman Arena by the Sea
Located in the center of Durrës, Albania's second-largest city, the Durrës Amphitheatre is a symbol of the area's rich history and Roman heritage. Being one of the largest Roman amphitheaters in the Balkans, dating back to the 2nd century, it is a must-see for both history buffs and inquisitive travelers. Although Durrës Amphitheatre is quite large, it can be surprisingly difficult to locate, even though it's situated in the heart of a city that has expanded around and even atop this remarkable piece of Roman history. It is not very well signposted, although once you see the ancient walls and beautiful gardens, that surround it, your pretty much there. In this post , we’ll cover all you need to know about the Durrës Amphitheatre, from its fascinating history and interesting facts to practical travel information from our personal experience visiting this incredible site. In This Post... ● Our Highlights ● The History ● 10 Interesting Facts ● Tickets, Hours & When to Go ● How to Get There See More... ● Tips for Visiting ● Watch on YouTube ● Our Experience Rating ● FAQ: Durrës Amphitheatre Travel Resources ● Get Travel Insurance ● Find Hotels in Durres ● Book Transport ● Interactive Map ● Closer Lives Travel Hub Our Durres Amphitheatre Highlights The Durrës Amphitheatre was discovered in the 1960's and excavation tricky owing to the properties that were literally built over it, such was the depth at which it had been buried. It is said that the last gladiator fights occurred here in the 5th century, when the city was known as Dyrrachium, with the site being taken over by Christians for religious events as the Roman empire entered its dying days. Sometime around the 7th century, the city was renamed Durrës, and as it began to expand into Albania's 2nd largest city, the Amphitheatre was abandoned, buried under layers of earth and eventually built upon. But more on that later! The history and story of this great theatre were always going to attract us, and we were very excited to see it. A pathway has been constructed that leads to a really good viewpoint above the amphitheatre, where one can really get a good feel for its size. And it is big indeed. Restoration efforts have been pretty slow here, and the lack of progress is probably the main reason Durrës Amphitheatre has yet to be granted World Heritage status. The main arena floor is still covered in grass, and you can see some houses and other structures that are yet to be removed, most likely covering the missing part of the ring. You are able to walk around the entirety of the amphitheatre, although it is now fenced off and you are not able to access the seating areas or center area. You are able to see a small mosaic and remains of a Christian chapel at the front, along with one of the tunnels, for a small charge of 300 lek. It was closed when we arrived, although the free view from the top of the amphitheatre felt more than worth it in itself. The pink house on the left is most likely sitting on the remaining part of the outer seating There seems not to be much effort to capitalise on tourism here just yet, and the site still feels very raw and underdeveloped. There aren't any information boards or brochures, and if you choose not to visit the chapel, it will not take long to check it all out. That being said, it is one heck of a piece of history, and if you want to know more about that, read on! The History Behind the Durres Amphitheatre The city of Durrës, originally known as Dyrrachium in ancient times, has a history stretching back to the 7th century BC. Founded by Greek colonists from Corinth and Corcyra, Dyrrachium became a prominent settlement due to its strategic position along the Adriatic Sea, making it a key hub for trade and military operations in the region. During the Roman era, Dyrrachium rose to prominence as an essential link in the Via Egnatia, a significant road connecting Rome to Byzantium (modern-day Istanbul). It was during this period, in the 2nd century AD under the reign of Emperor Trajan, that the magnificent Durrës Amphitheatre was constructed. This grand structure was designed to host gladiatorial games and other public spectacles, accommodating up to 20,000 spectators, which made it one of the largest amphitheaters in the Balkans. The amphitheatre’s architecture reflects Roman engineering mastery, with a combination of underground tunnels, vaulted seating, and an intricate drainage system. These features allowed for the smooth operation of the games and provided a captivating experience for the audience. The structure served as a cultural and social focal point for the city during its heyday. As the Roman Empire declined, so did the significance of the amphitheatre. By the 4th century AD, parts of the structure began to be repurposed. During the Byzantine period, a small chapel was constructed within the amphitheatre, adorned with stunning mosaics that reflected the shift toward Christianity. Over the centuries, the site was gradually abandoned, buried under layers of earth, and forgotten. The amphitheatre was rediscovered in the 1960s during urban construction work in Durrës. As workers were excavating for new buildings, they uncovered parts of the amphitheatre’s structure. This accidental find sparked archaeological interest, leading to extensive excavations that revealed the amphitheatre’s impressive scale and historical importance. Many of the recovered artifacts can be found at the Durrës Archaeological Museum . 10 Interesting Facts About the Durres Amphitheatre ● It’s the largest Roman amphitheatre in the Balkans: Measuring approximately 136 x 113 metres, it once seated 15,000–20,000 spectators, making it the largest of its kind in the region. ● Built in the 2nd century AD: Historians believe the amphitheatre was constructed during the reign of Emperor Trajan, around 100–110 AD, when Dyrrachium (modern Durrës) was a major Roman city. ● Gladiator battles were held here: Just like the Colosseum in Rome, the Durrës Amphitheatre hosted gladiatorial combat, wild animal fights, and public spectacles. ● A chapel was added in the 4th century: During the early Christian period, a Byzantine chapel with beautiful mosaics was built inside the structure, some of which are still visible today. ● It was hidden underground for centuries: After earthquakes and urban development, the amphitheatre was completely buried and forgotten until 1966, when a local construction worker stumbled across it. ● It’s still partially buried: To this day, much of the amphitheatre lies beneath houses and streets, as full excavation would require major restructuring of the city centre. ● You can walk through ancient tunnels: Visitors can explore original underground passages once used by gladiators, performers, and animals preparing for battle. ● The site blends Roman and Christian history: It’s rare to find a Roman arena with preserved Christian elements, showing the site’s transition from pagan entertainment to religious use. ● It survived multiple earthquakes: Durrës is in an earthquake-prone region, and the amphitheatre has withstood several over the centuries, though parts have collapsed and been rebuilt. ● It’s on UNESCO’s tentative list: While not yet a full UNESCO World Heritage Site , the Durrës Amphitheatre is on Albania’s tentative list, recognized for its cultural significance and potential. - Bunk’Art 2, Tirana: Inside Albania’s Secret Nuclear Bunker Turned Museum
In 2015, this communist era bunker was unveiled to the public after being shrouded in secrecy for nearly 40 years. Built as part of an astonishing network of 700,000 such tunnels and bunkers across Albania , now repurposed as a museum, here you will meet the horrors of a brutal, paranoid dictatorship. Bunk'Art 2 is a symbol of a dark past, yet one that now signifies a new era for this proud Balkan state. We were already aware of some of Albania's history from our research before traveling here. But honestly, nothing can quite prepare you for witnessing this dark history up close and personal, deep beneath the bustling capital. The energy was heavy and the mood sombre as we were greeted with an audio recording reading out the names of political convicts on entry. Our curiosity was heightened, although the haunting feeling about the place never quite left us as we went from room to room. Read on for more on our experience here, why the bunkers were constructed, how you can visit, and other things to do in the area. Why Should You Visit? Bunk'Art 2 is the second of two nuclear bunkers in Tirana, located just off Skanderbeg Square . It is just over 1000 m2 and was built for the Ministry of Internal Affairs during the communist rule of the country. In other words, it was used almost exclusively by the police and houses 24 rooms which include a prison cell and decontamination rooms. Albania was subject to communist rule from 1946 to 1992, although this museum details the history of the police as far back as 1912. The paranoia of the ruling regime at the time is clear to understand with many exhibits and written information in all of the rooms. The final passageway leading to the decontamination chambers Despite being built as a nuclear bunker, we certainly got the feeling that this was also used for apprehension and interrogation. The political persecution of Albanian citizens is truly harrowing and overwhelmingly hard to understand. It is estimated that over 100,000 people were apprehended by the communist regime, with some 6,000 being executed, 34,000 imprisoned, and 50,000 sent to internment camps. One can only imagine how it must have felt for those taken to bunkers just like these, walking the long, cold hallways underground with an uncompromising feeling of fear and despair. Thankfully, this is now in the past; the museum is now just a stark reminder of how not to govern a country. There are two bunker museums in Albania, Bunk'Art 1 & Bunk'Art 2. They are just 2 of an astonishing network of tunnels and bunkers built across the country by its paranoid dictator leader at the time, Enver Hoxha. More on Hoxha and Bunk'Art 1 later in this post! "While BUNK'ART 1 is dedicated to the history of the Albanian communist army and to the daily lives of Albanians during the regime, BUNK'ART 2 reconstructs the history of the Albanian Ministry of Internal Affairs from 1912 to 1991 and reveals the secrets of “Sigurimi”, the political police that was the harsh persecution weapon used by the regime of Enver Hoxha" Keep reading to find out more about the bunkers of Albania, how to get tickets for Bunk'Art 2, and directions on how to get there. ⪢ Safeguard Your Trip with SafetyWing For peace of mind abroad, we recommend travel insurance. Enver Hoxha and Albania's Bunkers To understand the bunkers, you first need to know about Enver Hoxha, the country's first communist chief of state. He ruled the country for 40 years from 1944 until he died in 1985. Shortly after World War II, Hoxha's reform program revolutionized Albania's economy and living standards and he is widely credited for taking Albania to a self-sufficient footing. This came after years of Ottoman rule and a brief Italian invasion before the WW2. His party was widely popular in Albania in its earlier years, given the huge changes he implemented. Disease epidemics and illiteracy were stamped out, and electricity was brought to every district in the country. Albania also became almost completely dependent on its food crops and industry, both of which were previously nonexistent. Despite these successes, other issues began to arise geopolitically, which were perhaps the trigger for Hoxha's brutal crackdowns that he initiated amongst the Albanian people, and those that are detailed as such in the bunker museums. Hoxha formed various alliances throughout the earlier days of his tenure, with the likes of Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union, and China . All of whom he severed ties with over time, with a growing paranoia that the influence of the outside world would threaten his power and rule over Albania. He gradually spurned all of the world's major powers, insisting that Albania would become a model socialist republic. It was these factors that led to the persecution of his people as he increasingly started to look inwards for threats to his governance. Political persecutions and executions were rife, as was the brutality of the police and government officials. The fear led to the creation of an enormous network of walls of barbed wire, tunnels, and bunkers across the country, all designed to 'protect' the government from invaders and nuclear attacks. These attacks never actually came to pass, ultimately leading to this very network being used to interrogate and imprison Albanian people. The toppling of Enver Hoxha's statue in Skanderbeg Square, central Tirana. Source: balkaninsight.com Communism in Albania collapsed in 1989 in the Albanian revolution , with Enver Hoxha's statue in Skanderbeg Square torn down. There was a subsequent fervent rejection of anything associated with him and his government. The Republic of Albania was proclaimed on April 29th, 1991. Bunk'Art 1 & the Dajti Express Cable Car Bunk'Art 1 is a much larger bunker built on the outskirts of Tirana, again commissioned by Enver Hoxha. It was designed for the political elite only and was a very well-kept secret throughout its construction. This bunker is located next to an active military base, and despite never being used, it is presented as it was on completion, ready for a nuclear attack. Bunk'Art 1 - image source tripadvisor.com This bunker is more decorative than Bunk'Art 2, with lots of artwork and a large assembly hall. The government would have been able to run the country from here, and it has an office exclusively for Hoxha himself. Unfortunately, we did not visit here ourselves on this particular trip, but do let us know if you do and if you would recommend it! Our Experience Rating: Bunk Art 2 Museum Bunk'Art 2 was one of the highlights of our research before coming to Tirana, so we were quite keen to visit. As a museum, it does not disappoint; it is well presented and informative, with a particular highlight being English translation, which is extremely helpful. The price is decent, and there are good combo options for the cable car and Bunk'Art 1, too. We are rating this museum four stars; the main reason for it not being a full house for us is the harrowing nature of what it represents. We can understand the animosity towards it from the locals, although the tourism benefits perhaps outweigh the heaviness that comes with the territory. We would recommend a visit, but would caution some discretion for those who have a more sensitive disposition or are travelling with young children. Let us know how you get on if you decide to go! He rose to prominence as a military leader who defied the powerful Ottoman Empire and became a symbol of Albanian resistance. ⪢ Early Life & Ottoman Service Born into a noble Albanian family, Skanderbeg's early life was intertwined with the political realities of the region. The Ottomans were expanding their influence, and his father, Gjon Kastrioti, sent some of his sons, including Skanderbeg, as hostages to the Ottoman court. This was a common practice intended to secure loyalty. Skanderbeg received an Ottoman education, converted to Islam (though some sources suggest he secretly remained Christian), and rose through the ranks of the Ottoman military. He even received the name Skanderbeg, a combination of "Alexander" (referencing Alexander the Great) and "Bey" (a title of nobility). The focal point of the square, the Skanderbeg Monument ⪢ Rebellion & Leadership In 1443, a pivotal moment arrived. During a battle in Serbia, Skanderbeg saw an opportunity and defected from the Ottoman army. He renounced Islam, reclaimed his family's Christian faith, and rallied other Albanian nobles to his cause. In 1444, he formed the League of Lezhë, uniting Albanian principalities against Ottoman rule. Skanderbeg's military genius became legendary. He employed guerrilla warfare tactics, utilizing Albania's mountainous terrain to his advantage. His small, agile force inflicted numerous defeats on much larger Ottoman armies. Famous victories like the Siege of Krujë in 1450 solidified his reputation as a formidable opponent. ⪢ Legacy & Symbolism Skanderbeg's resistance against the Ottomans lasted for over two decades. While he never fully expelled them from Albania, he significantly hampered their expansion and inspired generations of Albanians. He became a symbol of national identity and pride, a role he continues to hold today. The Ottomans and Albania: A Story of Conquest, Resistance, and Coexistence The Ottoman Empire and Albania shared a long and intricate history. Their relationship went through phases of conquest, fierce resistance, and even periods of co-existence. ⪢ Ottoman Arrival & a Divided Albania (14th-15th Centuries) The Ottomans first arrived in Albania in the late 14th century. They capitalized on existing rivalries among Albanian nobility, who were divided in their response. Some Albanian rulers became vassals of the Ottomans, while others fiercely resisted their encroachment. By the 1420s, the Ottomans had established a strong foothold in southern Albania and gradually expanded control northward. ⪢ Skanderbeg's Uprising & a Thorn in the Ottoman Side (1443-1468) Skanderbeg's rebellion in 1443 marked a turning point. He switched sides, defecting from the Ottomans and uniting Albanian principalities under the League of Lezhë. Skanderbeg's military genius and effective guerrilla tactics frustrated Ottoman ambitions for over two decades. He repeatedly defeated larger Ottoman armies, preventing them from fully consolidating power in Albania. Skanderbeg's legacy as a national hero and symbol of resistance continues to inspire Albanians to this day. ⪢ Ottoman Rule & a Lasting Impact (15th-Early 20th Centuries) The Ottomans eventually subdued Albania after Skanderbeg's death. Ottoman rule significantly impacted Albania. Islam spread, but many Albanians clung to their Christian faith. The Ottomans implemented the Timar system, a land-grant system tied to military service, which affected Albanian social structures. Interestingly, local Albanian elites often held positions within the Ottoman administration, demonstrating a degree of co-existence within the empire. ⪢ The Rise of Albanian Nationalism & a Breakaway (19th-Early 20th Centuries) Despite Ottoman control, Albanian cultural identity and a sense of national consciousness persisted. The 19th century witnessed the rise of Albanian nationalism, fueled by factors like religious discrimination and a yearning for self-determination. Revolts against Ottoman rule became more frequent, culminating in Albania's declaration of independence in 1912. ⪢ Dedë Gjon Luli Dedvukaj Dedë Gjon Luli Dedvukaj, also known as Ded Gjo Luli or Deda, was a prominent Albanian figure (1840-1915), particularly recognized for leading the 1911 uprising against Ottoman forces in the region of Malësia e Madhe (Greater Malësia). He is also immortalized at Skanderbeg Square, almost at the entrance to the plaza. Skanderbeg Square: A Stage for Albania's Evolving Identity Skanderbeg Square, known as Sheshi Skënderbej in Albanian, is the beating heart of Tirana, Albania's capital city. It's not just a central plaza; it's a physical manifestation of the country's complex history, reflecting different eras and architectural styles. Here's a look at its fascinating past: ⪢ Early Beginnings (19th-Early 20th Centuries) The square's history isn't as old as Tirana itself. In the 19th century, the area was largely undeveloped, with an Austrian-built public square emerging around 1917. Following Tirana's declaration as Albania's capital in 1920, city planning initiatives aimed to transform the space. ⪢ Italian Fascist Influence (1920s-1930s) During the reign of King Zog I of Albania (1928-1939), the square was envisioned as a roundabout with a central fountain. However, with the Italian invasion of Albania in 1939, the plans changed dramatically. Italian architects, influenced by the Neo-Renaissance style, designed a more elaborate layout with a circular shape and symmetrical buildings. This reflected the fascist ideals of order and grandeur. ⪢ Skanderbeg Takes Center Stage (1939-Present) The square received its name, Skanderbeg Square, in 1937, honoring Albania's national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg. Interestingly, even the communist regime, not known for its admiration of nobility, retained the name. This highlights Skanderbeg's enduring significance as a symbol of Albanian resistance and national identity. ⪢ Post-War Transformations (Mid-20th Century to Present) Following World War II and the communist takeover, the square underwent further changes. The Old Bazaar, a historic marketplace, was demolished to make way for the Palace of Culture, a Soviet-style building housing the National Theater of Opera and Ballet and the National Library. This reflected the ideological shift towards communist ideals. In recent years, Skanderbeg Square has seen a renewed focus on pedestrian access. Car traffic has been restricted, and the central area has been transformed into a more open space for gatherings and events. In the summer months, water features add a refreshing touch. ⪢ Skanderbeg Square Today Today, Skanderbeg Square stands as a testament to Albania's evolving identity. It's a place where remnants of fascist-era architecture coexist with communist-era buildings, all overlooking a monument to a national hero who defied foreign domination. The square serves as a vibrant hub, a stage for celebrations, protests, and everyday life, reflecting the dynamic spirit of modern Albania. Things to Do at Skanderbeg Square ⪢ Admire the Skanderbeg Statue At the centre of the square stands the bronze statue of Gjergj Kastrioti (Skanderbeg), Albania’s national hero. It’s the perfect photo stop and a symbol of pride and independence. ⪢ Enjoy the Architecture & Open Space This is one of the largest pedestrian squares in the Balkans, surrounded by grand government buildings with Italian and communist-era influences. Great for wide-angle shots, people-watching, and sunsets. ⪢ Visit the National History Museum The massive mosaic above the entrance—called The Albanians—is worth seeing even if you don’t go inside. But if you do, expect artefacts from Illyrian times through to the 20th century. ⪢ Step Inside Et'hem Bey Mosque A peaceful and beautifully painted mosque that survived communist suppression. Its colourful frescoes and quiet interior make it a lovely stop, whether you're spiritual or simply curious. ⪢ Climb the Clock Tower (Kulla e Sahatit) Next to the mosque, this 35-meter-high Ottoman clock tower offers 360-degree views over Skanderbeg Square and the surrounding rooftops. It’s a short but memorable climb. ⪢ Catch a performance at the Opera House Check the schedule for live performances, exhibitions, or music events at the Palace of Culture, which also houses the Opera and Ballet Theatre. Our Experience Rating: Skanderbeg Square Skanderbeg Square is certainly a place we would recommend you visit in Tirana, if you are looking to learn and understanf more of the history and culture here. The main square is absolutely huge, and initially aside from the statue there does not seem to be a great deal going on. Skanderbeg Square will not blow your socks off, but if you take the time to look outside of the main sea of floor tiles in its centre, there is actually quite a lot to see. Park walks, the museums, a carousel, and plenty of cool architecture are all on offer. Not to mention Bunk'Art 2 nearby. We do think that perhaps the city could do a better job of giving information to tourists, especially around the Skanderbeg Monument. The National History Museum has also been closed for an age, and that was also a little bit of a disappointment for us. All that being said, this square is not so much about sightseeing anyway. It is about a national hero who will forever live on in Albanian hearts, and one that we will not forget after visiting here either!
